I'm in!! Any weekend,,, with a little notice. I know a few good spots for 4x4s and adventure bikes but I am up for most anywhere.

With enough notice, I'd drive up from Oregon for a weekend to see some more of the beautiful country you have up there in BC.

Sounds like fun. Depends on time, location, and drive distance.

I may be up for a hang, provided it is not too far up north. I can drive up from Seattle.

I'd be in. Coming from Seattle.

The "best" way to plan a hang is just to set the date, and then if people make it, they make it. If they don't, they don't.

Let's set where and when!!!

Let's set where and when!!!

Well, I would say February or later and I'd prefer Bellingham, WA or that area (due in part to several from Washington State wanting to attend). However, considering that it's a Canada hang, you guys may have to pick the location. Somewhere closer to the border if possible, somewhere relatively easy to find, somewhere with a great location/view/experience and somewhere relatively inexpensive to get to.

The problem with some of the places around here are that you have to have a Forrest Pass of some kind. Mt. Baker area seems worth the drive around here, but I'm not that familiar with actual hanging locations.

I camped up at Cultus Lake when I was a kid, but I understand that it's now crowded.

Cultus lake in feb. will be fairly quiet. But it will be about the coldest place around here. It's on a big windy lake fairly hight in the hills. I was thinking Porteau cove provincial park. It's on the ocean, easy to get to and beautiful. Google it and we will go from there. I'll look into hammock rules.

Boomer

Looks like a nice park, but also very windy, right? That looks like the highway up to Whistler, which would be quite a drive for those of us coming up from Seattle.

Mikeinajeep
12-17-2012, 00:52
I've tried to come up with a closer park, with little success. I have a few ninja spots but we would never get away with more than two or three hammocks.

Both are great ideas, or even squamish valley/elaho valley.

Cultis is a bit windy sometimes but there are tones of campsites that are up in the trees out of the wind. Porteau cove is only 20-30 minutes out of North van and north van is only a bridge away from Vancouver. Really no more than an hour and a half from the boarder to either one. Depending on the crossing you take.

I live in North Van, and drive near/past Porteau fairly regularly. I also go to Bellingham and Seattle on occasion...

From my place:
Porteau is about 45 min
Bellingham is a little over an hour - If the border is moving quickly.

Porteau is an easy park to find and has lots of trees.
(I've never been camping there, but have been diving there a lot. )

I'm not sure how well the trees are arranged at the sites for hammockers though.

The only negatives of Porteau are: *That I can think of
- Road noise
- It is literally beside active railroad tracks (expect 1 or 2 trains a night)
- popular in good weather (due to proximity to City)

I'd be interested in getting out. Depends on when, obviously
- I work every other Saturday night.

I'm only about 500km North of you as the crow flies but I have to drive 1000 km to get there...go figure

And white walkers. Winter is coming.

Long way from polar bears guys. There's no igloos here either. It's a lot like Washington and Oregon. Would be awesome to get some mericans up here though, the more the merrier.

Yeah, the wife moved us to north van while I've been up here in Alberta working. About three blocks from Lonsdale Quay.

Let's make it happen, something local? Are you guys down for a hike in spot? Maybe Haynes valley/Lynn lake area up above Lynn headwaters.

Brady
03-18-2014, 16:29
Sounds good to me. Altho I won't be back in town for at least 2-3 weeks so if that works maybe it's best you pick the spot and let's set a date.

High@HighOutdoors
03-18-2014, 16:36
Ya, I will do some scouting and research of spots up there. Might be too much snow still but I will check it out and some other possibilities. Open to suggestions too if anyone's got ideas.

I found this write-up on the hike to the lake - sounds like a spring trip is ill advised. http://www.trailpeak.com/trail-Lynn-Lake-Trail-Lynn-Headwaters-Regional-Park-near-Vancouver-BC-4580

General Comment:
I'm still a very Green Noob. I'm not sure if I'd want to do a significant hike in, just in case I need to bail. (Unlikely, but possible) I encourage you guys to do something adventurous, I'm just not quite there yet. :)

That's all good sunkmail, we can do something more accessible so that everyone can come out. Maybe we should do a car camp for the first one and get to know one another and abilities? Squamish has a lot of car accessible spots.

Mikeinajeep

I was at Cat lake last may. It's just north of Squamish and drive in. Lots of hang spots, bear bags, out houses and close enough to town to go for pancake mix if you forget it.

I'll be back on the coast in two weeks. If nothing is planned by then I can plan it. There's a few spots in the Elaho Valley I'm thinking of. Not much hiking, just drive in and hang. Easy for everyone with a first trip so we can get an idea of what everyone is looking for down the road. High@HighOutdoors, anything narrowed down?

High@HighOutdoors
04-01-2014, 00:20
I went up the canyon the other day and there's gonna be too much snow still. I think the Elaho sounds great. I know the area pretty well and there are a bunch of great spots. I'm hoping the road is plowed all the way up there. They usually stop at the bridge or sometimes before depending on the work going on up there.but if we can't make it to the Elaho there's still the squamish valley part of it though. From 20 mile to 28 or so where it crosses the river and becomes the Elaho.

FYI -

I took a look at Porteau's campsite with hanging in mind.

Of the 22 (I think) walk-in sites, only about 5 of them would be suitable for 2+ hangers. Most of the others will handle a single hanger.

I didn't look too closely at the (~44) drive-in sites, as I would rather not be next to huge camper set-ups.

Doesn't seem like this would be a good location for a group hang after all.

I would agree with that. The squamish valley and Elaho are gonna be our best bet I think.

Take care out there, HighOutdoors.

As Brady mentioned in my recent Trip report (https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php?94679-A-Trip-of-Firsts-a-Trial-run), I should put forth Cat Lake, just North of Squamish as a possible group hang location ....

Here is a LINK (https://www.google.ca/maps/@49.8040058,-123.1138819,14z?hl=en) to a google map with the location

Here is a map of the camping area:

And of one site I noticed that looked perfect for hanging:

Thoughts?

Let's talk dates and locations. Get something set so we can get together.

I work most weekends until 0800 on Saturday, or Sunday, so I'm limited there, but have every Monday and most of Tuesday off.

I do have July 13 - 21 off for vacation.

Do any of those dates work for people?

Cheers!

Is this topic still alive? I am trying to complete a personal goal of camping at least 1 night, 12 months in a row, so far each year has had some obstacle and I haven't yet completed it. So far I have October and November 2014 taken care of, trying to find a way to get out before the end of the month, thinking Golden Ears Provincial park which has a good sized section open or Rolley Lake Provincial park which is technically closed but it can be walked/hiked in to.

Kinda, the interest seems to have tapered off though.

If this plan ever comes together I may be interested.
Squamish works for me. Tons of potential and accessible to all.
I'll warn you now though that my site will smell like weed, not beer. :)
