Weather permitting, Dan (Tinkr) and I are planning on breaking in 2014 with a overnight hang at 501 shelter. The 501 shelter is located north of Bethel on the AT. It is a quick 100 yard hike in and we have a great spot for camping. All are welcome.

Some logistics:

Getting there:

I-78 to exit 13 (Bethel). Take 501 North - go maybe 4 or 5 miles to the top of the mountain and there's a small parking area on the right side of the road.At the north end of the parking lot is a driveway, twenty yards up the driveway is a sign that says Private Drive, turn left on the blue blazed trail. Fifty yards and you will see the shelter. Turn left again and there are three camp sites on the right. We usually take the middle one but it is hard to fit everyone in there so plan on spreading out. There are a lot of dead trees around so pick spots carefully.

Misc:

We eat meat at these, it's not mandatory but you don't want to be the guy with ramen when everyone has angus prime.

Because the parking lot is close, don't be afraid to bring extra gear to keep warm, it can be windy on the top of the mountain.

Firewood is always needed.

A camp chair is always nice.

Pizza can be delivered to the parking lot.

Started putting my gear away from the past weekends overnighter at 501
when I got a thought, 0* tonight. Hm why not.
Its 6pm its already 15* and 30 mph winds I setup my rig, Hammock,0*quilt and Wb. sock together inside the house then carried everything out into the woods, no tarp. Its was the fastest setup time I ever had.Top Quilts I used 20* LLbean Pimaloft SB and a Walmart Dwn SB I added 2 ounces of dwn cut up into a TQ.
Went inside watched the football game untill 10pm, boiled water for my water bottle.
I wore top and bottom Duorafold base layer, Fleece jacket, Walmart fleece pajama bottoms, wool socks, Fleece cap and a LLBean Primaloft nylon jacket.
After an hour I was so hot I took off the Bean jacket. Stayed toasty until 4am and nature called. That hurt. Got back in and stayed until 6am.
It was a low record for me with Temps at 0* with 40 mph winds. The wind rocked me all night I thought I was getting sea sick and at times the sock filled like a balloon. Normally I get a lot of condensation in the sock (18* with the zipper open at the top). Last night I was closed up tight and had no moisture.I suppose due to the high winds penetrating thru the sock it stayed dry.
It was a great experience only possible with the tips I pick up from all of you. I thank You.

The wind was a factor, mainly I wanted to see how much the sock would be an asset. I had to put my pack boots in the bottom of the sock because the wind was snapping the sock so bad. It was really worth the 65.00 $

That was great to hear Bill. It was definitely the night to test out your gear. I would love to ave tried that as well but the trees at the new house are spread too far apart. It looks like I will have to build a stand to hang out like this. I am glad that everything worked out good for you!

I was camping with Scouts in East Greenville, my daughter's crew joined the Troop for a wilderness survival weekend. It looks like you enjoyed the same weather we did.

Tell me more about those lights.

Here is a link for a sled similar to mine, might even be the same model.

I am thinking of getting one like this (http://www.amazon.com/Emsco-Heavy-Beast-Expedition-Misc/dp/B0002EH3MW/ref=pd_sim_sbs_sg_3) though.

I would love to do an overnight tonight, the temp is perfect, if I had some company and the rain let up, I'd be out there.

80% chance at 8pm. 70% chance at 9pm. Then clear from there. Check the weather for Pine Grove. It's right up the road.
