DD bugnet mod

I just replaced the support webbing on my DD bugnet. Although I thought the webbing loops were ok despite being "seconds", after a while they pulled out because they didn't heat seal the ends. I used 3/4" camo grossgrain that I had laying around. I first removed the entire piece of webbing from zipper to the other side. I had to rip out the zipper a little but it was no big deal to sew it back up. Then I made a 20" peice of grossgrain with loops every 4".

The I simply sewed them on where the taylor's chalk still marked the old webbing location. I also replaced the suspension with camo webbing and tri-glides. Also replace the 3/16" bungee for the netting with 1/16" shockcord although I will need a ridgeline in the future.

I really like the design of the DD and it will be an easy clone with lighter materials someday. I still have to work on a way to keep the 2 layers closed and I may add tie outs, but it doesn't seem to need it.

Go buy two cheapo aluminum or carbon arrows from the local discount sporting goods store or wally world, cut them to length, put nocks on both ends and you have an excellent bug net spreader/support.:cool:

I ordered my DD travel hammock a while ago and had the same problem with the loops. The ends were not melted, and came out. (And I didn't order an "seconds".) I noticed it after unpacking, and didn't want to go through trouble of sending it back, as I planned to use it that weekend.
It took me less than half an hour to carefully take out the loops, melt the ends and sew them back in same position as before.
I used some sticks as spreaders, but later, I transformed some old tentpoles to spreaders. As they can be folded, they fit perfectly in the bag with the hammock.

Goog idea of you, to replace the shockcord for thinner cord. This is unnessecary thick, and therefore heavy and bulky. I will do the same, thanks for the idea Dutch.

I like the camo. I was going to go out and buy some black webbing, but after seeing yours I think I'll use the OWF camo webbing to make the loops.

HC4U it is webbing on the hammock support, but the netting loops are 3/4" camo grossgrain to save weight. I got it at Walmart. I also didn't replace it all the way to the zipper so I have to me careful not to pull it too tight or I could rip the bugnet. If I were to do it again I would go from the one side to the zipper just like the original webbing did. I think it is ok because the netting is very strong but it wouldn't weight much for grossgrain to go from side to side.

For the spreader on my DD, I took a 3' length of 5/16" dowel (59 cents at corner hardware store), cut it in half, got out my knife for whittling, applied some Tung oil, and came out with this (not the best pic, I'll take a pic of it on the hammock when it stops raining):
