This one is for anyone who has hiked the Foothills before. Im going to be doing about 40 miles or so on this trail in late December. I have never been on this trail before so I wanted to make the most of it. What is the "Crown Jewel" of this Trail? I want to make sure I include this in the section of trail I will be hiking. Thanks much

Its all great but I like the section from Laurel Fork Access to Bad Creek Access. Four Waterfalls, lake Jocassee and Gorges State Park. About 35 miles including the spur trail to lower whitewater falls.

All of this trail is a jewel! I think I liked Whitewater Falls to Hwy 178 crossing the best. The bridges and waterfalls and Heartbreak Ridge are just spectacular. Oconnee SP to Whitewater Falls is also a beautiful hike, but mellower. I know a great local shuttler if ya need one.

There are no bad section of this trail but if I had to choose, I would agree with duffy. I would recommend you buy the trail guide, it's very thorough. Have fun it's a great hiking trail.
Looking forward to completing the "center" section, myself...hopefully soon. I'd be very interested in the shuttle guy's info as well. Thanks!

I'll second Duffy. Upper Whitewater Falls to Laurel Valley Access (Hwy 178). Just make sure you're prepared to do the full 30 some miles. once you get started there's no getting out unless somebody comes in by boat to pick you up at the lake.

How many days do you plan to hike?
How many miles per day?
The Foothills Trail Conference will give you a list of shuttlers' phone numbers,http://www.foothillstrail.org/index.php?page=further-information I have used two, both were nice folks that mentioned that "donations used to be $.50/mile oneway, before gas prices went up". I think I asked total mileage, then payed about .80 mile.
The local guy that picked me and wife up in a thunderstorm is a treasure, a storyteller, and helped build the trail. He would like to shuttle hikers, but is not a member of the Conference.
