Hey guys lets start planning for our annual winter hang. I was thinking the first weekend in January. The 4-6 to be exact. Unless anyone has a better spot I have two possibles depending on how many people attend. They are both in Chesterfield Ma. Let me know what you guys think. Does the dates work for the majority??? This would be car camping location so a good and safe place to try your gear and have backup if needed.

I'll try to fly home on the 3rd from spending Christmas and New Years with my girlfriend. I'd much rather any other weekend but I can make it work.

The dates might work for me. I will have to check with SWMBO as we go to Saranac Lake every year for New Years. The location is great for me. Thanks for starting the planning thread. Along with dates and location, I vote for planning a group meal for one of the nights.

Heck yeah! Site is an easy two hours drive; ditto on the group meal idea.

Lobster?, hmmm I have a stock pot that holds 11 gallons of water.

Even if we don't, one of the two proposed sites is on a river, I will cut a hole in the ice for water if I have to. I have done it before. :D Last years winter hike to Stratton Pond was just one time.

I know it's premature and still a ways off but I thought I would at least put together a list at this point for those who have shown interest.
So far I have

Daveocelott

As we get closer I will refine the list and we can formalize the meals and location. With this many people it knocks out one location already but I have another that will work easily. Again both are drive in car camping with bathroom facilities and water to be sourced either from a lake or what we bring in. I have 3-4 7.25 gal jugs from scouts that we can use so water will not be an issue.

mbnow
10-12-2012, 15:10

I couldn't think of a nicer group to freeze to death with!!

Where is the second possible site?

I hope you guys haven't forgot there's a whole National Forest just up and to the right of you ...... just a few hundred thousand acres.

The last time I camped there we got 9 inches of snow. We were the only two camping and had the park ranger check on us a couple times through out the night. The last time he checked in we offered him coffee and a seat by the fire. He wasn't so afraid of us freezing to death after that.

Sun shower this WILL be a Car camping event. I want it to be able for people who want to SAFELY test their gear with back up readily available.

raiffnuke

A recurring theme at the last hang was that (for this level/type of camping) volume was as much a consideration as weight. Problem solved?

raiffnuke
10-13-2012, 17:20
Yes, as this will be a car camping trip, volume is not really an issue. And, I got my new custom ULA Catalyst, so I will be eager to try out the new pack. :D

Roger that, sir; was more referring to the type of camping we were doing at time (single 2ish mile hike-in scenario), but since we are talking car camping for this hang, thinking I might throw my 8x10 Taj Mah-tent in the truck in case we need an inclement weather mess hall.

Custom Catalyst sounds trick; cannot wait to check it out.

That would be great. I will bring some extra blue poly tarps for extra coverage if we need it. We had a pretty nice setup that Nighthauk rigged for us last time.

We can rig something similar, and if our initial list proves fairly accurate, we will need it. Many more people participating in NEHHA events! :woot:

Nighthauk
10-14-2012, 08:44
I was going to pick one of two locations depending on how many people come. If we have a few then we would use the same site as last year. If we have more I can reserve a site at my Boy scout camp just a mile down the road from the last one. Of which Pete and I are checking out the site on the 28th of October.

So it sounds like we have a lot of people interested in the NEHHA winter hang. Raiffnuke and I on the 28th will be taking a look at the site that we are planning on using. Like I mentioned earlier this is the local Chesterfield scout camp. So because of that and not wanting to lose that weekend to other groups camping there, I went ahead and booked it for the weekend of the 4-6th of January. The cost of rental For us I think is $20.00 of which I will cover. However with that said if we do go ahead and use the site and you feel inclined, a donation is always welcomed from friends of scouting. It is not mandatory nor required but a great cause that serves our youth. Raiff and I will post up a review and pictures of the location come the 28th to get everyone's opinion.

Just completed an order for an UGQ winter quilt set. An extra length 0* underquilt and a long/wide 20* tq with 2 extra ounces; both made with M50 material and resistant down. Along with my down jammies, I should be better equipped for our lovely New England winters.

Should have in a few weeks and will be looking for places to hang and just sleeping on the back porch through more of the winter. Currently, I'm good to around 32*.

All I will need between now and then are the under and over quilt I think.

Hah, don't feel bad. I bought a hammock, set up with all the cool widgets already, and did not use it for about a year. Must have used the tent 20+ times in that period. Finally used it, and wow, is it amazing. Try it in your yard, don't be ashamed. Now eat your spinach and hang that thing. :D and you will have one of those.

Welcome; hope you can make it to the hang.

You might want to add a tarp to your list. Since this is a car camping scenario, it should be easier for us to bring some extra gear to round out the mix. I have an old Moss Vistawing that I have not tried out for hammock use but plan to bring for extra shelter; yours to use if you need something to keep the (hope to have) snow off.

Near Chesterfield, MA. Nighthauk and I have plans to check out the one of the two sites we have chosen. We have already had a winter hang at the first site, but we want to choose the better of the two for the number of people who plan on attending. Once we get it checked out, we will post pics and our recommendation/selection. Stay tuned, same Hammock Time, same Hammock Channel....:shades:

Goat should not be discounted. It is very good actually; except Billy goat meat that would be an acquired taste. There are many fantastic Greek recipes that you can whip up in the wild easily. Not as gamy tasting as lamb, which is not really that gamy IMHO.

But if it is goat or lobster, pass me the bugs.

Just found this thread! :)
Sounds great!
I am a total newbie also. Have been collecting bits and pieces for the "ultimate" hang. So far I have en ENO DN, and material to make a tarp. Amsteel for suspension, carabiners, rings, straps etc. Still have not hung yet. Too busy collecting pieces and changing my mind about suspensions etc. Probably won't need to decide about how to make a bug net for this hang though :)
Have some tablecloths to make my own hammock since reading here that longer hammocks are more comfortable. Gosh that DN is short!
I am looking forward to meeting everyone. I have a down sleeping bag for a top quilt, and will get another sleeping bag for UQ, or maybe use the down for the UQ. So many ways to do things.
Have been working on a single post hang, but since the ground will probably be frozen, stakes will be a problem, so I just may build one of those turtledog stands. Car camping makes them realistic for me. I had been working toward touring on my Yamaha Majesty and being able to set up anywhere. Hadn't thought about winter hanging but it sounds like fun! I have gone tent camping in Maine in the snow so I am looking forward to this adventure. Sign me up, for now, and I will let you know if things change.

High around freezing and low in the low teens. I would make certain ones gear/clothing is good down to 0F. Since we are car camping, have extra blankets in the car if unsure. I know I will be bringing an extra wool blanket just in case.

I'm realy hoping to make it again this year. I missed the Fall NEHHA due to the wedding I went to.

It was fun last year and I had a great time.

I would like to have a good underquilt for this outing but I'm not sure if I will have enough down in time. My summer quilt and some reflective padding should do me just fine though.

Last year it wasn't that bad for temps if I remember correctly. it was just the rain and wind that sucked. Luckily I was taught about the prussic knot and now have that on my 4 corner tie-outs as well as my top ties on the ridge line over my tarp.

I'm going to watch this as much as I can, so count me in as of this point in time.

I am posting this thought here to get an idea of what people in this area think of this before I post it in the general hammock talk section. We could do the first one before everyone else starts copying us. LOL

NEHHA D.I.Y. #1

I have this crazy thought about DIY gear and how much I don’t know how to make. I am fairly proficient with my thread injector but its my ability to not ruin some expensive material while making what I want to make.

What I am wondering, is anyone interested in getting together once a month (or more) for a couple of hours, as a group and learning from each other about different things that we know how to make, or would love to make.

We could spend the first hour learning about how to make one piece of gear from someone that has made them in the past, for example… I can make a snake skin very easily, and I don’t need to use no-seeum bug netting. I could spend 1hr making it, talking about pros and cons, and the best way to sew it together.

Then anyone that brings their own thread injector can stick around and make it themselves or something else, or if you don’t have one, you can stay and socialize and talk about Hammocks, Gear, Camping, Thread Injectors or whatever you want.

The next meeting someone can start another project and work on it for an hour with the group. Then everyone else can work on that or start their own project, or socialize. If the project is going to take a few meetings, that is fine. It can take as long as needed; this is more of a social gathering and learning class.

We could hold the meetings at places that have lots of room and outlets to plug into.
We could all chip in to pay for the room if there is a fee and maybe get snacks as well.

Does anyone else think this might be a good idea?

HuskyHiker

Fastest way from Albany would be Rt. 20 to Pittsfield - Rt. 8 to Dalton - Rt. 9 to Williamsburg - Turn Right on 143. Its only about 4 miles (+-) from there.

From Albany Airport to Pittsfield its going to take just under 1hr. Doing this Rt listed above is going to be just about 1hr 45 minn. If you want I could possibly meet you in Pittsfield and you can follow me there. Just let me know.

Looks like a 4 1/2 hour ride from Jersey. I'm still planning on attending, now I just have to request Jan 4 off, get the doors attached to the Mamajamba and look for my warm socks. I have Perrito down as a possible passenger. Anyone else in Jersey wanting to share the ride just let me know.

Boy a lot of conversation while I was hanging in a tree, and not by a hammock. 😝 Raiff I am good with you being president if you are.
To Clarify the location of the January 4-6 2013 NEHHA group hang it will be at the Chesterfield Scout reservation in Chesterfield Ma. Location is NEAR 164 Main Road in Chesterfield. It is about 100 yards west on RT 143 of the above address.

For starters, you have to begin every post with, "My fellow Hamericans"

Other than that, help new hangers, set up group hangs, stoke the fires, make cool gear, head up porcupine control; wait, you already do all of this. Carry on . . .

I found that if you attach the doors the way shug did, you will end up tearing the tarp apart at the top seams. I ended up switching it up a little and it works much better. Now all I need to do is remember what I did. I took my doors off for the summer and need to put them back on as well.
Also if you do a ridge line over your tarp its going to make a difference as well.

Forgot about that, there may be restrictions. I can always grab Coco and Coffee. I was thinking little neck clams, but I think I'll pass on any thing coming out of the Jersey waters at the moment. Who knows what toxic puke was dredged up by that headache of a storm Sandy.

Here's my thought on the adult beverages. I don't mind them as long as it is not in excess and you pack out what you pack in. We or I rather are not representing scouts so that is not an issue. I am sure I can trust all of you to be respectful of both property and land.

I think you are right. We (the ones that have attended in the past) have always been respectful and picked up after themselves, I don't see any reason to think the same good manners will not be had again. So, those that want to indulge in some adult beverages, are welcome to do so, just bring enough to share :D.

Are you going with the ridge line over the tarp?
I am useing this style now on my BMJ as it adds a lot less stress on the tarp ends. I also added a shock cord and a prusik knot set up for adjusting it easily. I do like this style as it takes less time to adjust the tarp. It was a good tip that I learned from shug and then got to see at last years Winter NEHHA hang.

Do you mean that you will replace the hooks with shock cord or are you going to add it to the hooks?

I dont know if it will work all that great by adding to the hooks or removing them. There is already a gap created by the hooks and it might not be beneficial to add more of a gap.

I just made my two shock cords that came with it longer.

I have tons of shock cord and will start playing with my doors today. I'll see what I come up with that might work for you and post some pics of it.

How much more would the site be if we used the building?

Do you have a area picked out that we will be useing?

I dont mind sharing the area if another group wants to camp there during this time we will be there. It might be a good way to convert some groundlings. :D

===> Depends where you are starting from in Jersey. I drove down from about 10 miles north of Boston to the Jersey Winter Hang last year, and it too me about 6 hours to the Pine Barrens at the Batona Camp. With all the construction lately, I would leave a little more time. Hope to see you there!

Hello Sunshower, glad to see that there is someone close by. I will need some pointers. I have done plenty of camping, but this hanging thing intrigues me. Would like to meet sometime to see your equipment to get familiar with this stuff. Hope all went well during storm.

I use a fixed ridge line over the top of the tarp. I was thinking of using the door configuration shown on Warbonnets Website. Stretching the shock cord across the tarp to tighten the doors. The first photo is my setup on my last hike, the second is from Warbonnet's Site with the doors in place for a winter setup

I do have an area picked out. The area I am thinking about is the lean-to shelters at the end of the video. I called for the building and a small group of people going to philmont have taken it. So I think the area around the lean-to has the best area to work out of. It is also closest to the road so if we have to park some cars in an area near the gate we wouldn't have to walk far back after we drive in and unload. We would still have access to the lake and open spots for stargazing.

I live in Stow MA so just South of you folks. Last messaging about impromptu hangs was in this (http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=60809&page=3) thread, targeting 11/9. We should all strive to make this happen; plan in that thread.

Worst case, I have a small patch of trees in my back yard, two hammock stands, and a hang spot three feet from Lake Boon. Could accommodate several hangers.

I am expecting a winter quilt set in about a week so itching to get out; else, just snoozing on back porch.

====> Hi Dave! Stow is not very far at all! I think we could round-up close to ten HF'ers in a ten square mile area around Beantown. A local sub-group hang (but open to any and all) might be fun to organize - sort of as a test run for the Winter Hang.
