Howdy!

Just curious how many would be interested in group hangs around Pittsburgh PA and the surrounding areas.

If there is interest, Ill start scouting out places. If you have any suggestions, post them.

Thanks!

My daughter is going to school out there, so I may very well be interested in a hang there. :)

I'll keep an eye on this one

Does this mean you're gonna be hanging there, or just letting us know you'll be in Pittsburgh?

Where and when would we be thinking such an event may take place? An idea of location and dates may help us drum up some more interest.

Based on my limited time there I would not be hanging over night but would, based on location, stop by the site of the hang to meet some home town hangers.

The Laurel Highland Hiking trail has some great shelter areas to hang. It is relatively close to Pittsburgh. Just a suggestion. I like the idea of a SWPA hang. I'd do my best to support that!

Edit: Ya'll typically free on weekends? F-S-S sound good, or just S-S?

Any preferences between a short hike in vs Car camping?

+1 to Quebec Run. Just took my 7 & 9 year old nephews on their first non-car camping trip this past weekend. Great place to get a wilderness feel while still being close enough to bail if things went horribly wrong!

Racoons sounds good. Moraine would also be a nice spot if we could get one of the group camp areas. Also Laurel Hill Park is nice.

As for the date for the hang, I just sent for a Warbonnet Superfly and was told it could take 3-4 weeks to get it so I hope hang would be after that.

I'm still in no matter where everyone decides. All locations suggested are very nice and should serve well for a group hang.

Quebec Run is where we took our young scouts on their first backpacking experience. It's not a terribly big area. There's no car camping there. You need to backpack in a bit. So it's good for an overnight Sat or Sun. Or if you have far to drive. Hike in short distance on Friday and then hike longer on Saturday, out on Sunday.

Trail map here (http://www.ohiorivertrail.org/attachments/070_Forbes%20Quebec%20Run%20Wild%20Area.pdf).

Just a thought to get thing going. How about Qubec Run sometime in Aug. Keep in mind I am going by other posts that the area would be good for a hang. I would be willing to go out to check the area if anyone is interested we could meet for a day hike and check it out.

I would normally meet you but I broke my foot in two places last week and have another 3 to 5 week healing time before I can take off this walking boot. I asked the doctor for a hiking boot but he said "Sorry, I'm all out." Quebec Run is about 30 - 40 minutes from my door to the trail head.

Sounds like that hurts. Darn doctors always out of hiking boots.

This is a little far north, but I'll be hanging near Spartansburg, PA on 22 and 23 June for ham radio Field Day. That's about 30 minutes southeast of Erie, and about 90 minutes, maybe 2 hours north of Pittsburgh. It's on private property, but I have permission to invite whoever I want, and we've got the run of about 1,000 acres on a timber tract. There will be at least three other folks there so far, but I'm the only hanger.

While it's mostly a ham radio event, there will be a camp fire, I'll have my smoker up and running, a grill, and we'll likely have us a Wooo Buddy(tm) good time.

I'll have a complete backpacking ham radio setup there with me, in addition to the larger gear, so if anybody has ever been curious about ham radio, on or off the trail, there really isn't a better opportunity for an introduction. This is like Christmas, Labor Day, Memorial Day, and St. Patrick's Day, all rolled in to one for us hams.

If anybody is interested, drop me a line. I'll probably start a thread just for this event as well.

Do the rangers have any problem with hangers in the Laurel Hills Park car camping areas? I'd rather not pique their interest to ask, if they'll already exhibited tolerance or otherwise.

I have not camped there specifically, but I have hammock camped at multiple state parks with no trouble.
