So the 5 Ws:

Who: Anyone and everyone who wants to enjoy some good times telling lies by the fire, show off their setups, enjoy some fine porcine products (not canned pork brains in milk gravy nor ham hocks in a jar ) plus fixins, or has got nothing better to do than to hangout with some mighty fine friendly folks.

What: Hammocking and Barbeque (that's right real BBQ, with smoke not just grilling)

When: April 19 - 21, 2013

Where: Falls Lake State Recreational Area (http://ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/fala/main.php), Rolling View Group Campsite 4 (http://ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/fala/pics/rollingview.pdf)

Why: Because who doesn't love good food, good times, and great company?

How: Sign Up Sheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Av7XqZs_8KQMdEZ6VEN2NEJqdmEzVGo2dDU4bFgyV EE)

According to my totally unscientific method of posting a "Is anyone interested" thread I found that apparently people here really love two things.

Getting together for group hangs
Barbeque

So it is with great joy that I bring you all the (hopefully) first annual Smoked Butt Hang. A few details are still being worked out behind the scenes with my expert Events Manager (aka My lovely wife :wuv:) who is far better at organizing things like this than I am. The site has been reserved and the thumbsup given by the park office for both the hanging and the que making. Of course ground dwellers are welcome to come too. I'm sure we'll try not to look down on them from our lofty beds. :D

The group meal plan is BBQ. Now for anyone who wasn't raised right and thinks BBQ meals burgers, I'll enlighten and correct you now. Burgers on a grill is a cookout. Proper BBQ requires smoked meat. Cooked low and slow till the meat is so tender you can near about cut it with a dull spoon. Whether it is dry rubbed or sauce slathered it must be smoked to be BBQ. I'm checking around locally for good price on Butts (and maybe Ribs if the price is right) so if anyone knows a place with a good price and willing to ship please let me know. If we have multiple pit masters (or just pit master wannabes) I think it would be cool to have a mini "cookoff" to share the flavors with everyone. If people would like to bring or prepare a dish for the group meal that would be fantastic as well. Meal time will obvioulsy depend on the meat as that needs several hours to obtain the perfect mix harmony of smokey and tender. And speaking of meat, if anyone has a proper smoker they would like to bring that would be great, otherwise I will be bringing my grill which I've used to smoke BBQ several times and it works, just not a huge amount of space (especially for smoking large items). If people want to do a group breakfast that would great as well.

Now I'm sure someone is likely to bring up a potential pre/post hike question so I'll give a headstart on that discussion. The Mountain to Sea Trail (http://www.ncmst.org/)(NC's long trail) runs along the South coast of Falls Lake and is concurrently known as the Falls Lake Trail. The trail passes along the edge of the park and has a spur trail that leads directly into the park as well.

Best map I can find online of the Falls Lake Trail (http://steinbeisers.awardspace.us/googleMaps/FLT_Map/index.html)

East to West written directions of the Falls Lake Trail (as of April 2011) (http://www.ncmst.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Falls-Lake-Trail-official-description-2011-Apr.pdf)

I'd guess that most could probably do the trip between the East terminus (the Falls Lake Dam) and the hang location in 2 days. The Western terminus in one long day. Of course that depends on conditioning and just because we're not in the mountains doesn't mean we don't have some PUDs.

Since we will be on a lake paddle camping is a good possibilty. I've never paddled the lake so I can't speak to personal experience, but I've often seen people out enjoying the water. There are 4 official launch points on the lake, although you could likely also put in at the Marina. You can get an idea of where the launch points are located via the Falls Lake Park Map (http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/fala/pics/parkmap.pdf). One of the launches is a quick walk from the camp site as well as a sand beach for swimming (if the temps are warm enough of course) and a fishing pier.

And since I know someone might want to know what kinda of weather to expect. (http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KRDU/2013/4/19/PlannerHistory.html?dayend=21&monthend=4&yearend=2013&req_city=Durham&req_state=NC&req_statename=North+Carolina&activity=Camping)

As for the funding of this little get together of ours, well that's what the poll is for. :D My wife prefers the idea of everyone paying ahead of time to cover the costs of the site and the succulent pig to be feasted upon. (Of course I'd be picking up the pork in this instance.) However if someone else felt urged to provide the pork then this cost would be dramatically reduced for everyone else who would like to attend, and I would in turn provide some other delicious bit to go with the meal. I am reluctant to go with the raffle, as I know our amazing cottage vendors already give plenty to other group hangs including the MAHHA, which occurs the following weekend (so come make a week of it everyone), and I don't want to place any extra demand on their businesses. (Of course if the vendors wanted to step up and offer raffle items I'd be willing and happy to go that course as well.) No matter which way we decide to fund the event anything above costs will be split three ways: HammockForums (http://hammockforums.net/) for site upkeep, Friends of the Mountain to Sea trail (http://www.ncmst.org/) for trail maintenance, and NC State Parks (http://ncparks.gov/Visit/main.php) for park funding.

Use your beans in my stew, conglomerate the two and the sum is more powerful than the parts.

We'll call it Greshboy stew.

I can volunteer to lead a day paddle & we can find a place to have a picnic lunch on the lake for Saturday. :thumbup1:
When I've smoked meat for events I buy pork loin at Sam's Club and slow smoke it here. Then pull it at the event then heat it in my dutch oven. Since cwbybld is making beans I can bring about 6 lbs of meat with my favorite sauce. And yes it's the southern tomato based type.
When I took this pic there was snow on the ground and it took 6 hours to smoke this!

Pulled this amount will fill one 12" Dutch Oven.

How many hammocks will the group site hold? Are the other sites compatible with hammocks? Can you do a scouting trip and give us some info.? [EDIT: I was looking at the wrong loop. Now have found the group sites on the map.] Sounds like this would be worth the 5 hr. drive.

This is to expound upon my 'other' fund raising selection in the poll.

I think a raffle is a great idea, but it doesn't need to remain the domain of our beloved cottage vendors. I am on a shoestring budget, personally, so I make as much of my own gear as I can. I'd be happy to make and donate some hammocks for raffle, for instance, or perhaps some pillows or amsteel things and so on. Lots of folks make stoves, stands, tarps, etc. Many people also have gear that they aren't using but don't want to go through the hassle of listing, selling, and shipping.

So perhaps a minimum fee would apply to all, in order to ensure that the facilities are paid for. A raffle of DIY and used gear could then defray food costs for those who are cooking.

I was at MAHHA a few weeks ago, and there was way more $$ from the raffle than was needed for the event costs, so I wouldn't think that funding would be a problem given the natural generosity of our group. The amount of food which was provided at the potluck was also way over the top with plenty of leftovers going home. I cooked about 3 gallons of black bean soup and served out every drop, with some folks wanting third servings!

I think the 'Smoked Butt Hang' is going to become an instant classic, especially given the prime location. I can't wait!

Oh, also... While my own smoker does not lend itself to transport, I'd be happy to smoke some butts, pull the pork, and bring 'em down to share. I have 2 types of slaw, one classic and one that si a bit more adventurous - it has the occasional golden raisin and thinly sliced fennel.

Dagnabbit, I'm getting the itch to smoke some pork tomorrow!!

I'd say that group site can hold more hangers than campers allowed per site. Lots of good trees with plenty of room to spread out for those who like a little more privacy when they sleep.

There is plenty of room for a few tents, assuming the hangers don't claim the "flat" spots first. If my wife & daughter decide to join in the festivities they will likely be staying in a tent as well as they just don't get it.

If i make it, I have a Chargriller with a side burner box. If I don't make, my house is only 15 miles to the campground, arrangements might be possible to drop the cooker off. A buddy is make an Ugly Drum Smoker, They are a little less labor intensive. Pork shoulders are readily available at the BJ's near Triangle Town Center Mall - US 1 and 540. Since many folks are talking Pork, Walmart carries Packer Cut Beef Brisket. That's what I'll cook. 1 Packers Cut and Two Shoulders will fit on my smoker.

For those interested in paddling around the lake a bit and either don't own or prefer not to transport their watercraft there are a couple of places to rent kayaks and canoes in the area.

Paddle Creek (http://www.paddlecreeknc.com/pages/rentals)

Frog Hollow Outdoors (http://www.froghollowoutdoors.com/index_files/Page1118.html)

If one was inclined want to paddle the length of the lake I would suggest renting from Paddle Creek as they are located by the dam and you could leave a vehicle in the lower dam parking lot so that you could leave straight from there after a nice day paddle.

I have same grill, minus the side burner box. Of course I'd love to pickup the burner box for better temp control when smoking, but I've managed to pull some quite good meat off mine as is. Just takes a bit for diligence on my part to keep things just right in the box.

I like the sound of this...hammocks, BBQ, canoes...good times!
I'm in, if I dare say that this far out.

As far as funding goes...I would pay for space and or food. Might be a good idea to get at least one covered and then fund the other with raffle/donations.

Now as far as the meat goes I get my pork butts from Cliff's in Carrboro. Always good prices and whenever he has run out of butts he's cut up a shoulder to fill my order(I found a few places in Raleigh and Durham that won't. Weird, a meat market that won't cut up meat.) And on a side note his aged steaks are melt in your mouth good.

I'll keep an eye on this. Sure sounds fun.

Ok so a quick update to get correct info:

Paddle Creek (http://www.paddlecreeknc.com/pages/rentals) is no longer located at the lake dam. Due to rerouting of the road they were forced to move down river. :(

I also ran by the marina today to see if they did rentals, as some do, and unfortunately they do not. While I was out by the marina I decided to do a quick recon of the camp site just to eyeball things real quick and I liked what I saw. As I remembered there is lots of room to spread out and some fine "flat" areas for those who prefer to sleep on the ground. At the edge of the site is a nice area that should allow for water craft to beach without too much difficulty, although I'll leave that judgement up to the more paddling proficient to decide upon. Was a spur of the moment trip since I was out for other reasons, so no recon pics/video at this time, but I will schedule myself a bit of time as we get closer to the date of the hang so that people can get an idea as to the area. :D

Well after the input of those here and a bit of deliberation with the wife I've come up with what I hope to be a sufficient way of funding the hang. Instead of a pay to play fee I'm going with a donation. I am therefore requesting donations to cover the facility costs. I'm not going to ask for a specific amount as I wouldn't want anyone to feel bad if they couldn't afford to give that amount. I know how it is to be living of couch cushion change. Instead I'm asking for a donation of what ever you wish to give towards the fees. And despite what you can or cannot give everyone is invited to come and enjoy the festivities. :D

Feel free to paypal me with your contributions.

More than likely cannot attend but want to add to the BBQ bluster.......

Shug can come to the hang if he brings his BBQ Cooker. He can have my share of the pork brains.

Told my wife about the hang and that it involved BBQ she wants to go now.

March - April and September - October, 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Falls Lake main park gates, INCLUDING CAMPGROUNDS, are closed and locked promptly at posted closing time.
No entry or exit is permitted after this time except for law enforcement or medical emergencies.

The gates are locked around dusk basically, during summer they don't lock them till 9. There is a parking lot for the MST/FLT just outside of the park so that if people should arrive late they could park there and we could shuttle from the gate to the camp site as well. Or if they would like they could even night hike in on the trail that leads from that parking lot. Either way I'm sure we can get everyone to camp on the first night that wishes to be there Saturday morning. :D

How many hammocks will the group site hold? Are the other sites compatible with hammocks? Can you do a scouting trip and give us some info.? [EDIT: I was looking at the wrong loop. Now have found the group sites on the map.] Sounds like this would be worth the 5 hr. drive.

grannypat, I was there Sunday to look it over, lots of pine trees, then some more pine trees. Seems like a good bit of room and shade. I have a trip planned to Central America that will likely interfere but will be there if possible.

I'm in, God willing.

I'm trying to find the Donations Link (without looking back through all of those barbecue photos again (Jeeezz! They were making me hungry last time!!).

Any chance someone could add that link to the sign-up spreadsheet?

My daughter and friend are planning to visit on Saturday and stay for Bar-b-Que but not camp out (I'm working on that- maybe next year).

- so I'll make a triple-donation to cover them - and I'll add a bit extra to help cover that second group site rental too. I'm guessing many folks will sign up as the date draws nearer...

Thanks for this great idea Catavarie! Barbecue and Hammocks and Paddling and Hiking and great HF camaraderie all in the same place! Wonderful idea!

And dang it, Shug. You got me feeling hungry now. :D

Even if you can't contribute anything to the group meal, that is fine. I simply need to know how many people to expect so that if we need to pick up the next group site I can do so early on. There are 4 sites at the location and one of those has been grabbed up, so only 2 more left. I'd want to grab the one adjacent to ours if possible. The sheet currently shows us very close to the party limit for the first site and if I need to book the other site I will do so. Also it will give me an excuse to go out and do another video walk through of that site and all the space between the two as well. :D

I would sooo love to do this. It is a little bit of a hike for me (6.5 hour drive) for a weekend getaway. I will keep a watch on this. I have a large and small big green egg. I bring the small with me for car camping. I can easily smoke an 8-9 lb butt on the small.

Just a suggestion for all. For pulled pork, a FoodSaver works great for cooking BBQ ahead of time and reheating later. You can smoke the Q ,pull it, vac seal and freeze. Transport he frozen Q in a cooler with ice. Depending on the outside temp, the ice will last a long time because the frozen Q helps maintain a low temp. To reheat you just need a pot of simmering water. Some will use boiling water but FoodSaver recommends you keep the temp below 180 or so. Simmer about 30 minutes or so around 170-180, and it will come out almost as good as the day it came off the smoker.

02-21-2013, 13:05
That close to how I will transport mine. I smoke ahead of time and freeze the whole thing. Then transport it frozen in a Polar Bear cooler with ice packs. I pull it there and then heat it in my Dutch Oven. It comes off so juicy and yummy! I serve sauce on the side of course.

Yates place hang was great and we all talked about this hang. I am hoping to be able to make it. I might need to lose 20lbs before I go because i feel like a just gained 10 at this hang. I am sure all that "testing" will be tough.

Hoping to drop by Saturday for some bits-o-pig and see some hammocks.
Probably have one fellow hanger with me, maybe two. Won't be staying overnight.

Not seeing a lot of sweets on the list. I may help remedy that with a big batch of homemade cookies or something.

Unfortuneatly the smoker is in storage and not exactly permitted inside the apartment

People were talking about the water, what about the trail? If we can get some shuttles going down the trail a ways it might make a good hike back to the food.

Haven't had the chance to do one of these outings. I'm hoping to see some hammocks first hand like the famous WBBB. :boggle:

Whatever people I bring, besides $10/head is there anything else I need to get together to contribute to the vittles?
Bring whatever you feel comfortable with. More food is always better, but worst case scenario I'll run to the store and pick up more food when people start arriving.

Glad you guys had a good time, wish I could have made it. Perhaps I'll make the Fall Back hang.

Wow, haven't been active for a while.
You guys can't have a hang right outside my city without me!
I work nights, so timing is an issue but I have vacation sometime in April, maybe during the hang. If I can make it I'll be there and I'll probably be coming with food of some sort!
I'll read through the thread and check my vacation schedule
I have the same problem with scheduling as I also work nights. Makes it difficult sometimes to get things sorted to make these sorts of events.

Would be great if we could get shuttles set up to drop people off at the trail heads, would make for a good couple hours of hiking back, and would certainly give people some hearty appetites.

Hi Folks!
I've been looking to get into hammock camping, but I want to see one in person before I make the plunge. I have a friend who can say the exact same thing. So, if noobs are welcome, I/we might join you.
I might just come for the barbecue. I'm a native North Carolinian, so a pig pickin is my kind of scene. I would be happy to bring a pound or two of hush puppies.
I also understand there's a gear raffle going on, proceeds go to charity. If I attend, I would love to chip in with a custom-made paracord bracelet or two.

Hope to see you all there!

It'll take me a while to carefully read the whole thread and figure out how to get paddlin' and maybe hiking, but I just wanted to let you know that I signed up.

I will be riding in on a motorcycle, so I can't bring a lot of food, but perhaps I can make some chili? Won't be enough for 40, or I will need to build a trailer for my motorcycle first, but at least I will have something to share.

ANyone think underquilts will be needed for this hang? how about some bug nets? Anyone willing to bring an extra one of each my daughter would love to hang with her dad. I have a hammock, straps, and tarp for her but I am thinking UQ and bug net might be a necessity for this trip. Bringing a tent for the rest of the family for sleeping arrangements.

Anyone up for some mountain biking? i have biked the trails at Falls Lake before who wants to burn off some calories so we can enjoy our dinner guilt free?

Only four more weeks to go people, I know I'm excited what about y'all?

In other news I've received a few items from our wonderful vendors that will enable us to have a charity raffle to help cover the facility costs and the rest will be distributed between HF, Friends of the MST, and our host park. Raffle entries will be $10 a piece, enter as many times as you would like. I've already PMed those who had donated ahead of time to inform them of the number of entries they gleaned.

I will try to give a weekly update as the date grows closer.

It may be warm in the evenings (not sure about Raleigh weather that time of year), but what good is a campout without a towering inferno?

Just a meager three weeks left. Time to start perfecting those recipes and gathering together the gear to bring. L.D.Cakes is wanting to the lead a paddle tour on the lake for lunch on Saturday and for those who want to join in on that, but either don't want to drag their boats or don't have a boat of their own fret not. There are several places locally that will rent paddle gear to you. Of course the local REI (http://www.rei.com/stores/durham.html) is one option that many people are familiar with. They charge $54 (member pricing) for the first day ($27 [member pricing]) each additional day) on a single person touring Kayak and $44/$22 (member pricing) for general purpose recreational kayak. REI does not count pick and drop off days against the fee so if you pick up on Friday and drop off on Sunday you only pay for Saturday. The guy I spoke with said they only have a half dozen boats to rent so if you are considering renting a boat from them then best to call early and reserve the boat. There is also Frog Hollow Outdoors (http://www.froghollowoutdoors.com/index.html) in Durham and Paddle Creek (http://paddlecreeknc.com/) in Wake Forest if REI is out of stock of their rentals.

It's official! I'm coming! And I'm bringing my mom and dad. Mom might be in a tent, but dad should be hanging. My wife cannot make it, but will help me with some ideas on food.
I'm trying to bring a kayak and some fruit/vegitables for skewers. Since someone else is bringing chili, I guess I shouldn't bring my infamous chili...or should I. Maybe I'll bring both. Let me know.
We should arrive later on Friday and will be there before the gates close. I'm sending $20 via Paypal to Radar for my dad and me.

Make it to go with BBQ.

I wouldn't want to overshadow the BBQ. I think some type of starch would work best. Versions I'll approve for general consumption so far: "Italian," Hot Pepper, Original Hot Dog, and my "State Fair" version (by far the most complicated and expensive to make, so probably not recommended for this hang, sorry).

Might I recommend the Hot Pepper :scared: or a new version I've been working on that goes well with fresh cornbread, "The Southerner" (still in development ). If hotdog will be present, the original is always a hit. :boggle:

On a side note, my parents want to know if anyone wants/ or has already signed up for potato salad.

Two weeks to go people and the weather is looking great today. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and the bugs are buzzing. :scared: It's a good time to pretreat gear and clothing with permethrin and double check that your bug spray is still good. We want to feast on the BBQ not be a feast for the mosquitoes and ticks.

With only two weeks left it is time to put the finishing touches on those last minute DIY projects you plan on bringing. Seam seal those tarps, and whip those hammocks people because you know you want to show them off and we want to see them.

We need to finalize what everyone is bringing so please double check the sign up sheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Av7XqZs_8KQMdEZ6VEN2NEJqdmEzVGo2dDU4bFgyV EE#gid=0) and if you think of something else needed and can help with please sign up for it. Also if anyone has anything they would like to add to the raffle, then feel free to bring it and we will add it to the pile.

Who else is getting excited and hungry? :D

FireInMyBones

I'll let them know that they should bring some potato salad and I'll bring the spicy chili. It goes best on top of something. Anyone up for providing the base? Cornbread perhaps? If there will not be a base, I'll add beans to it to give it a better "meal" quality to it. Elsewise it is just a different version of my hotdog chili.

They stayed at Merchants Mill Pond State Park which is a great place to camp out if you have never been there. Told them we were going to a hang at Falls Lake State Park and they thought we were crazy to be sleeping in hammocks and should be in tents. The husband made the comment of hammocks being the new camping fad.

Well I plan to enjoy my fad at the hang. See you guys in a few more days.

Welcome to the forums. Group hangs are great. You will see so many different types of hammocks, tarps and suspension sytems your head may explode. Be sure to take pictures of things you like. I look forward to meeting you and your family.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to it.

Alright people only one week left till Q time! We are officially within the extended forecast territory (http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/Falls+Lake+NC+NCRAFL:13:US), even if that only means that they are just guessing. For those unfamiliar with a NC spring I feel I should warn you about the biggest danger. The pollen. There is an amazing amount of pollen in the air right now. Everyone I know swears they never had allergies before moving to NC and I have to believe that the outrageous amount of pollen is at least partly to blame. So if you are or think you may be affected by the pollen then pick up your allergy med of choice (there is a CVS about 10 mins from the park gate as well for those who forget).

Just one week left and time to start making the final preparations. I'll be the one with a big grin on my face while in my hammock. :D

Every time I see this thread I get a Souhern Cravin'.
So I had to do something about it. Made some fried chicken, my Mom's potato salad, green beans with bacon and naner pudding. My dear wife requested whipped cream instead of meringue on the naner puddin'. The ladies always said meringue in Summer....whipped cream in Winter.
Goodness Gracious that is Good Eatin'))))
Need some good sweet tea though.
Ya'll have fun.

I need a final count of those bringing or renting boats. I may be helping lead the Saturday lake paddle so long as I can still get a boat. I want to make sure that everyone who is going out on the lake has a PFD and what kind of boat you are bringing so I can work with LD Cakes to come up with a plan.

Thanks!

Okay so I'm newb and have been wishing for quite some time that I would meet someone else into hammock camping because I'm new to it and had tons of questions about uq and tarps and all that wonderful stuff... Until I found this forum and this post I didn't know group hangs were a thing! I thought this would be awesome chance to learn how to set up and what gear I wanna purchase in the future EXCEPT I will be ashville until may:( so my reason for posting is I wanted to ask how often are these held in or near the triangle am I missing a rare chance or am I likely to see something similar again one day?

Welcome to the forums, skyline! I'm not very familiar with the Triangle are, but there might be some good hangs near Asheville, NC before May. Group hangs are held all over almost all the time. We even welcome tenters who are hammock curious and want to meet the gang. Search in the "Outings>Hangouts, Campouts, and Trip Planning>Southeast" for more threads in your area.
Also feel free to message any of us with questions. We're happy to help.

It'll be cool that you'll be out there with us. That makes a total of three so far. You should be able to get a PFD and a paddle when you rent the boat.

I want to thank Jeremy for helping with this. I'm a busy, busy bee right now and need his assistance and am confidant he can do a fabulous job! :)

Please... by law every one has to have a PFD with them and for liability (and your own butt) everyone has to wear it.

Also pack a picnic lunch, plenty of water, sunscreen & bug juice. A good sun hat is a plus and so are some walking shoes, a sit pad or blanket or something.

The trip can range from a mile or two to many miles depending on the paddlers ability and type of boat.......
Some boats are made for puttering around with stable flat wide bottoms and some are built with sleek more narrow hulls for covering miles. If the group is this diverse the short recreational boats (8'-10') may want to group together for shorter trips and the longer touring boats (12'-16') may want to do miles. That's why we are asking about boat types, so everyone will be happy in their skill type. ;)

In any case the trip will be over in plenty of time for everyone to be back for the big event. FUN, FOOD, BOATS & HAMMOCKS! Who could ask for anything more!!

I may rent a boat (+ PFD & paddle) from REI on Friday. I haven't decided yet, but if you want, count me in as probable. Type of boat to be determined (most likely touring)...I know I'm a lot of help in your planning, but wanted to let you all know it's possible I may join you all.

Would be awesome if someone wanted to bring a large smoker, I'm willing to bring my small grill/smoker and I may be fresh smoking my additions at camp. If someone with a truck would be willing to help move it that would solve the major dilemma I'm having at the moment. Otherwise I may have to disassemble/reassemble it to get it moved.

My wife might bring the kids out during the day to see all the hammocks. If she does I might paddle around near camp with my 4yr old, that way mom can watch on shore with the 6mo old. If they come out in the evening then I'm all in for a day trip with the group.

Last call for the ponchos. I'll go by tomorrow and pick them up.

I can get these ponchos for $7+tax at my local Army Navy. I have one and they are very tough and large enough to fit over your pack when backpacking. If anyone would like me to pick one up for you and bring it to the hang, let me know.

Alright shmartypantsh... :)
I was hoping that someone with "2 wheels too many" could help me transport the kayak from and to REI, because my motorcycle is indeed not equipped for such an adventure.

I asked for a recreational kayak. The last time I kayaked was through he canals of Leiden in the Netherlands 20 years ago, so a newbie boat seemed an appropriate choice.
However, if I am the only one with a slowpoke shorty flat bottom kayak, then perhaps I should try to switch to a touring version. I will give them a call.

No need to change your boat. Go with what you're comfortable with. Depending on the situation, I might be able to help. How far away is the REI from the campground? If I come in Friday night I could help you early Saturday so we'd be back in time for the paddle, if not I'm sure someone will help.
