Well that whole Job thing is going to take preference for me. JK. I am good for most weekends I would like to nail down a date so that I can roll some vacation time into next year.

I can usually pull the first few weeks of Jan.

Feb 15-17 will not work for me it's a hallmark holiday weekend so they say... Any other weekend is good for me...

Is there a reason that you can't do that corporate holiday the previous weekend?

I'd like to go to an out of country hang, if a location can be chosen relatively close to a border crossing (Port Huron preferably).

Cheers

Good question..last years was in Ludington. Zero crowd! Besides us, there was only a few other idiots in the snow.:D

We can certainly do a more centrally/southernly located camp. Get some of our friends from other states and countries. I like the idea...sounds like another POLL.:scared:

You'd have a pretty significant drive from Oshawa even if we had the hang right on the Blue Water Bridge! That would be super cool if you could make it tho'. I've been "shopping for state parks on that side of the state this a.m. but don't know that much about the area. Hopefully some Eastsiders will chime in.

I know the gang has hung at Pinckney SP before. I think that could work?
Map (http://www.michigandnr.com/Publications/PDFS/RecreationCamping/pinckney_map.pdf)
Park details (http://www.michigandnr.com/parksandtrails/details.aspx?id=484&type=SPRK)

Close enough for Ohio, Indiana also.
Just a thought.

There are only 5 state parks open for winter camping, rifle river, ludington, petosky, TQ falls and i think portage lake in waterloo, near jackson...

It's a 3 hour drive to get to the Blue Water Bridge. It's about the same travel time for me to hit Algonquin Provincial Park, which is what I did last winter to find snow. So anything within 1.5 hours from there would be good for me. Some of the other Ontario hangers make the trip to the Spring Mahha in PA, so they're going further.

I was going to suggest we check out Waterloo. Maybe even pool and rent one of the yurts for food and such. Just an idea.

There are a number of state parks open in the winter: Algonac, Fort Custer, Ludington, North Higgins Lake, Tahquamenon Falls, Waterloo Recreation Area-Portage Lake campground and my local Bay City State Park are also all open... However only Traverse city, Rifle, and Mitchell keep heated restrooms/showers open throughout the winter.

I am open for any of the dates, though my wife would probably prefer I avoid the weekend of Feb 15th. I'm hoping for some real winter weather this year.

Are they open for camping or just day use...

I say we run with it. my .02.

Those are the parks that are open for camping. The first 7 offer reduced rates in the winter - I think they are $16 per night.

The biggest potential problem with a down state hang is that it might not be very wintery down here, on the other hand Waterloo is only an hour away so that certainly looks good.

Love to make it but Jan 25th is the only weekend I can make it. I'll see how the vote shakes out.

Also, a southern Mi hang would be nice

I'd like to see Waterloo, rifle would be okay but only if they open the lower lot because trees are hard to come by the last time we were there.

I don't care on the dates, but I'm interested in attending. It's been too long since I hit up a group hang, plus I'm in the middle of converting a new rookie hanger, so I'm sure he'll come along too.

Just wondering, has anyone thought of just getting into some public land in "the middle of nowhere"?

Pros: Free, tons of options, nice and secluded
Cons (at least for me): More of a car camping experience (no established trails, changing scenery, etc)

Depending on the date (hopefully wont conflict with the WI winter hang) and location I might try and make it.... Although I've said that in the past too  seriously though, would love to get out to Michigan for a hang!

Has anyone considered sleeping bear dunes? Went there years ago in the summering didn't camp, but looking at the backcountry sites it could be nice... And the park is beautiful.

I'm up for a winter hang! Just nail down the dates and location and I'll see if it works.

Regarding Sleeping Bear Dunes: This past August my buddy and I along with our daughters camped at White Pine Backcountry Campground. It's a easy 15-20 minute hike from the car and once your there, it's a quick walk through the dunes to the beach. Best swimming we've ever had with great waves! It's a fantastic location with a group fire pit, bear vault and pit toilet. No reservations are taken and in the summer the drive-in campgrounds fill up fast. I snowshoed there a couple years ago and really had a nice day of it. Pic attached...good hanging trees immediately past the bear vault closest to the lake. Note, when we met with the ranger to get our permits, they seemed confused about the hammock concept. They count a hammock as a tent, so we needed 2 sites for 6 people (2 tents and 2 hammocks). Best time to go is mid-week to avoid the crowd. If you're making the trip, might as well include a couple days at North or South Manitou Island!

That Pit Toilet leaves a lot to be desired. A few of us have camped at the White Pine site, very nice. We did a group hang on NMI a little over a year ago.

Ludington State Park. Jan 11-13. Works for me as long as I am not traveling for work the week prior or post. Waterloo would be the runner up for me at the same time.

Jan 11-13 would be the only time for me though. the second choice for me would be the Feb date

I think it is safe to say that the winter hang will be at ludington after all it is snowing up there and we all want snow on the ground for the winter hang. as far as the date lets go with jan 11 - 13 this date has the most votes. I hope to see everyone at ludington park for the hang.

I would agree as much as I'd like it in Waterloo winter is to finicky down here... Lundington is a safer option to ensure a more wintery experience...
