We are planning a trek up there next summer, my concern about hanging in Bear territory is how fast can you react and move from a hammock versus being on the ground or are you able to get high enough to be safe from the bears? newbie question again:o

Bears climb a lot better and faster than you or I do.

Just get you some of that mega power pepper spray that they spray on polar bears and you should be good to go.:p

I'll bet I can get out of my hammock a LOT faster than most people can get out of a tent!
Plus, you have a much better visual of what's going on around you in a hammock w/ a tarp, especially if the weather allows for hanging the tarp high & wide. That's the way I like to hang my tarp if I can.
Well, I am new to hammock camping, but have spent many nights camping in bear country, mostly upper Quebec while bowhunting and canoeing...has been a few years but I am sure the rules still apply...Hang your food about 50 to 100 yds away from camp...clean your pots and dishes away from your campsite...check all around your campsite before you set up..bears will leave a kill and come back later...Stay away from areas that are berry patches etc, don't want to sleep in there kitchen so to speak...carry pepper spray, and a small air horn...use the air horn first, and pepper spray if the bear becomes agressive...bear are just as spooky as deer in the wild...use common sense and read some material about bear encounters before you go...don't set up on or too near a game trail...Over,400 nights,(estimated) camping in bear country and followed these rules and never had a bear in my campsite.. I hope this helps....Rob
Rob, If I ever go hiking in Grizzly country again I may pay your way to the trip. You are The Man! Mule
