Please note: what I am about to describe is not currently on the Dutchware site. I don't have an official name from Dutch for these items, but I did get permission first from Dutch before posting this product review. He saw my need from another post and sent me a solution without me even asking. That's how great a guy he is!

Dutch sent me a set of plastic hooks that work perfectly for my SuperFly Doors. They are easy to use one handed, stay in place in windy conditions, and are small and I don't worry about them snagging lines when putting the tarp away. I have tested them at home under very rainy and windy conditions with no problems. I took them into the field and let a total novice use them without much instruction with no problems. These hooks for my doors are great.

My best picture of these is this one:

Here are my fuzzy pictures of them in action.

They work great in keeping my doors hooked open or closed, and thought I'd share this quick review.

Thanks Dutch!!

Those not only look cool (as all Dutch products do) but they also look to be really functional (also like all Dutch products).

Ooh, I'm curious. Saying that because I recently put some of Dutch's plastic quilt hooks onto zing-it continuous loops, which I then prusik'd onto my panel pullout guy lines. They let me attach the long red guy lines around trees (wrap around and hook back onto line, or around an object and hook to opposite prusik), and I can also hook them onto the corner guy-lines for porch mode.

I said I'm curious b/c afterwards I thought that perhaps small (size #0) s-biner or even mitten hooks might be nice since they would prevent tangle issues, but you mentioned that you don't need to worry about snagging your lines so what are the design differences? Have a close-up pic?

Here's my setup for reference:

Side panel pullout lines in action (each red line is looped & hooked around a large downed branch out of frame):

After tying a whole bunch of taut-line hitches last weekend on my Superfly this may be just the type of thing I was looking for.

I tried the quilt hooks (there is another post somewhere with me using the ridge line hooks too). They work great, but they are a little harder to get off the line for use on doors, especially the entry door. I usually had to use two hands. The hooks that I am using for the doors that Dutch sent me have a small half ridge in the loop that holds the line in place, but doesn't take as much effort when I want to take them off. What's cool is they stay on well because of the leverage on the "handle" of the hook. Here is a sideways picture of them.... they are the one's that look like little bottle openers.

http://photos.motoscholar.com/photos/i-btGmJH4/1/M/i-btGmJH4-M.jpg

Here is a fuzzy picture in use. The line seems to be obscuring the hook somewhat. Maybe I'll get to take some better pictures with a real camera later this weekend.

I like the idea of using the quilt hook for the tie out. I'll probably use that idea on my tie outs for the WBBB shelf and other side.

I've been thinking about these ever since I saw the thread. I'm planning to use 4 of them to replace the oblong 3 holed style tensioners on my Shamu UQ. If that works I will probably buy a dozen more for other UQ's.

Dutch when will these be available & what is the name you are selling them under?

You two can Pm me your addresses and I will send you a set for free. Honestly they were intended for another purpose. Snore machine used them for this purpose. Maybe I can get some feedback. I was thinking it should be more of a hook, but I rarely use doors so I'm just going by the OP's pictures.

Wow! Thanks Dutch! Id be honored to try out some new Dutchware. Ive been using mitten hooks but they are tiresome..........and well arent made by Dutch. I use my doors on occassion but like to secure them on the inside wall mostly. These would make easy work of late night storms.

I've been using the nylon #0 s-biners on tarp rigging for a while now and they work pretty well but I'd be interested in trying Dutch's plastic hooks, they might be more convenient for some applications especially for cold weather.

I'd like to redesign these to be better for this purpose. I was thinking of having them shaped with the hook turned up like a J. They look like they could pop out with the current version.

Between that little lip and how it leverages the lines, it stays put pretty well on my door lines. I wonder if the flatness of the sides are also contributing to the staying magic. Dunno. It just works. :)

The J would be interesting, especially if they could also hook to the plastic triangles/D-rings that are on the WBBB and Switchback and other hammocks/tarp manufacturers. I don't need it, but this would be a good selling point to a more general audience. And of course, Dutch, I'll be happy to try it! :D

I think you're on to something w/ the J hook. I'm finding the plastic & alum quilt hook to be very adaptable in large part because of the hook, and I'm much more apt to use them than mitten hooks or even s-biners for most things since I hate dealing with those in the cold.

Maybe a Dutch & Tato designed mitten hook sans gate could be in the future? And come in different cordage sizes? If the Dutch hook didn't carry the titanium price premium and came in larger sizes I'd definitely buy a lot.

On the subject of hooks, I saw these Q-Loks in the HF store:

http://hammockforumsstore.webs.com/apps/webstore/products/show/3130592

http://thumbs.freewebs.com/Members/viewThumb.jsp?fileID=283181159&size=large

Says ideal w/ 3-4mm cords, but struck me that having a hook that could work with anything from 1.75mm zing-it up to 1/8" amsteel would be spiffy. By that I mean it can fit onto the cord, and more importantly (to me) it would prevent the hook from sliding down the cord when at an incline without the need for stopper knots.

I've been experimenting w/ hanging my tarp higher using two tarp lines and one of the biggest downsides vs single horizontal CRL is that in order to hang gear I need to attach all of my hooks & biners to prusiks on the RLs to prevent them from sliding towards the tarp. Same reason I tend to not hang things from my suspension (that, and buried amsteel doesn't lend itself to hooks I have). I haven't posted my thoughts on the utility hook yet, but it suffers from slippage in my limited usage thus far.

Upside down "V" shape may work, or perhaps there's a limit to the range of cord diameters a hook could maintain friction on. I thought I had a spray can of black rubberized coating around (can't seem to find it), but I was going to try and spray some of my hooks to see if that helped any. Also having visions of a slick D-shaped spring-loaded design that puts tension on the cord once in the hook, but that's probably a drastic over-complication not to mention the cost..

Anyway, pardon the brainstorm. At the end of the day perhaps using prusiks is the best solution. I'll happily use the quilt hooks where I can for now - just ordered a small handful for DIY projects I have planned over the next month, certainly functional if not always elegant.

So Dutch, Whatever happened to these clips? I went to site to buy with no luck:(. I'm using a mitten hook on a shock cord loop hitched to my doors d-ring now. I would like something a bit stronger though. Do you have 4 of those hooks left for sale or are you making something better in you lab? Dutch Door Hooks?

Looking forward to some more Dutch magic. I have been using quilt clips for doors and guy lines for the 2 center tarp pullouts. Makes it easy to unhook and leave in the bag if I am in porch mode.

Hey Dutch,

1st, great gear you offer.

2nd, I've been looking for hooks for my doors. I was going to go with Dutch Hooks after trying Dutch Quilt hooks. (Didn't work for me) The Dutch hooks would work great on my 1.75mm Zing It. However, they're small and not the easiest to get them to release. (Cold weather, gloves even harder)

I have a bum leg, so I have a hard time raising it even a few feet to step over the line to enter/exit. I could go with a small biner, however everything on my Suspension system & my tarp setup, screams Dutchware.

So, my question, (Sorry for the delay getting here) is when do you think (Ball Park Guess) when you might have something ready for testing/selling?

I am interested, one hand sounds like what I need, very easy, less stuff dangling, that is what I need. Between the three adults and one tween in my household, we would purchase a few.

We really need to start a 12 Step Group for those of us who keep buying hammocks, I just keep adding hammocks, then I need a new tarp, then more little goodies to make attatching everything easier. I really need a 12 Step Group, my life is unmangagable. LOL

1st Step, We admitted we were powerless over our addiction - that our lives had become unmanageable, that living without Dutchware is just not living.

Came to believe that a Power greater than Dutch could restore us to sanity.

Ya, I was doing the same, when I saw the original thread. If you see the video review I made, you can see how easy these are to use.

I also have a Poncho that I use for an Over-Cover in cold weather. It takes 10 mins or longer to set it up. With these, I can do it in just a few mins. It really is a fiddle free piece of gear.

As soon as Dutch starts to sell them, I'll put together some pictures and a video on how I'm going to use them with my Poncho. He only send me 5 and I have them permanently on my tarp doors spliced on with Brummel Locks.
