View Full Version : Nest needs help on the trail
Just got off the phone with Nest. Seems he had a little unwanted excitement today. He was hiking outside of Cannonsville NY when he heard gun shots. The trail dept winding closer to the shots, and then they stopped. He kept walking and all of the sudden he had a bullet whiz over his head. He has a new "part" in his curly hair.
He jumped behind a rock wall, not knowing if he was shot at intentionally or not. After circling around, the realized that a couple of not so bright people were taking target practice at a peice of plywood that the bullets were going straight through. He got into town and called the police (took several tries because he had crossed state line). He just wanted to make sure they were stopped before more hikers came through.
He's also glad he's 5'11" and not 6'!
So, here's the help he wants. Anyone have enough Dynema or Anema rope to make him a bullet proof hammock?? At least he has a sense of humor about it!
He said maybe Headchange4U has some of that kevlar he uses to make stuff sacks.
Needless to say - he's staying in town tonight!

Once again I see that we don't have the market completely cornered on imbecilic red necks, just mostly cornered.

It would have been fun to have smeared a pack of ketchup in a well placed spot, say around the abdomen, and then staggered out on the idiots, clutching your "gunshot wound", said something like, " You've ....shot.....me...I .....have ......5 ....kids...UGHGHG!", and then collapse in a heap.
They would either run away and live the rest of their life thinking they killed a family man because of stupidly playing around with a gun OR they would rush over in a panic, at which point he could have jumped to his feet, hopefully scaring them so badly they need to invest in some new underwear, and say, "Let's discuss gun safety..."
But that's just me.:p

That would be funny, but I'd be afraid the guys would more likely fire a few more shots to make sure I'd really be good and dead...
He kind of felt the same way, not knowing what their intentions were to begin with.
I couldn't help but laugh when he asked me to get on HF and see if anyone would make him a kevlar hammock!

I'm glad he's OK
Sounds like a story to me. I can honestly say I was never shot at on the trail. I saw more hunters and heard more gun shots that I have ever seen, but none of them were shooting at me.
I have to laugh when people say not to worry they know the trail is there or you'll be ok. Those people have never been in the backwoods of VA, TN, or NC during deer rifle season.

or during 'crop harvest'.

Talked to Nest again today. He heard more shots before he finally got out of New Jersey. Don't think he ever wants to go there again. Take a look at his Trail Journal entry for the details of his experience.
He did leave a note in the shelter for the Trail Runners since it didn't seem like the police were too concerned.
On to New York now.

Too many people don't know (or follow) the 2nd part of the gun safety motto:
Know your target AND BEYOND.
As for knowing where a trail is: when off trail in the woods, you often don't know a trial is before you until you're standing in it. I'm an archer not a hiker, but I'd NEVER assume the other guy is ethical, safe or knowledgeable. Wearing an orange hat during any firearms season is a must.

It's easy to "not know where the trail is". Just ask anyone who has spent much time hiking & chances are there has been a time they left the trail to use the bath room & suddenly realized that the trail curved back around to were they were using the bathroom:eek:

Funniest one I ran into was when we camped just past a trail junction. I hiked up hill, away from the water source a good ways to find a suitable spot with my umbrella, trowel, and tp only to find that was where the other trail was and there was no going uphill past it. Yeah, it was raining.

Yeah, & some of those "hills" aren't much fun to climb up, especially when you discover that's not were you needed to be:rolleyes:

I'm thinking he probably owns firearms, and would have them with him if he was interested in doing so.

A jury of 12 would not be your friends in that case. Especially since the idiots were target practicing.

Awesome.
Man... I can't wait to hear about this when he gets off the trail. Make no mistake though, Nest likes to get shot at, the kid's an adrenhaline junky and from what I can tell, nothing gets the old glands going for him more than an "action sequence."
Bet you hate you missed that one, huh? What color blazing would that be TrainWreck??
That's great - brown blazing it is!:D

Brass Blazing. And I miss nest, I hope we get to meet up immediately post trail.
Oh wait, you guys already named it brown blazing. Yeah that's appropriate I'd to have had to pitched whatever bottom covers I was wearing if a bullet went that close to my head.

Just be glad you wern't hiking next to Nest, being taller than him it would have split his hair & your melon
Brown Blazing? :D
Hah! I crerated it, so I name it. It is now copper blazing. Train Wreck is right though, a sick side of me did kind of enjoy it. Definately increased the pucker factoer a little bit.

Why copper, out of curiosity?

Bullet material maybe.

I guess. For plain target plinking, I bet they weren't using copper. It's a semantic question, though, so it doesn't matter.

Yep, cause of the copper bullets. It was a 9mm, so even target rounds would be copper jackets over lead.

Not necessarily. Solid lead bullets are preferred by reloaders (they're cheaper) and swaged lead bullets are considered by many to be the most accurate pistol bullet available. I used pure lead for all my practice and competition rounds.
You should probably use commercial rounds for self-defense, but that's another story.

Absolutely. Off-topic for sure, but I agree with you. It would be a civil lawyer's dream to handle a wrongful death suit where the shooter was a handloader.

If they are dumb enough to not know a trail is 50 feet from their house, I doubt they are smart enough to do more than buy a box of 50 from the store and fire away.

If you're saying that we reloaders are pretty smart folks: thanks! Who am I to argue?
