Just wanted to share something I came up with (although I am sure there is someone who has done something similar). I have always been of the thought of using knots for putting up my tarps, which work fine when you are using 3/16" and up sized lines... the plan does not work so well with the smaller diameter, light-weight lines that we all like to use. I even messed around with using line-loks, but the amsteel line is just a tad too small under load. What I show here, I have seen done with purchased aluminum or titanium components (there is nothing wrong with doing it that way...please do support our cottage industries!!) I just didn't have the time to order and get the parts in, plus I wanted to try this out to see how it works... it works well!

You start with pony beads and your toggles. (If you have little girls in the house, you probably already have some of these around underfoot...)
(you don't NEED the pony beads, but they help keep everything aligned.)

I use pony beads for a lot of things with my hammock equipment. They work well to replace cord-locks with a light-weight (come on, really... how much do cord-locks weigh!!!) ability to help cinch things down... like stuff sacks, fronkey style bug net ends, etc, etc...

As you see in the next photo, I attach a loop of cord through the tarp tie-out (with a pony bead) with a double overhand knot as shown. The ridge-line goes through the center of the bead and I then attach the toggle on the end of the line. You can use a bowline/girth hitch (as I show), overhand loop knot with girth hitch, clove hitch with 2 half-hitches, etc....

Here it is in use...

You run the working end of the line (opposite the anchored end) through the loop and pony bead like for the first end, then around the tree. On this end of the line coming back to your tarp, add your toggle up near the tree. In the photo, I used a clove hitch (which makes the toggle perpendicular to the line). You can use a girth hitch to attach it by making a bight in the working end of your line and looping it over like you do for a gathered end hammock, but the toggle will come out parallel to the line. Either way will work fine.

Run your working end of the line through the loop and back to the toggle to give yourself a mechanical advantage.

When you get to the toggle, use a boaters cleat hitch to secure it. Once around the base of the toggle, up across and under the top end of the toggle, back down, across and under the other end, then 2 locking wraps on both ends to finish off. (See http://www.animatedknots.com/cleatvert/ for an animation)

Attaching your tarp this way gives you the ability to center your tarp after you put it up because of the figure 8 path your ridge-line takes.

Well, thanks for your time in reading this long post!! I really enjoy working with my hammock and set-up to see what works best for me. Hopefully someone will get some use out of this!!

Have a great week and HYOH!!!
