I'm thinking of heading down to Chicago for the Big 10 tournament at the end next of next week and was wondering about hanging opportunities nearby. I would prefer something more isolated but even a campground that allows hanging would be cheaper than a hotel room. Something within an hour of downtown would be nice.

Suggestions?

Chain O Lakes state park would be close to the train. Illinois state beach is another option. Indiana Dunes on the east side. Not sure what is open.

Chicago camping is very limited. Indiana Dunes if open might be your closest bet. Consider spending time hanging out around Chicago. Lots of cool places to see and do. Take a hike downtown and around the lakefront for free. We also have some cool museums like the Art or Shed Aquarium.

not many "legal" places but I "stealth" in the Forest Preserves south of chicago many are reachable from Metra Trains, and Public buses Preserves are North , South and West

Near Downtown would be tough but there are many hide away spots near the Lakefront, but safety may be an issue in more congested areas and the POLICE will be more likely near the Lake(Downtown)

Dont shower and dress like a bum and hang in an alley ;-). Only stealth i know of would be in the Palos FP SW of the city. The Metra will get you close enough to walk. It is also a pretty safe area.

I lived in Waukegan for several years and that's out of your one hour range.

And I really dont have any suggestions for you.
But, I will say, "be very careful."

Maybe someone can let you setup in their backyard.

Thanks for the input folks. Not going to be able to make it down this weekend anyways but still want to visit the city at some time (even if it means a hotel, not a hammock).

There are tons of places along the canal routes. I would check very carefully for signs of other folks living there. Or the mob burying people :scared:

There's camping in Elgin, but a 3 mile walk/bike to a Metra Station. Some Metra rides allow bikes on board, but you'd need to check the schedule. Just an option to consider if you come between May-October.
