Iam a tent camper that cant stand any more of the stiff sholders. I was camping over the summer who was using a hammock, i was intriged with the equipment that she was using. I'm trying to figiure out what hammock i should use. I camp all year round, iam going to be spending my summer in wisconsin so i need something that going to hold up. I would also need to know what i need to get to stay warm.

Thanks

Take a look at these three threads, designed for new hangers:

http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=216

There is also a video tutorial for newbies in the works, but it probably won't be available for at least a month or so.

And as always, feel free to ask questions! Welcome to the Forums!

Welcome to the forum.

There are a few options here. First do you want to make one or buy one premade?

If you want to make your own stuff there are a lot of people here including myself that do that, there are also a lot that do not.

The big manufactors are www.spearhammocks.com and www.hennessyhammocks.com . The spear's are top loaders and the HH are bottom loaders with an attached bugnet. I am currently making a top loads HH style talked about in another thread.

In terms of warm there are a few options out there. www.jacksrbetter.com offers down top and underquilts. I own a nest and am really happly with it. Spear hammocks offers a peapod that some people love. It is on my list of things to try out. Some people use a closed cell foam pad or inflatable to stay warm underneath. Bottom insulation is the key there. You will find this out in about 2 seconds when you get in one.

In terms of top quilts, you can use for current sleeping bag as a quilt. That is what I do. A little heavier, but I already have one.

I spent a summer in Madison, WI a few years back. As I remember it I still needed a jacket on those cold early morning on the lake.

i want something thats made, a college student with little free time, and that time i like to spend in the woods. I do like the fact of the bottom loading. i looked at his web site and dont know which one to pick.

Pick a Hennessy based on your height/weight. I'd stay away from the racer models, but others use them on a regular basis. They just don't look sturdy enough to me.

How much do you weigh, how tall are you, and how much do you want to spend?

I would go with the Hennessey UL Explorer Asym. Should be plenty of room for you. BD

I agree w/Bird Dog. I'm your height and weigh a little less. To save weight, I used an UL Backpacker Asym for my first hammock for nearly 2yrs, even though I knew I exceeded the recommended height. It worked, but it seemed I would always drift one way or another so either my head would be touching the side or my legs would be a little uncomfortable.

So recently I bought the above-mentioned UL Explorer. No more problems! It's just right, and the weight penalty isn't huge, IMO.

You're going to love it.:D Don't forget to buy the Snakeskins! And to stay warm I use the Nest & No Sniveller from JRB.

I second that. I'm 6'0" and my UltraLight Backpacker Asym is a little too short for me to get completely comfortable.

You'll be happy with the Hennessy UL Explorer. Go to www.hennessyhammock.com and click on their Demo and Clearance sale (front page). E-mail them and have them send you their current list for sale. I've bought two of my three Hennessy hammocks this way. They both looked brand new and never used. Probably were.
