View Full Version : Pine Mountain Trail - Kentucky
Anyone hiked the completed sections of Kentucky's Pine Mountain Trail? I'm not finding much information about it online and I'm curious as to how well a hammock would do.
Also, has anyone seen the PMT guidebook? According to one site the Pine Mountain Trail Conference publishes it but the PMTC website doesn't mention it.

I have friends who hike the PMT every Thanksgiving for about 3-4 days. I have joined them a couple of times. It's a really beautiful trail but some spots can be rough. Definitely recommended.
OutrageGIS (http://www.outragegis.com/) sell some maps for the PMT. Their maps are the best. I have the maps for the Big South Fork and the Red River Gorge. Best trail maps I have ever used.

Here's the OutrageGIS info on the PMT (http://www.outragegis.com/store/product.php?productid=20000&cat=1&page=1). Looks like everything in downloadable. That's different from their other maps.

It is great to see all these KY hangers all in one spot. I have always wanted to do the PMT. If you go, please give a full report, I would curious to hear all about your trip and how it goes with the Hammocks.

HC4U, that's a great link. Thanks a bunch. Digital maps should be fine, I think; I can get weatherproof paper to print them.
When you say some spots can be rough do you mean dificult climbs and such or poor trail conditions?
Bison_2, I'd love to make it out to the PMT. I doubt I'll even attempt it until early spring, though. I don't yet have a good winter hammock setup and need to save some cash for an underquilt. I'll definitely write it up when I go.

The trail is in generally pretty good shape. By rough I mean climbs. Nothing compared to some spots on the AT but pretty good roller coaster sections for Kentucky.

Pine Mountain represents one of the last great contiguous stretches of unfragmented forest in Kentucky. While other parts of the region have been developed, strip-mined or heavily logged, Pine Mountain remains relatively untouched. Positioned at the western edge of the Appalachian Mountains, the mountain offers commanding views of Virginia, Kentucky, West Virginia and Tennessee.

I'm gonna have to come "hang" with you guys next time I'm out that way visiting my parents. They live just 15 minutes west of Ft. Knox

I've hiked the whole thing. PMTC has been doing alot of great work on upkeep of the trail in recent years. Start from Pound Gap in VA and the hike isnt nearly as brutal. Plenty of trees for hanging but the climbs can be murderous at times atleast for me. Take a week and do it, thats what I did.
