View Full Version : Using the Hammock Forums Logo.

Hey everyone,
As we've all noticed, HF is really growing! Along with the increase in the number of members, the enthusiastic demand for HF labeled and logo'd gear has also grown. Right now there are biners, flags, the Cafe Press store, etc. That's great, and as time goes along, we're confident there will be even more...
Going forward from now though, we ask that anyone who wants to use the HF name and logo on gear please contact one of the Admins or Mods first for approval. We don't want to stifle any projects or creativity and we are always in favor promoting the forums in a positive way...but we do need to be sure that the HF name is not misused. Also, we can help out with making the gear available to all (stickies, announcements, etc).
Thanks for your cooperation.
Happy Hanging!:D

And here I was just about to roll out the HF branded 32 oz recycled Gatorade bottle... Fill a niche market and reduce waste to the landfills all in one swell foop.

Does that mean I have to have the HF logo tattoo removed from my derrière? :scared::lol:
Would some sort of Creative Commons license (http://creativecommons.org/about/licenses/) be appropriate?

Not necessarily. The HF name and logo are copyrighted.
Like HC4U said, this announcement isn't about stopping the use by the members here, but rather just letting the staff (attroll in particular) be aware of and sign off on items it is used on.
Not necessarily. The HF name and logo are copyrighted.
Thanks for the clarification. Guess I just overlooked the (c) symbols.

okay... now bear with me here... this is all hypothetical but I use the HammockTV intro on all my vids and I have hammockforums.net on the title page. The vids are stored off site on youtube and embedded here. Now let's suppose some guy with more money than brains offered to purchase the We Don't Sew" series from me for a small fortune that I could not turn down. Who owns the content that gets posted here? Is it mine... even though I brand it with the HF logo? Is it "yours" because of the logo and the embedded placement here? I believe I own the content rights for the placement on youtube. But now you've got my head spinning.

Serious topics make me regress a bit I guess. ;):D
Attroll is pretty good about giving permission, I think the goal here is just to make him aware of what he is giving permission for, not trying to restrict it.
I'm completely amazed that HF has been as generous with the logo as it has been. This is probably a long overdue post and I completely support it.

But now you've got my head spinning.
This really isn't a complicated scheme designed to do anything...and HF is not claiming content ownership of the ideas and designs shared here. The *entire* intent of the announcement is to prevent some unscrupulous person out there from using the HF name or logo to market gear.
HF will be and always has been about the free exchange of ideas related hammocks and hammock camping.
*Let's not let this devolve into an armchair lawyer discussion*

angrysparrow... I'm sorry I should have addressed that in private. But there is a serious reason I asked the question.
I do support the announcement. I do support the inclination behind it. Flashback to sadder times. I do apologize.

I saw that, but 'nuff said...
Hey angrysparrow, or atroll do you guys have any coffee mugs for sale with the logo on it. How about hats or t-shirts. Just asking cause i would buy some of that. If you do where do I look.

Hey angrysparrow, can someone come up with an HF logo patch? I would love to have it emblazoned on my Backpack. Seriously.
What size would you want the patch to be?

2" round patches are nice; I think that's the size of all my Trail Patches.
I'd buy a few of those too...

ATTroll, That's a great avatar....I've been a supporter of the Appalacian Trail Conservancy for a number of years, tho at a fairly modest level. I'd like to be a major benefactor, but I'll have to wait for an Obama Trail Bail and merely pay my fair share of the taxes that support the program. I do occasionally give an AT membership for a Christmas or birthday present to someone whom I think may appreciate it, and who I hope may pick up the renewal in subsequent years. We had all better be cognizant of the fact that there are forces working against the preservation of the outdoors we all love. When too many of us take our "wilderness" for granted we will find that it no longer exists.
Sorry about being off-topic...sometimes I have something to say and I just blurt it out.
Yeah I agree with Cannibal, mabey a 2'' round patch would look great
I don't know how well the writing would turn out on 2 x 2 inch patches.
Here is the size of what a 2 inch patach would look like.
Yeah I think it probably needs to be twice that size then. What would you suggest to make the writing look better?
That's pretty small. Let's do a buff instead...!!!
the Cafe Press store REALLY REALLY needs an HF logo Toque.
its not warm all the time :D

I don't think it is bad at all. Can you read every patch you have from 10 ft. away? The logo draws you in, to look closer at the patch.

I'd like to see some t-shirts or ballcaps, etc. available.
It would be pretty popular and definitely a good way to promote Hammock camping.

As long as the item is for personal use and not for sale, we allow the use. There are a couple of conditions though. If it's something you want to pursue, just get in contact with any of the mods and we will walk you through it.
Could I get a copy of the "blue moon" logo for personal use?

You need to PM a moderator to discuss the use.
Pretty much all of the logo use requests begin with PM'ing a moderator.

Not necessarily. The HF name and logo are copyrighted.
Actually, licenses like the Creative Commons family *require* copyright law to function - you have to have a legal claim to something before you can attach license terms to it. So, saying "it's copyrighted" and asking if one of the Creative Commons licenses would be appropriate are not mutually exclusive.

I would love a shirt or mug or really anything to help promote my addiction, but I'm a poor father trying to put his kids through college (:(). With that in mind, any thoughts of having these items (mugs, buffs, shirts, stickers, etc) at the various gatherings (MAHHA, NEHHA, etc) around the country? It may be "good for business", but also good for promotion. It may also be a nice thing for everyone at any of these gatherings to get a free sticker (which can't cost much), to help promote the site. I would stick them most places (if my wife would let me ).
If there is anything I can do to help move this forward, let me know.

We are hoping to open the store again after the new year (no promises). Our first order of business right now is to get the forum software update before the end of the year.
