If anybody knows how to get ahold of Doctari someone should call him and put a bug in his ear about the hang since he's not on the forum any longer, it would be great if we have as good a turn out as we did for the Hoosier Hang back in March

Welcome to the forum, the exact location has not been determined yet but it is usually held just west of you at the Charles Deam Wilderness area. We would love to have ya!

I'm not positive but I think I heard talk of the Halloween Hang being at Crescent Valley this year, it's the same location we had the Hoosier Hang, really good location ample water supply, the creek actually forks and runs along both sides of the valley and there are plenty of trees and a nice fire pit already and it's less than 2.5 mile hike

That would be great! I stopped by there in April and just missed some of the group. Hopefully I can make it this year wherever it is.

That would be cool Mark, I believe it's usually the weekend before Halloween, it would be awesome if you could make it, if you come freeze a steak a couple days before the hang we cook steaks directly on the coals in the fire

I have only been hammock camping a few times over the course of the last year, never before that, and I am new to the forum. I live in southwest Indiana, only a few miles from Trailmedic who I've known most of my life. Anyway I have seen the videos from previous hangs and if everything works out right I am hoping to be able to go to the Halloween Hang. If I do get to go this will be my first time to hang with anyone from the forum.

Take a look at the videos on post @11, and the other threads from past Hoosier and Halloween hangs. Tents are welcome of course, Kids too. The last hang a couple weeks ago my two grandkids came with my son and daughter-in-law. There is some drinking done by some around the campfire at night, but the kids were in bed asleep by that time. Everyone whom I have ever met there are great people. There are several wives and girlfriends too.

Just on the south side of lake Monroe off of 446
South of Bloomington and north of Bedford,
Once you turn off of 446 onto Fire Tower RD, I think it 4-6 miles down a gravel road to the Fire Tower parking lot

the hike in is around 2.5 miles i think and its fairly easy, there is a pretty good size hill that switchbacks all the way down going in, other than the going back out up the big hill is a little rough for me but im not in the best of shape so i just have to take my time and take a few breaks on the way up, or you can hike the rest of the loop on the way out , im not sure on the rest of the loop since ive never hiked the whole thing but would like too this time around. hope you can make it, let me know if i should add you to the list

Thank you as well my friend . I believe the modern volunteer services deserve much more credit . Basically back then you had two choices ... Become Canoodian or report to the draft board .
One thing once we did our tour there was none of this " Hey I see you made it ... now time for another tour ."

I point out my background mainly to show that even tho I am a total newbie to hanging I won't embarass you guys in the woods ( at least I hope not )

Real easy hike RiverJoe, flat smallish hike to the hill,,hill with 6 or so switch backs, and maybe elevation of 300' and then flat walk thru valley to the left turn into another valley,,,might get feet wet if the creek has lots of water in it,,however,,if you go about 75 ft either way, you should be able to find a crossing without getting wet if its up. Going back out,,you have the 6 or so switch backs but you can stop as much as you need to going out. I smoke and never stopped going out and averaged about 2.6 mph but the hill will get to you a bit on the breathing and I am same age as you with same background as Viet Vet myself. Quick question guys . I was looking in my Delorme map book for fire tower road south of Lake Monroe . All I find is Tower Ridge rd . heading east off of 446 . Is this the same road ?

Going to be camping at McCormick Creek this weekend and thought I might check out the sight if possible . Leaving in about an hour so hopefully somebody will read this soon .

Cart, probably not. But there is a parking lot real close that you can hike in extras. But it's up a giant hill.

You Ohio folk might consider them small trickles that join together to make a biggish trickle..

Carts and wheels not allowed in Chas Deam Wilderness, except, bikes on bike trails. Not ever 2 wheeled deer carts can be used by hunters. I have seen hikers use them,,but wouldn't want to get caught. Right now streams/rivlets,,are very dry,,we have had no rain for past 3 weeks,,and they are only predicting about a 1/3 inch in the next 2 weeks. But it will rain,,that stream is mostly only about 1/2 foot deep in most spots and about 6-8' wide when running,,it does have a few deep spots but still wadable/crossable anywhere if you want to get wet from the knees down when full to its max. We should get rain to have it running a bit by the time of the hang.

I avoid the Peninsula in warmer months. I don't think it will be very busy the weekend we are talking about. Last time I went to the peninsula, I kept heading south on the west side of it looking for an open campsite. After passing Patton Cave, I made do with just some level ground I found. It could still be pretty busy, but I doubt it. It's a crap shoot.

the nice thing about the spot weve already got picked out is that not very many people know about it, and its off trail a little ways, i doubt water will be an issue but i could be wrong, i imagine there will be a few of us go out and do a pre halloween hang as it gets closer to the date just to check the conditions of the site

Its about a 300' to 400' steep hill that cuts the distance to the valley by a 1/3 at least.

If you are in good shape it is easy.

To take this route you either need a GPS with good coords,or be familiar with this route,or
Follow someone in. At the top if the hill there is a 5 to 6 car small
Parking area.

It takes less than 15 min from this spot.

It's usually a pretty laid back group hang, no schedule of events or anything, some guys hike back to the parking lot on Saturday and take gear back to their cars that they thought they needed but don't or to restock refreshments, or there is plenty of trail in the area to do a day hike, or just hang around the Valley and enjoy doing nothing but laying around in the hammock, and there is usually plenty DIY talk if your into that as well, usually N abundance of knowledge in many different areas.

True, there are always those best of people that pitch in gathering firewood, new or not. That won't be a problem. What I like about large hang gatherings is that the fire becomes the meeting place, I can still picture Trail Medic and Acer and a dozen others who stayed close to the fire ring, me too. It's impossible to get around and visit with everyone as much as I'd like to, but the fire brings us together and even if you don't find yourself participating in every conversation, you can be a part of it by listening. I wish there was time for everyone to spend all the time they wanted with all those there but it's not possible. So I found myself getting to know others without even being directly involved in all the conversations. Then when just a few of us get to go on other trips we do feel we know each other already. Pretty cool if you think about it.

On the food front, I think we should have some sort of group type meal. Something to avoid mule and his crew carrying the load like at the HH. While I greatly appreciated the food and effort. I feel like it would be best if we planned and spread things out over a broader group of volunteers for this one. Thoughts?

Yes, I pick a little. I have brought it to a few outings but never played it more than 5 minutes. I even made a 2 lb banjo just for backpacking, but folks really don't want to hear a lone instrument out there. Same with my harmonica, its a waste to carry it.

I've played tough rooms before.

One place the waitresses use to put the chairs up on the tables at the start of the third set.

But 5 minutes? I have songs longer than that :shades:

I hear you though, and can respect that train of thought.

Some probably look on it the same as dragging a boom box out into where it shouldn't be. With the banjo and dulcimer making the trip westward via the overland trail, both have well shared time around the fire rings of the past, and surely wouldn't hold it against anyone sharing that perception in the present.

Not a lock yet, but closing in on this one. Have the go ahead, just need to fit all the pieces into place. I just love to watch those wheels go round n round :tonguesmilie:

I know those regs are "For the good of all" and cover all of the INF wilderness areas, except for the MU's and Nebo, which is slowly becoming just another MU. Enforcement of dirt bikes, four wheelers, and horse traffic, in unauthorized areas, is so remiss, and from a LEO point of view, too time consuming to catch and apprehend in the act. I can't imagine a group of LNTs making even a blip on that radar.

As long as everyone acts and hikes in a reasonable and responsible, state of mind and manner, there is little chance for enforcement, outside of the tower parking lot.

Still. Makes me long for the henge :sneaky:

As of right now, I am planning to come out Friday night through Sunday morning, along with 2 buddies.

If I understand correctly, the campsite is along the same fire trail that goes to the cemetery, but take a left at the first "Y", instead of continuing straight to the cemetery, and it will lead me straight to camp. Is that correct?

Looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and spending some time in the woods. Hopefully the weather holds as it was a bit wet last year for my tastes.

No, not correct. Take the first RIGHT from the two track going East on the Sycamore Branch, walk a mile and a half or so on that trail till you get to the campsite 2 marker then bushwhack generally North following the Creek/creeks crossing them several times to stay going N or NNE. There is a vague trail, lets keep it vague if we can. It takes about 15 minutes bushwhacking North to the Clearing.

The extended forecast is for 8o's for the days and 50's at night. Hope they're wrong!

Really. That is way too warm for the last of October. Even the Farmer's Almanac is calling for that. Average mean temp for the month of nearly 60. Mebbe even light rain.

Net and summer quilts :glare:

I hope they are wrong too. Though last year started out the same way but as it got closer forecast temps dropped to 50's by day and high 30's at night. which was spot on. I've been reminiscing about the 1st couple years that got in in the low 30's at night. Now that's camping in October!!!

Either way I'll just be happy to get out into the woods! hopefully I'll be testing out my new Thunderbird from Mr. Smurf.

Maybe I'm the weird one here but highs in the 80's and lows in the 50's sounds great to me for October

I'm not a big fan of the cold though, maybe one of these days when I can afford some down quilts I'll like it a little more

When you hang,,throw a poncho liner, or a fleece lightweight blanket of some type over your RL and use it for a sock type top cover..it will capture some heat and keep you somewhat warm..anything will work to some extent,,if you have a extra hammock,,hang it under your setup of the hammock/quilt your sleeping in,,for a UQP as basically that what it is,,it will give you a few more degrees of wamth..just a couple of comments that do work in the cold. Your Jarbidge UQ should give you nice warmth to 30 or so without any problems if you have it hung right. I have 3 myself that me and the wife use.

I was of the same mind, until I got me some downy goodness. Now I love winter. I DIY-ed alot but eventually just saved up to buy the stuff I couldn't make. Totally worth it, ALL HAIL THE DEAD GOOSE!!!

I had actually been thinking about using a extra hammock under my UQ but the poncho liner over the RL is a good idea as well
