View Full Version : Spreader bars keep popping out

I sooo love the cavernous feeling with the spreader bars in place. Sooo annoying when one pops out.

mrcheviots thread encompasses too many mods, so I would like to stick to just this issue.

I think the main problem is that the width of the grosgrain ribbons at the end is too narrow but I'm reluctant to mess with replacing the ribbon.

One thing I thought was to:
stitch elastic cord to the end loop.
Then sew a simple hook to the cord and the "eye" to the next closest loop.

In addition to the added tautness, a thin elastic over the top of the bar will help to keep the bars down.

Comments! Better suggestions?

Wow that's awesome! It's funny how we all seem to over complicate things :)

It took me about 30 minutes to copy this when I first saw it a month or so ago - thanks fallkniven!

One change - I loop the pole end of the lash-it back thru itself the same as on the grosgrain end. Once that pulls tight around the end of the pole it stays put!

that's probably easier to remove the poles as well. May have to try that...

Am I missing something here? I thought the OP was asking about the spreader bars on his Switchback Hammock, not on a tarp...

It doesn't really say, and I'm not sure  In any event, the pole mod for the tarp is pretty neat :D

Yeah GH I think this one went sideways. Sandy I don't have a bridge hammock but I'm thinking a simple keeper loop would keep the spreader from popping out.

Oh, by the way GH sandykayak is a lovely lady.

Sandy I've not had any problem with my net spreader bars on my SwitchBack coming out. The end loops on mine are sewn so that they form a corner or pocket. The end of the spreader bar goes in that and holds it in place once tension is put on the bungee.

Sandy,

Keep in mind that the spreader bars should not be put thru the center loop, the center loop is for the net suspension shock cord only.

Mmm I do remember Darby saying this before. May sound dumb, but not sure right now which is the center loop.

I put the hammock net spreader bars thru two off-center grosgrain loops and then into the end sewn-closed pockets. What I have been doing is tying the grosgrain ribbons (which I believe are to tie the net up out of the way) in a bow hoping to keep the bar in place.

Is there a loop in addition to the loose ribbons?

The center loop is the one that the net suspension (shock cord) is tied to.

Don't have time to check right now, but I think I've come up with a solution.

First, stop tying the ribbons around the bars as this may be inhibiting the needed curve.

Second, I'm going to extend the length of the pocket. I'll hand stitch 3/8" grosgrain to the existing pocket and, of course, anchor this to the hammock. A deeper pocket should stop the bars from popping out.

Tx all.
