10' long between the knots would be great. 9' would be plenty. 8' 7" would be adequate...that's the length recommended by Ed Speer's book (user height plus 2'). This is the length of the finished hammock, between the knots or whipping.

If you're going to knot the ends, start with a piece of material about 18" longer than your desired length. If you're whipping, you can add 6-8" to the length.

Welcome to the forum.

A good starting point for your height +2' + 2' (if you knot the ends). One thing you might want to try is make one on the long side. Then hang it and see how it feels. You can always go back and take some off and retry it.

Just make sure that you hem all of the edges of the nylon before you get in it. I have used cotton without hemming, but nylon will rip.

When I first started making a hammock I went to walmart and bought a bunch of $1 yd cotton. This way I was not out anything if I got it wrong. I was fine without hemming the cotton. Just get some that looks strong.

Post some pics after you get it done.

I'm 6'2" and have found starting with a raw material length of 10'6" makes for a very comfortable hammock. May even be able to go another 6" shorter. So for you, I'd say raw material length anywhere between 10'6" and 11'.

Lengths assume you're using the construction methods outlined in my DIY's below.

Ona!? Thats my old stompin grounds! Cabell to putnam :-) . My folks still.live out Rt.10...anyways welcome.

Im 6'8" 220 and use a Blackbird but mind you ut has a foot box. I have a couple Diy's too. 126x64 and 132x60 both work great for us guys. It calls for a lil longer tarp IMO but well worth it.

My brother recently used mine which is about 11' and roughly 58" wide and my brother who is 6'8" thought it could've been a bit wider, but the length I think was fine.
