MO Hang 5
OT Thru Hike (Taum Sauk Section)
May 3, 4, 5 2013

This is a 3-day hike that will cover approximately 33 miles. We'll start our hike from the Hwy A trailhead at the base of Bell Mt on Friday morning, and end at the Russell Mt trail head on Sunday afternoon/evening. I think we can time it right so that we'll be at the Johnson Shutins trailhead at lunch time on Saturday for anyone that wants to join us at that point.

I think the best way to get cars at both the start and end points is to all meet at the Russell Mt. trailhead, then we pile into as few vehicles as we can to get to our start point, the Hwy A trailhead. It is a 45min drive between the 2 points, so we dont want anyone to have to do both directions Friday morning. Maybe we can all pitch in a couple bucks for those that drive us to the Hwy A trailhead.

Some details we still need to work out:

1. Once we find out how many hikers we'll have, we can figure out how many cars we need to take to the Hwy A trailhead. We can figure this out Friday morning at the trailhead.

2. We need to find out if overnight parking is allowed at Johnson Shutins trailhead for anyone that wants to meet up with us on Saturday.

Post up if you are definitely going. It should be an adventure!

Disco, not sure if the Russell trailhead is open any more. I know not to long ago there was a dispute about the land the trailhead was on. If it is still closed we will have to go on to the claybaugh creek trailhead on hwy 21. If you have already checked on the Russell trailhead and it is a go just disregard this message.

If anyone is looking for some outstanding bbq stop at Bailey Joe's BBQ in Ironton. It's just south of the Sonic on the east side of 21. They have some of the best ribs I've ever eaten and a cherry sauce you can use that is killer. We haven't been there in awhile but have made a 125 mile loop on the bike just to eat there. Have fun.

The Ozark Trail website says the Russell trailhead has moved a little farther up the road to the High Pointer Trailhead. It says the reroute has been completed.

I got word that there is overnight parking at the Hwy N TH near Johnson Shut-ins. Connects via the scour trail. So, if anyone wants to join us Saturday, this is probably where you'll want to park. I think we can time it so we are at Johnson Shutins for lunch Saturday.

Gideon, you will be happy to know the the gift exchange stove has worked out well for me. It fits perfectly with my DIY Heineken coffee peculator. It has the perfect amount of fuel to bring 1 1/2 cups of water to peculation and peculate for 6 min.

If you have time check it out in action below.

I am defiantly thinking of switching to this setup for our next trip. I have to get that 50 lbs down somewhere and the cook kit sounds like a good place to start.

Thanks again

I think the most important thing besides the stove is the pot you're going to use on the stove. A beer pot is perfect for this stove because it's so thin/lightweight. that same stove doesn't work quite as well with a titanium pot that's larger. I think you found it's sweet spot Digitizer!

Glad it's working so well for you! The guy who made this (not me) does really good work!!

Do you enjoy the taste of percolated coffee over any other? I think it is a neat set up and good video, but if you wanted to reduce pack weight you could switch to Starbucks VIA or some other premium instant espresso over the weight of the percolator set up. You have to start somewhere ;)

Skygzr, I have tried the VIA and a couple other instant coffee brands. I am not a big fan of the instant I do however enjoy a cup of cowboy coffee every once in a while and as for the percolator, well it was more of a challenge then anything else. I am not sure I will take it on a trip as you mentioned it just adds weight and I have enough issues with carrying to much when I'm backpacking. My last two trips out I was an enormous 50+ lbs. We are going to try and time it so we are at Johnson Shutins for lunch Saturday.

If you want to meet up with us Friday evening, I think you'd be looking at a 5 mile or so hike from the shutins back to where I think we'll be (24.5 mile mark back past the 20 mile mark). We can make sure we're right off the trail so you can find us if you choose to do that.

Otherwise, I believe Campalot is meeting up with us around lunch time Saturday at the Shutins, so you two could find each other while you wait for us.

Well we are about a month away and I have been rebuilding my system for this hike. I am hoping to drop down to 30 lbs instead of 50 lbs since this is a long backpacking hike.

I have decided to leave the monster UQ at home as the temps should be much higher then our last trip. Instead I will be bringing a JCP DIY UQ and a self-inflating pad. That is if I don't finish my next quilt before the hike.

I am also working on a bugnet that I spoke with campalot about last week. I think a bugnet would be my next highest priority for May.

I would also like to get away from the Harbor Freight tarp that I have been using for almost a year now(starting to see daylight through it). I am looking at a DIY tarp just haven't settled on one yet, however If time does not permit I will just pick up another Harbor Freight tarp and live with it.

Here is a video of where I am on the bugnet as well as some other stuff. (awesome snow storm over last weekend)

Hairbear, Just wanted to let you know you can count me in on the Bell Mountain Thursday night side hike.

Just to verify we can get there at some point on Thursday and drop one of our cars at the end destination and leave one at the Hwy A trail head.

That gives us one car at the end destination so far. We will most likely need one or two more.

It sounds like there will be 2 more groups going out on this hike. Those heading out on trail Friday from Trail head at Hwy A and those heading out Saturday heading out from Jhonson Shutins.

If we get one person from each group to drop off a car at the end destination that would be three cars and should be plenty.

This of course is just a suggestion and any other ideas are welcome.

Thanks and looking forward to seeing everyone soon :)

Yes the ts3 is the start of the bell mountain trail. That is where you leave the o t. That will be where the group catches up .
That first part is pretty rocky. We might have to come down a little further to get to a real nice spring for water .

If you feel adventurous we could go in the way i came out the last time.It would be bush whacking for the first 5 miles down joes creek then skirt the mountain going up the back side. When I say bush whacking im not using the term lightly, then we come to the trail making easier going to the top.
Doesnt matter to me we can hike your hike that day,the trail up is just as good.

digitizer101
04-05-2013, 06:45
Hiking the creek in could be fun, however I am not very good at bushwhacking when it comes to directions. Once I am off the trail I am lost for the most part hence the reason I back track as soon as I feel like I've lost a visual marker of the trail.

But I am game to give it a try if you feel comfortable with the direction. The bushwhacking through the woods part doesn't bother me I kind of enjoy it as long as I don't feel lost.

What time where you thinking of meeting on Thursday at the trail head. My guess is that we may as well head straight to the end point and meet there to drop off a car first then head back over to trail head on Hwy A.

Disco are we all planning on ending at the new Russel Mountain trail head(High Pointer Trailhead) still?

I just got back last night from hiking this entire section (Hwy A to Hwy 21/Claybaugh Creek TH) over the last four days.
I think we may need to park at Taum Sauk Mt. instead of the Russell Mt. TH.
Parts of the trail are very rugged, I did 10 miles each day and it was tough. I think we'd be really pushing it to do 36 in 3 days.
If we do Hwy A to Taum Sauk, we're still looking at 30 miles in 3 days, and I think that will be more manageable and enjoyable. It also works out better for where I want to camp each night...otherwise we'd have too many miles on the last day.

There is a nice parking lot at Taum Sauk Mt, so we can meet there Friday morning, then cram into a couple cars and head to the Hwy A TH. We'll still be on track to meet guys at the Shut Ins on Saturday for Lunch. I scouted some great spots to camp each night! Should be fun!

It looks like if we camp where I want to camp, we'll be doing aprox. 11 miles on day one, 7 miles on day two, and 12 miles on day 3.

Day 1: Hwy A to Walker Branch. There is a nice site with a fire ring there, and there should be water in the branch.

Day 2: Walker Branch to Johnson Shut Ins for Lunch, to the Scour. The Scour is a cool place to hang...neat view of the valley and the reservoir.

Day 3: The Scour to Taum Sauk Mt.. This will be a long day, but we'll see some cool stuff like Mina Sauk Falls and Devil's Tollgate.

A few notes about the terrain... There is every possible kind of surface along this trail. Mud, gravel, grass, dirt, moss, large boulders that you have to climb up, and several creek crossings (including the Black River). You name it, we'll walk on it. Choose your shoes/boots accordingly.
Water was plentiful...hopefully that will be the case when we go.
There are many areas where you are in the sun for a long time. Sunscreen is suggested.

Hey guys.

I'd have a hard time keeping up with you all on that distance anyway but I was hoping to offer any logistics support/travel/etc. you might want and at least get few miles a night in on my own.

Looks like I'll be working though. Always happens on the best weekends. :(

Nice recon disco. That should knock the winter rust off those knees.

I will wait and see who else is joining me at the shut-in parking lot. I don't want to leave anyone hanging, but if I am there early and everyone else is planning on coming later to make lunch, I will hike, in your direction in the morning and come back to get anyone else in the parking lot.

I can't speak for everyone Momedic, however, we've had women along before and I think they were comfortable; the core group has some character and isn't too crude; I've brought my 14 year old boy on most of our group hands and felt comfortable. As I said, i can't speak for everyone but I believe the core group (including myself) would go out of our way to make anyone, male or female feel welcome and comfortable.

As for the dog, I'm good with it and would enjoy it! I have a fat stupid dog that I absolutely love and would like to hike with someday. I won't bring him on a group hang because he's not trained well enough and I don't want others to have to put up with it. I've got him on a diet now and we're walking him more trying to get him into some measure of shape; I plan on taking him out on some short solo hikes this year. He's mostly chocolate lab but has some pit bull in there somewhere. He's scared of his own shadow but can look intimidating.

Anyway, I hope the three of you can make it, I think this is going to be a really great hike; normally we don't hike as much; we spend more time in camp, so I'm looking forward to the higher miles this time and the fact that it's a 3 day, 2 night trip; we never seem to get enough of each other on a simple over-nighter.

I'm sure the other guys will post.

Momedic, I as well would have no issue with a dog and as for as your wife being the only female on the trip that is entirely up to you. I welcome anyone to come along male, female and children. As long as you feel comfortable you should both come along. As Gideon mentioned this group is a great bunch of hikers and I think they would welcome just about anyone and make them feel comfortable.

I just wanted to reiterate the type of trail and hike this is. We are going to be doing 10+ miles for 3 days straight over some very tough terrain; including mud, gravel, loose rock, along with climbing up boulders and stream crossings.

This is not the hike for first-timers or the weak-hearted. I'm not saying this to scare anyone off, but I want to paint a realistic picture of what this hike will be like. It's no leisurely stroll in the woods, so be sure that you and anyone you bring along are prepared physically and with prper gear before you decide to come along.

Is a small matter

Rocks, twigs, some dirt and a little more then 5 to 6 hours of walking a day.

(This trail is a beast, just so everyone knows it is no easy task to defeat it without being defeated. I watched some video on it.)

As of today, I still have plans on coming. Although I am going to kick some dirt down south next weekend. I think my Wife is coming to this one as well. She normally only hikes/camps in the summer. She gets cold in the shade.

THE PLAN

I cant edit the first post anymore, so here's the updated plan...

Friday 8am: Meet at the Taum Sauk Mountain parking lot. Pile into a few cars and drive to the hwy A trailhead to start our hike.

It was nice meeting you Campalot; sorry we won't be seeing more of you! Life happens and sometimes you have to make the move; tomorrow I'm flying to Ohio for a job interview; long story but I need to hit the big "reset" button in my life and this may be the opportunity.

I hope it works out well for you!

As for you guys corrupting Pyro while I sleep; well believe me my son and I have an unusual relationship; he tell's me "almost" everything, even about ding dong ditching :D

Looking forward to seeing the rest of you in a few weeks; I desperately need the trail time!

Gideon
How have you been Gideon, looking forward to seeing you again as well. Am I reading this right? We have a chance of loosing you too?

Hey RNGN, the Darien UL is absolutely great; I love it and it's comfortable. I really like the reversed whoopie slings and dutch hooks. This will be the first hike where I've been able to go with my "optimized" UL setup, so I'm excited about that. Based on what Disco has said about the trail, I'll be glad for the light pack weight. If I'm not mistaken, you have the same hammock, right? How do you like yours?

Maybe he can be like the other Bear and drink the pee next time. Hammock Survival with Hairbear. I would watch that show lol.

Can you imagine the morning breath? There was a guy I worked with that did that on a dare. Some guys were talking about what they would do for 100 dollars. As the stories went around the table each one got a little more gross.
Finally this guy says he would drink a cup of his own pee for 100 bucks, before you knew what happened a bunch started throwing money on the table.
He went into the bathroom peed in a dixie cup ,and brought it back to the break room.
He did it ,but when the bosses found out they fired him for bringing a cross contamination into a food production area. Can you imagine trying to get unemployment for that!
He got a doctors excuse to get his job back . The doctor stated that he had a vitamin p deficiancy.(made up the last part):shades:

Missouri named "best trails state."

4/17/13, 2:37 PM

JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri has been named the “Best Trails State” by American Trails, a national, nonprofit organization working on behalf of the nation’s hiking, biking and riding trails. The award was announced today at the International Trails Symposium in Arizona. The national award is presented every two years to the state that has made tremendous contributions to promote and improve their trails system.

“Missouri has an outstanding system of trails that can accommodate a wide variety of activities ranging from a short walk to a hike through the wilderness,” said Gov. Jay Nixon. “This award is a great honor for our state, and I encourage all Missouri families to get out there and take advantage of this incredible resource found right here in the Show-Me State.

Missouri State Parks offers almost 1,000 miles of managed trails and the state claims more than 500 miles of National Recreation Trails designated by the U.S. Department of Interior. The state lives up to its reputation as “Gateway to the West” with significant trails including the Lewis and Clark, Trail of Tears, Santa Fe National Historic Trails passing through the state and the Pony Express, California, and Oregon National Historic Trails beginning on the western border. Missouri is also the home of the Katy Trail, the longest developed rail-trail in the nation.

“Missourians can walk, hike or bicycle on 230 incredibly diverse trails throughout the state park system,” said Sara Parker Pauley, director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. “Spending time outdoors exploring our trail system not only provides us with a great adventure, it also provides us with an opportunity to improve our overall health and well-being.”

“The contributions of staff, volunteers, and support groups have made Missouri’s state park trails stand out as the best in the nation,” said Bill Bryan, director of Missouri State Parks, a division of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. “We are proud of these efforts and look forward to continuing work to build on our network so even more families can enjoy trails in our state,” added Bryan while accepting the award on behalf of Missouri State Parks.

The award also recognized Missouri State Parks for a project that began in 2008 to inventory and manage trails, which is being used in a statewide effort to consolidate and coordinate trail data. Missouri State Parks recently released Trails of Missouri State Parks, a publication that provides detailed information on 230 Missouri State Parks trails.

it is 3 hours, but if he is going to come through St.Louis, he could drop you at my house on the way south to Branson. If he takes the normal route from MN to Branson, which is through Iowa City, IA, he will pass within 2 miles of my house at the intersection of HWY 40 and HWY 70.

I very well may do that. He is going to give me a call when he's done with work and I'll figure out his schedule. I'm not sure if he is driving up Thursday or Friday afternoon. But, worse case scenario I should be able to atleast make it there for one night by just using the car to drive on over while he is visiting his folks. I'm about 90% sure I can make this one. :)

Well guys; got some news...I'm still going to make the hike (the upside...for me, maybe not you :D) but the downside is (for me, maybe not you) is that It'll be my last. I got a job offer today in Ohio and I'm pretty sure I'm going to accept. Could have me leaving the area in 3 weeks.

I'm excited, scared, and already missing you guys; odd how you got under my skin so quickly

We can play it safe or we can put ourselves out there a bit sometimes. One way we stagnate, the other has risk but also the opportunity for growth. I don't want to be done growing so for the sake of my family and myself I think it's time to put myself out there a bit.

Anyway, looking forward to our hike even more than I was.

Yes I have camped on that loop- 200' off the trail and you can camp anywhere along there.
It is a fairly straight forward hike from the Berryman campsite ( Hwy 8). it is 12 miles to Hazel Creek Campsite and then 15.5 miles to Narzarenko Spring or 16 to the intersection with the Council Bluff loop, this puts you just 11 miles from the Hwy A parking lot. there are several ways to do this section to stop at springs or river crossings, if you don't want to stop at Campgrounds and even out the mileage.

What I think we’ll do is if you don’t mind is drop us off at DD or Council Bluffs & we can hike the loop then head south to Hwy A TH, if we are running ahead of time we could add in the Bell Mtn section. This gives us the option to extend or not, because I’m sure you all are gonna wear us out. Also will going to Council bluffs take us past the HWY A TH, if so I could leave supplies in my truck so the 3 days with you all I dont have to carry a weeks worth of food.

BTW how secure is Hwy A parking area, just worried about vehicle getting broken into?

Yes, they are all close and all doable. Don't carry anymore than you need and we can run back by the Hwy A trail head and then get you to the DD trailhead. I don't see any problems with parking at the Hwy A trail head. it is well used and local, but the chances of any vandalism are just about the same anywhere (except maybe south of VanBuren and then I wouldn't leave a car no matter what! :scared:), we will all be leaving cars both at the Taum Sauk parking lot and the Hwy A parking lot. - anyone else have anymore local info about the parking lot, feel free to jump in with comments.

Also will going to Council bluffs take us past the HWY A TH, if so I could leave supplies in my truck so the 3 days with you all I dont have to carry a weeks worth of food.

BTW how secure is Hwy A parking area, just worried about vehicle getting broken into?
Ive never had a problem at either trail head, even when vehicles were left for days.

Just a reminder since I can't change the outdated info in the first post anymore...

THE PLAN

I cant edit the first post anymore, so here's the updated plan...

Friday 8am: Meet at the Taum Sauk Mountain parking lot. Pile into a few cars and drive to the hwy A trailhead to start our hike.

Here's a map that shows the Taum Sauk lot and directions to the HWY A trailhead lot:

Yeah, I was pretty proud of the 20 lbs reduction and I will be working to get it even lower.

The tarp seams to be sealed after the 3rd attempt at sealing it. I will be bringing it on the hike next week so we shall see how things go. If all else fails I do have an emergency blanket I can pull out and suffer through it.

Hairbear, I may give you a call tomorrow after work if you are going to be around I wanted to discus our plans for Thursday and Bell Mountain. I would call tonight but I have a scout meeting and they tend to run late every Wednesday.

I think the quality of the gear is pretty decent. It is my first down item. 20* with an extra ounce of down. Came out right at about 25 oz. Seems very warm so far. I have only used it a few times. If I get a down underquilt I will probably go back to EE.

Going light is about what you can really do without relying on your brain more than gear- but making fire is always a nessessary ability

I am trying to figure out the logistics involved in making it to this one.

I have something going on Thursday night, and I don't really think it would be a good plan to leave KC at zero-dark-thirty Friday morning and then do 11 miles.

I am thinking that I may head down Friday morning, and hang Friday night somewhere near the Sat. meetup location.

I'd be willing to do the first section of trail on the back-end with you Skygzr.

I hope to have my pack down to ~ 2 lbs., but of course I will be sleeping in bubblewrap and eating packing peanuts...but hey, I'll just float across any water crossings

Ramen, depending on what time you get there Friday morning, you wont be far behind us. We probably wont leave the HWY A trailhead until 9 or so. You could go to the HWY A trailhead and just catch up to us, or you could try the Goggins Mountain trailhead and hike over the Goggins Mountain Loop to the OT and then south the 2 miles to where we are camping the first night, by Walker Branch.

Right now, the lows are predicted to be 40-45. That's a little cooler than I was hoping for. I might have to go with a little extra down and increase my pack weight a bit.

RamenShamen
04-26-2013, 09:24
Catch up with you? Maybe, if someone puts hobbles on Hairbear.

I probably wouldn't make it down until a quarter past noon-ish , and I am completely unfamiliar with the area.

What's the total approx. distance from the Goggins Mountain TH to the Walker branch area?

Spiffyguy
04-26-2013, 09:41
I am hoping to make Taum Sauk by 8 on Friday. I plan the zero dark thirty route. Probably leave STL about 530. Will be a long day but it builds character right? I am debating on adding in my puffy jacket or not. Figure the low temps will be when I am all snuggled up in my quilt. At least that is my thinking but my IX underquilt leaves a little to be desired. Might just have to add weight!!!!

RamenShamen
04-26-2013, 09:41
Let's see if I understand this.

From Groggins Mnt TH I'd go SW to the Groggins Connector, and then south a couple of miles?

Correct. I attached the map. Take the south part of the loop, (from the Goggins Mt TH, you'll stay left), then left at the OT. It looks to be 4 - 5 miles from the TH to where we are camping, right by Walker Branch.

Your other option is to go to JSI and hike back to Walker Branch, getting to the OT via the JSI Trailhead. It looks like about the same miles.

I've not parked at either of these locations, so you will want to check into the overnight parking situation there.

RamenShamen
04-26-2013, 12:45
