View Full Version : CLOSED: Anybody 'down' with this?

Hey there hammocking guys and dolls! With winter having set in and our thoughts turning to the often refered to "down goodness", I thought I might float the idea of a down group buy.
The idea was being discussed (improperly) on the JRB down sleeves thread. Stromcrow mentioned that he had recently made an order for 2 lbs. of down (pictures of completed gear are expected!) from featherind.com. Curiosity piqued, I send an email for costs/quantity. It was quickly pointed out that the logistics of a group buy of down would be, well, ugly. Then Pan chimed in with this:
Buy American .... Buy Hammock Forums... Buy your down from ED Speer... You'll be glad you did.... Quality service counts.
Pan
Seemed like some pretty good advice based on everyone's experience with Ed. I personally can't say enough good about him. He actually hand delivered a SnugFit to me in Hot Springs because he knew I was in a hurry to get back on the Trail; that is service! NCPatrick pointed out that he sells them in 3.1oz bags, so the logistics got a whole lot less ugly. :D
With hopes high and email opened, I sent him an inquiry. Here is his response:
"Good to hear from you Cannibal. There’s always a discount for quantity buys at Speer Hammocks! Normally on the 3.1 oz $30 bags of 900 down, we offer 10% off on orders over $300. For orders over $600 (20 bags), we offer 20% off! Here’s the way it works out:
1-9 bags regular price $30/bag
10-19 bags, 10% off—that’s $27/bag
+20 bags, 20% off—that’s $24/bag
Orders can be filled & shipped in 1-3 days. Delivery in US is via Priority Mail—expect 1-3 business day delivery.
Be sure & call to get the discounts. Let me know if you need any more info.
Happy Holidays….Ed"
So, I guess the question is; anybody want to order some down? I will be happy to organize, sort, and ship. No extra cost, I just ask that all buyers pay for the shipping of the down to them; priority mail seems the cheapest.
Obviously, 20+ bags is the target. If, we have enough interested buyers I'm down for 6, or maybe 8 bags. I'm assuming all are in the same holiday boat with me (no extra $$$), so I'm thinking this would be a good New Year Resolution; make more stuff! :D
I'll take 3 bags. Let me know how and when.
NCPatrick
12-18-2008, 11:58
I'm up for 4, possibly 5 depending on whether we hit the 20 bag target.
Dang he raised his price from $26. Not that it is a bad deal at 30, but I am glad i bought 7 at trail days when he gave another 10% OFF. You can pencil me in for 4 if you can get the 20. Will we have to pay shipping 2x? Once to you and then again to each person. it may nix the savings. I think brave people organize group buys.
Cannibal

I'll wait to get a consensus on the timing, but I'm thinking early to mid January.
at this rate you should ask how much 40 bags are:laugh:
Cannibal
12-18-2008, 12:04
Dang! Looks like we are already close to the 20 bag threshold; cool! :thumbup1:
As my holiday gift to the forum, I'll eat the shipping to me. Just pay me for your share of the down and the shipping to you. Fair?

He doesn't have to order; he was the inspiration behind the buy. But, glad to know the Boss is open to the idea of more. I justified it to my Boss by saying I was going to make her a nice, really thick, winter topquilt. I think she left work to go make room at the house for boxes of down. ;)
If you were going to use this down to overstuff a JRB Katahdin quilt, how many bags would you get?
Cannibal
12-18-2008, 13:20
The Katahdin lists it's 'overstuffed' down weight at 21.3 oz (6.9 bags). Don't have a clue what you'd need to overstuff from there, but a nice round 8 bag order sounds good. :)

I don't know what's involved with international shipping. But, assuming it is only a matter of higher shipping expenses, that I'm passing along anyway, sure!
Put me in for 6 bags. Quilt and some down sleeves coming up! I am pretty certain Ed offers free shipping over a certain amount. I know we would have gotten free shipping on the tarp buy if we had sold a few more tarps.

Man, I really don't need this. Really. Don't need more down.
It's just that the last of my down is in the torso underquilt prototype. And it's not perfect but it's good enough for a loaner, so there's really no reason to cut it up. So if I need another down project, I'll need more down. But. I. Don't. Need. More. Right. Now.

I keep going to this post, just like Jeff. I will need down soon, but I just can't pull the trigger after getting a quilt, possum down hat and gloves, down booties, and almost everything else you guys keep throwing out there, on top of my other expenses already mentioned. But it is hard not to get at least 2 bags at that price, especially if there ends up being another price break for over 50! Heck, you might hit 75 at the pace this is going. I used to have a savings account before I joined HF. But I guess money doesn't keep you warm at night.

Something for Cannibal and Gunn to be aware of.
I purchased some down from Canada last year. Since it is an animal product and it is shipped over international boundaries it is possible that it could get checked at Customs. Mine was not checked but they warned that if it was checked that could add some extra cost to the shipping (something like $40 but I don't remember for sure).
I'm pretty sure you will have to declare what it is when shipping. Just wanted you to know.

Your call gunn. My guess is that you would be presented with a bill prior to delivery, if it's checked.
Wrap a small piece of fabric around the bags, tape it together and declare it as "down booties." :D It may work if they scan the package.

You can sign me up for 6 or 7 bags. I need to make a winter quilt and I don't like being cold!
So, when planning baffle stuffing, does it make sense to plan as though the down is 800 fill even though Ed advertises it as 900? Compromise and call it 850? I'm planning a RedRiverGorge (possibly with differential baffles if I can figure out how to do it) at 48x72x3 inch. I might go for 4 inch baffles depending on how my cold winter testing goes.

When down is rated it has been completely dried and allowed to loft for a long time (like 24-48 hrs, IIRC). If these are the conditions you'll be using your down in, use the given fillpower for your calculations. If you're going to be using it in the real world :jj: then that's when you add an overstuff. If you use 800fp instead of 900fp that's really all you're doing...adding more down than the given fillpower would require.
IMO this gets more important as the fp increases b/c the down is more gossamer, so humidity and the weight of the fabric affects it more. I doubt any down is 900fp in the field. That's why some folks say there's really no difference between 750fp and 900fp when it's used. I wouldn't agree with that w/o seeing testing results, but I agree with the principle behind it. Still...best to start with the highest quality and overstuff than to start with low quality to begin with. Especially when Ed's 900fp price is about the same as 800fp stuff elsewhere...and this way we get to buy from Ed.
I may be able to buy some after the new year. Let me discuss with the wife a couple big expenses we'll have in January and I may be in for 4-6 bags. Would be nice if we could get a bigger discount for the number of bags we're getting, but at some point we're approaching Ed's cost and we want him to make a profit as well...I doubt he has much more mark-up to give up.
I am in for three and
will go 50-50 shipping cost from Ed to Cannibal
Merry Christmas

Just Jeff-I didn't add 4 for you because you said you were still in decision mode. Just wanted you to know I didn't miss the post. That January car payment can wait can't it? :p
All I can say is WOW! I never would have thought we would be pushing the 70 mark, I figured 40 if we were lucky. I'll shoot Ed an email, but I suspect Just Jeff is right about getting close to cost. I'm not getting my hopes up too high for much more of a break, but I'll ask.
Serious question here. For those of you that have ordered down from Ed in the past, how much space does say, 6 bags take? I'm serious! If everybody on the list, plus all the folks on the fence order, I'm looking at close to 16 maybe 17 lbs of down arriving at my house!:scared:

OK. I'm both relieved and disappointed. :):(
I just got off the phone with Ed. I'll get this part out of the way; there is no additional discount for our order quantity. Ed said that he is already close to cost on the deal. Still a good deal, so no reason to be bummed.
Here's the part that I have mixed emotions about; Ed said he can ship directly to each buyer for the cost of priority mail, which is what I was going to pass along anyway. This is great and further reduces logistics problems; basically just makes me a down broker for a day. However, that means I don't get to see what all that down looks like in one place :crying. Someday.
He is going to email me the costs involved with the shipping. Again, same thing we were already going to do. Gunn, he didn't forget you either and is working up the international costs for you. When I receive it, I'll post it here. I promised him a spreadsheet with names and shipping address, beyond that Ed will be handling the shipment of down directly to each of us.
He laughed out loud when I told him we currently have 65 bags spoken for. :D He said that would almost clean him out; don't know why I find that so cool. He did say he would have no problems at all filling the order within 2 days if we ordered today, so the fact that we will be ordering after the first means that the turn around will be really quick since he has been warned. Don't call Ed today, he's loading down.:lol:
As soon as a date is decided (still haven't gotten much feedback on that) I'll blast out some paypal requests. Please DON'T FORGET to put your name & shipping address on them.
This is a first group buy organizer position for me, so all you old timers that have been through this are more than welcome to offer advise on how to best handle the collection of funds. A couple day window for payment then drop, an open window between now and ordering, day of ordering? What works best and least painful in your experience. I want everyone smiling about this order and nobody worried about their money or down. Any guidance welcome.

He didn't give an actual number, just that this would just about clean him out. But he said he can get more pretty quickly, so I'm sure there is nothing to worry about.
Why? You want more don't you? Resistance is futile!
Alright...Alright The invisible hand keeps twisting my arm! Dang it! 1 More bag. Total of 5 bags. :D

I really wish I could get in on this but I'm one of those out of work people at the moment. From experience with the PanSaver Bags Group Buy it looks like you are doing fine. PayPal is really useful for keeping track they send you an email every time you get funds paid. I just opened a new email folder and checked the emails with my list. What's key is to wait until all the funds are sent B4 buying this way your not left holding the bag of down so to speak. Turns out you got off easy on the part of organizing the shipping though Cannibal. Good Luck and have fun! I'ld love to see Ed's face when he get the final order number.
Make him join the forrum Cannibal! "Hey Ed I've gotta order for 100+ bags of down if you join hammockforums.net, I couldn't stop laughing about the minerals subforum! If it was a room I could just see Ed standing there in the dark with a head lamp on and here a echo of water dripping from way off in the distance. hilarious! Again Best Wishes with the Group Buy!
So a quick question. How many bags for 1/2 or 3/4 underquilt? Then I can start begging the wife. I mean after all I had to sell some organs to buy her a new camera that allows her to see the moon.

All depends on what temperature you want to be comfortable at. I have a 54" long quilt that I've used in the lower 20's comfortably with a little less than 8oz of down, but it all depends on how cold you sleep. For anywhere around freezing temperature, I'd say go for 2 bags if you are a warm sleeper, gram weenie and just fine roughing it, and go with 3 otherwise.

I will next time. I promise. It was just such a good deal that I could not pass it up. Even with the discounts you are all getting from Ed I think I came out better...if not morally then financially ..:D Even though I had to buy so much of it at once....almost every ounce of down has a project set up for it.
This is great! I dont see all the down that people are buying...What I see is all the MYOG stuff about to flood are forum (WITH PICS). YAY.
Beyond that and you have to suffer the thought of me rolling around semi-naked in a big ol pile of unpaid-for down. :scared::lol:

I wish Ed could slow down from his "other job" (geological consultant) & join us here, but he has explained that he's afraid that w/ his limited spare time, some may feel that he was ignoring their questions & comments because he would be limited on computer time here.
So he just doesn't want to start something that he can't give the attention it may deserve at times.
I think he needs to retire from geological stuff & just do hammocks:)

How big of a box is 100 bags of down? More importantly how big is your house Cannibal? How big is your mailtruck? My box of 7 bags was about 24 x 24 x16 and it was fairly compressed. So let's see that is 9216 cubic inches for 7 so that is 1316.57 cubic inches for 1 bag times 100 equals...hmmm.....equals.....:scared::eek::scared: . Cannibal
12-21-2008, 15:16
Yeah, there is going to have to be a pay by date so that all aren't waiting on a few. My impression is set the pay by date a day or two prior to the actual order. Open to suggestions, but we have to decide on a firm order date first.
Just Jeff
12-21-2008, 17:44
PayPal can take a couple days to post depending on what payment option you choose. Give that many folks will wait until the 1st to pay, then add a few days, it seems like 5-7 Jan should be the earliest due date...maybe 5 Jan due and 7 Jan order?
Cannibal
12-22-2008, 10:13
Executive Decision Time:
Agenda Item One (1):
The 28th of December has been moved and seconded as the order cut-off date. There were no dissenting opinions; motion passes!
Last Day To Order Some Downy Goodness: Sunday, December 28th 2008
Agenda Item Two (2):
One of our most eldest of elders has suggested a payment period beginning after the New Year. I will send out the PayPal invoices on, or before, Friday, January 2nd. The payment period will remain open until Tuesday, January 6th. This will remain open for discussion today.
Agenda Item Three (3):
The Big Tamale; the order. This will take place two (2) days following the final payment date TBD. As it stands right now, the order would be made early in the day on Thursday, January 8th. I am hopeful this will allow our down to arrive (especially for you East Coasters) on Saturday. This giving us time to prepare our down receptacles for stuffing in the morning while waiting on the person in blue to show-up at our doors. This Item will pass automatically when Agenda Item Two is passed.
Time for some PMs. Everybody on the list needs to please send me a PM including your HF Username, real name (only Ed and I will know the truth; your secret is safe), email address, and shipping address. Those of you that will not be using PayPal, I will accept money orders or cashier's checks, no worries. Just, send me a PM and I'll send you my mailing address.
Please double check the list! This has been a very active thread and I am concerned that a bag may have been missed.

Well, I sure appreciate all the 'thank yous' I've received, buuuuuuuut my life just got real easy and so did yours...I think. :)
Ed has offered a deal that I just can't pass-up. I've copied the email below, but here is the jist of it. Anybody who wants to order some down via hammock forums has until January 31, 2009 to place your order.
You will need to do it by email to the Speers; the deal is not available thru the website ordering page.
In that email you will need to specifically mention that you are part of the "Hammock Forums Group Buy" and that you are qualifying for the 20% discount.
Also, include your quantity and shipping address. Be nice and put your email address in the body too, just to make Ed's life easier.
The Speers will then send a PayPal invoice directly to you. Buyers wanting to pay with check or MO can mail their orders directly to Ed with payment. Just be sure to include the fact that you are part of the "Hammock Forums Group Buy".
Here is the email I received:
"Cannibal,
Thanks for your efforts in organizing the down orders on the Hammock Forum—you’ve done well! As we discussed, Speer Hammocks is offering Hammock Forum members 20% off our 3.1 oz bags of 900 fill down—that’s $6 off the regular price of $30, making the price of each bag only $24! Of course this assumes you have arranged the purchase of at least 20 bags, which you seem to have greatly exceeded already. To help you with the process, Speer Hammocks is willing to take the individual orders & ship to each customer. In other words, we’ll run the special 20% discount from now till Jan 31, 2009. But Hammock Forum customers must email us to place orders—don’t place your order online as the special discount will not be available there. In your email, be sure & mention the special 20% discount & include your full shipping address. We’ll send a PayPal email invoice which can be paid via your credit card. Anyone wishing to pay via check can mail their order. Speer Hammocks won’t advertize this discount, so it will only be available to Hammock Forum members. So all you need to do Cannibal is let the Forum members know that they can order anytime between now & Jan 31.
Deliveries to North Carolina addresses will incur state taxes, which are 6.75%. Deliveries to other states will not need to pay any state taxes. We will add S&H charges to each order. Shipping within the US is via USPS Priority Mail—expect 2-3 business day delivery. Rates are: 1-2 bags, $6.50; 3-8 bags, $8.50; 9-11 bags, $11.50; 12-15 bags, $13.00.
International shipping is via USPS Priority Mail International—expect 6-10 business day delivery to most countries. We ship to most but not all countries and rates vary greatly, so email us for a quote. Although we seldom have problems, Speer Hammocks cannot guarantee overseas delivery; international customers pay insurance, customs duties & assume all other responsibility in the event of non-delivery.

Just how cool is Ed Speers? Those of you that have already put a check or MO in the mail to me (shouldn't be many because I haven't even told you the shipping price until now) just let me know. When it arrives I will either shred it or return it to you; just tell me your preference. I'm sure Ed appreciates the business and I want to offer one last "thank you" to Peter Pan for suggesting that we go thru Ed. Thanks Pan!

Oh, and Just Jeff, no excuses now. Time to get in on the 'downy goodness'! Didn't want you to think I had forgotten this:
Man, I really don't need this. Really. Don't need more down.
It's just that the last of my down is in the torso underquilt prototype. And it's not perfect but it's good enough for a loaner, so there's really no reason to cut it up. So if I need another down project, I'll need more down. But. I. Don't. Need. More. Right. Now.

“… I'm curious to see what kind of bar we will have set here. Will next year's crop of down addicts break our record? We'll just have to wait and see.” Cannibal
Hummmm …
If a woodchuck can chuck wood…
Where do a down addict stuff down?
Why wait until next year (Dec-09)?
Maybe a group fabric-buy?
Since fabric is more diverse than down perhaps agree on two (three at most) types.

Yeah, but think of the money you'll save on the heating bill with a nice warm down something on/over you. :)

Fabric would be crazy difficult I would think. Not only are there so many choices in the actual fabric, but then you add in the colors and look out!:scared: However, if one were to occur, I might be up for some Momentum 0.9.

I'm done till Feb. with group buys. But, when I order my Mom .9 I might just field the question. Although I'm sure I'd be disappointed in the results after the way this buy took-off. Hard to start with a Cheesesteak in Philly only to be eating 'Cheesesteaks' anywhere else later; just isn't as good as the first one.

Already got our order last Friday - so he's still in business.
Cannibal - after looking at the 8 bags of down we got, it's a good thing that Ed offered to handle the whole thing - I don't know how you would have been able to take care of trans-shipping over 100 bags or even how many boxes Ed would have had to use to send them to you.

Forum members have snarfed up about 110 bags of down so far--& the sale continues thru Feb! That's 340 ozs of 900 fill down--should keep anyone toasty warm!
That much down reminds me that Karen & I keep our personal PeaPods, TobBlankets & SnugFits, plus all our extras, loaners, & prototypes in 2 large laundry bags--each big enought to fill a medium-size car! Our new puppy has taken to napping on one of the bags--she dissapears when she jumps on it! We have so many down quilts now, we jokenly say there's never any reason to be cold at our house!
Thanks to the DIY forum members--we look forward to hearing about all those toasty warm quilts & garments yet to be made

That's going to depend a lot on how thick the quilts, how long they are, and what design, what size jacket, etc. You should pick out your specific plans first and then decide what materials you need.

All depends on what season(s) you plan on using it with. The Jacks site is a good place to go to get an idea of fill weights on the quilts; I've no idea on the jacket, maybe 3 or 4oz?

Schneiderlein
02-05-2009, 23:13
The thru-hiker Whitney in size medium comes with 5.2 oz of down. I made mine a good bit longer in the torso and lengthened the sleeves a bit and ended up using 5.8oz of down (the additional down was from the group buy). It is a toasty warm jacket, but since you just started sewing, I would recommend to make the quilts first before trying to sew the jacket. And then, maybe practice on some other clothing items first.
The top quilt I was using at the Congaree swamp hangout had about 7.5oz of Speer down in it, IIRC. I've found it comfortable to the mid-twenties. As an underquilt, I don't think I could go much below 40 with it, unless I double it over and use as a 1/2 UQ. 12 oz of down for a full-length UQ will probably do you just fine for 3-season South Carolina backpacking, and by that I mean Fall, Winter and Spring!
