MacEntyre & I rode up & camped not far from the gravel road Fri, then hiked down to the Linville River after breakfast.

There were 3 guys in the first camp site just south of the Conley Cove/Linville Gorge Trail (LGT) intersection, & about 6 guys in the second.
The second group were spending a few days fishing there, but I don't think they caught but about 4 fish.

About a five minute walk south of there, we came to a large, flat, campsite that I had seen on another trip.
It has room for about as many hammocks as you could want.... more hammockers than are really supposed to be in one group in the gorge.
You can see plenty pictures in the web album linked in the first post of this thread.

We had occasional, light rain, but no big deal. Most of it was while we had the tarps up, & the temps were great. I believe MacEntyre recorded the low temps to be in the mid 50s.

Hopefully all will go well w/ the fall trip to Linville that Shug talked about in the earlier thread. This might not be a bad spot!

You've also got in your list this video (http://picasaweb.google.com/slowhike/LinvilleGorgeMay09#5331755991126780482), next to the last item in the second row.

It's my favorite!

That was a great trip guys. I forgot to pack a camera, but have some great mental images that will stay with me. It was nice to meet you both, and the fellowship was superb. We'll have to do it again.

 Yeah it's a good video ... but seems there should have been an unicycle in there shouldn't there? I'm just saying .... what would Shug have done?

...what would Shug have done?
He would have been more dramatic about Slowhike being lost in the gorge, with impersonations from Deliverance!

My mistake was trying to make it believable... just plain bad acting!

Here's the map. "CampCon" is the campsite. "WaterCon" is the water source we used. We actually parked at the ConleyOld waypoint which is the old Conley Cove parking area.

I forgot to mention that we could have left most of our food at home.
We did pretty well just "living off the land'... "eating what we found right there in the wilderness!!!"

MacEntyre

Yeah, we could have "gorged" ourselves with what we were able to procure on our own. It's a real land of plenty!

What was on the menu?

Shug

Toads and sassafras?
I am happy to hear a fine TR! The Linville Gorge is a wonderful place.
Thanks,
Shug

We collected so much that we had to make a cache and leave half of it behind.

There were even things that we chose not to take, because we preferred what we had at that point.

Van Camp Pork & Beans?

Well... yeah:confused:... we found a can of peas, a can of carrots, & a can of corn too!!!
We ate the pork & beans & the corn, but left the other two for the next guy<G>.

We also found a couple of cases of beer in a stream, but we figured they belonged to the fishermen camped nearby.

Me and two buddies hiked down Pinch In Trail and hauled in a BBQ Pork Butt and kept it in the river to keep it cool. We ate off that for 3 days .. with no vomiting on the 3rd day!
This was in the early 1990's before going lightweight..... We used to bring bottles of liquor too in those days but all of us being former Scouts we always packed out our trash!!!
Shug ..former pack mule

Shug, you didn't happen to leave a half bottle of Irish Whiskey in the little eyebrow cave under Razor's Edge Point did you?

Shug
05-09-2009, 09:42
Believe me .... we never left anything in the bottles. They were empty long before we packed 'em out. The first two days or daze in were big parties.!
Still my fave trip was hiking the length of the Gorge in 1996 ....

Slowhike, I have your umbrella... we left it in my truck when we unloaded your stuff.

Anyone else use a backpacking umbrella? I kinda like it!

Ahhh... thanks. I'll get w/ you on that.
One of the very best times I had using an umbrella was when it was to warm to wear a jacket, but going to be to cold when we got to camp to be soaking wet.
It's kinda like hiking under a porch<G>!
I'll bet if you search it, you'll find some past talk about using umbrellas here on HF.
