Since my A T hike got chewed up till next year,I thought that I would try to squeeze in a dream hike when I go to San Diego for my sons marine graduation.
I want to hike in a red wood forest for a week .
Can anyone recomend a good trail?
Ive never been west of the rockies, what kind of conditions can be expected in december?

In December, a very good chance of rain and wind, but if it's nice, it's really nice.

Just got back from Central CA yesterday - hiked in Pfieffer State Park. I think that's about as far south as a good stand of trees go. Its a little south of Monterey and probably 7 hours from Pendleton.

Here is a resource that might help: http://www.redwoodhikes.com/

There are several hikes in the Santa Cruz area also that take your breath away.

The sequoias are a little further south but they are east of where I live. They have redwoods there, but you might be after the coastal redwoods which are a little different.

Hairbear: Find the book "Afoot and afield in San Diego". I lived there for a couple of decades and there are quite a few trails just east of SD. That book will give you lots of options.

www.redwoodhikes.com

Shows coastal redwood groves/parks. Also has a page about Sequoias.

For Sequoias, try the Giant Forest in Sequoia NP for the highest number of very large trees. The largest sequoia is there. The coastal redwoods range as far south as Silver Peak Wilderness, but the more impressive groves are farther north (Northern California).

You're not going to hike in a grove for a week. The majority of the groves of redwoods are not in backpacking territory, and where they are, you find that they don't extend for miles and miles - they live in isolated places that take maybe a day or two to explore. The very largest of the sequoia groves, in Redwood Canyon, is not even large enough for a week of hiking. You could drive to parks north of San Francisco and find places to car camp and day hike in sequoias day after day. Southern groves of redwoods just aren't that big. A single night or two night trip (if you combine it with a hike to Cone Peak) would be Vicente Flat.

Do your research on water sources if you go into the Ventana Wilderness. Many are dry, due to the horrible drought here. The fire ban is still very much in place despite their allowing fires in campgrounds again (after months of no fires at all whatsoever).

If you go to Sequoia make sure to take longer straps! I just went a couple months ago and my 8 foot huggers wouldn't even wrap around some of the trees!

And do not hang from redwoods or sequoias of any size - they have very shallow root balls.

There are big pines and many firs. A minimum of 15 feet per strap for a strap/whoopie sling suspension would be ideal.

Might want to aim for coastal areas, the groves spread out in the mountains will most likely end up being snowed now (big storm today, hallelujah). Our local grove (http://www.kernvalley.com/news/trail100.htm) will definitely be out as the Forrest Circus will close the gates on the Western Divide Hwy. Most Redwood groves here will be more like day hikes and our local one will not allow you to camp inside its 1/2 mile trail.
