I'm planning to go somewhere in August, but don't have anything set up yet. Anybody interested in getting together for a miserably hot weekend in the woods?

Yea! Can you pick me up on the way?

Hey, if you're really interested, we could meet halfway? Just a thought.

Pencil me in, maybe that place you and Gimpy were talking about?

The Old Truck is not the best choice for making the trip, but if somebody from this area wants to car pool I could be in. Would depend on the date.

Ya, I was thinking about that. Maybe an overnight on the 17th? I'll check with Gimpy and see if that works with him.

I might be in. This car camping? or hiking a bit?

There are some trails, but we don't think they are too long. Guessing about a mile or so. We are thinking about hiking in and staying somewhere on the trail. When we did an outing to check out the area, it was apparent that there hadn't been anyone out there in a while. Could be fun.

I might be interested in making a drive and meeting some other hammock type texans.

Cool. I'll go ahead and post some coordinates.

The location is near Strawn Tx. If you go into Strawn and go West on 2372 it will dead end into a small park. We plan on parking at that small park and hiking in a bit.

Here are the GPS cooridates that I came up with:

Lat: 32.533699
Long: -98.562384

(Looking at Google Maps) Looks like I20 to TX 16, exit going north towards Strawn (pop 739), intersect FM 2372, turning west. It dead-ends at Tucker Lake? Looks like a split going on the north side of the "lake" and the east side.

Hey Caveman, Are we looking at Friday the 16th and Saturday the 17th then?

rhjanes

and how is water out there? (lake water or should we plan on packing in?)

Caveman

I figured we would just do Saturday night (since it's so hot). Maybe meet up out there around 1pm or so?

Nothing is set in stone, so if the group wants to change it up just let me know.

The lake looked pretty good, but depending on where we end up staying I would recommend hiking water in.

Is there any floatable water near by for kayaks? Seems it just might be hotter-n - hell bout then.

Caveman

The lake might be good for paddling around on.

Caveman

I can't afford more than 1 alite chair :) You're on your own there.

Looks like we might have a pretty nice weekend for a hang. As of now my phone shows a high of 91* and possible rain. Should be fun.

Isn't it strange how hammockers look forward to that rain on the tarp while most tent campers dread it?
The sky was acting up last nite and I ran and got my blackbird and set it up in the backyard, only to experience just a few patters. :(
What's even funnier is when I told my wife what I was doing she just shrugged. :)

Caveman
08-12-2013, 14:55
Hehe....That is funny. When the forcast has rain my wife has started telling me about it. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not? :)

It was a nice night to be under a tarp at my place. It rained for several hours real nice and easy. Good sleeping weather.

OK! Saturday at 1pm at the park.

Some of us are meeting at Mary's at 1130 for the chicken fried steak and anyone that would like to partake is more than invited.

Sorry guys, too many miles for an overnighter. Next time hopefully. I'm planning a 1 week bicycle ride for September across MO. along the Katy Trail so I'm thinking I'll get some "hang time" in to rest my tired and bruised butt then. Ya'll have fun.

Ray... You can't miss Mary's. It's right there on 16.

I might end up running a little late. Does anyone have a link to trail maps or have more information about where to park?

Caveman
08-16-2013, 07:12
The GPS coordinates that I posted will put you right at the parking lot. The driving directions will also land you right where you want to be. The road dead ends into the park where we will be parked at (its a small park so you can't is us).

There's not really a trail map, but this is a link to the information that I have.

http://pennys-tuppence.blogspot.com/2011/12/new-state-park-strawn-tx.html

Not really sure where we will be calling home for the night, but I think the trail is only a mile or so, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding us.
