Using the Frogg Toggs Chilli Pad and spraying the hammock back area with water for some evaporative cooling. July 1st in MS, 11AM. 84* feels like 87*F per weather report. I was very comfortable and cool for the 1/2 hour test period.

I have been using a Frogg Toggs Chilli Pad for hiking during the scorching MS summer, as well as working in the yard and lounging in the back yard. I have decided they are a significant help. I hiked 2.6 miles through the woods yesterday, and it was a good bit less unpleasant temp wise than when I did the same a few days ago without the pads. I did not sweat near as much and my face did not feel on fire in the fashion that precedes heat stroke. I also did not need to drink as much water. So these are proving a help with all summer time outdoor situations, for me so far. No doubt this could be simulated with a towel or something else, but I don't know if everything would work as well.

While I was laying comfortably in my hammock, something I can normally never do this time of year in the daytime, I experimented with other options for using. Normally, I just drape it around my neck where it catches the large amount of blood flow through the Carotid arteries. It is amazing how cool, even cold, this thing will remain for long periods of time. But while in the hammock, I also draped it over my abdomen for a major cooling sensation. I was pretty comfortable, but my grandson was walking by with a water spray thingy. I had him spray the outside of the hammock where it contacted my back and kidneys. Man, I was way cool, with my back and abdomen sometimes actually feeling cold. Especially with any small breeze. Now this wasn't way up in the 90s yet, but it wasn't at night either. And higher humidity might decrease the cooling ability.

But going by initial results, I am going to keep using the Chill Pad on top and wetting the bottom of the hammock if needed! If I can add some type of fan, I might actually need a TQ/UQ in the MS summer!

Whatever happened to those 'shoulder pads' (they looked like football shoulder pads) that were supposed to keep you cool. Somebody posted about a year or so ago. Anybody know?

I know what you mean Cannibal. We need somebody to figure out how to make the Hammock Forums version of those... :)

BillyBob,

If you like that, check out the "Chillow" www.chillow.com. Kind of the same thing, but a pillow. I was looking online for a way to cool off my dogs and came across it. I didn't buy it. You just jogged my memory from this post.

We could put them on and go around 'tackling' tents.:lol::lol:

Couldn't help what? Did I miss something?

But whatever I missed, it's good to know I "could be the 'poster-boy' for all things good about hammocks!" ! Good to have some purpose! I bet you remember what southern summer camping is like!

There was an image there before, one of those "motivation" pictures with you chillin and grinnin in your hammock. Must have gotten zapped. :)

OK, don't know what that was, other than the two images there now. Of me grinnin and chillin ( literally, with Chill Pads :D ) in my hammock. Or, one of my hammocks anyway!

I don't even know what these cost- it was a Father's Day gift.

I didn't have it set to "public" in Picassa. It showed-up as soon as I changed it.

Oh man - I'm now officially old enough to see evaporative water cooled air conditioning re-invented.

I'm so old that I remember ice delivery for real "ice boxes" (not these modern pretenders  )and evaporative water coolers on the tops of houses - very early air conditioners.

Now, I have to wonder if I'm going to live long enough to see hammock air conditioners using the modern gases instead of water.

What's old is new. Just wish I had thought of doing this.

Congratulations BillyBob58.

Thank you. Patent for hammock cooling techniques/devices pending. ;) (And I remember my evaporative cooler in Phoenix AZ in 1970, poor mans air conditioner. But it flat out worked, in a house trailer no less)

But seriously, these things do stay very cool for a very long time. I can't quite figure that one out, what is different. My soaking wet(usually from sweat) cotton tee shirt and shorts do not feel any where near that cool, not even close. After hiking for an hour, I can put that Chilli Pad against my face and it feels down right cold.

How many feet long is that hammock stand in the picture?

Well you asked so here it is and I have used these a couple of times some of the construction company's I work for have these for when it's real hot.

They absolutely work

I have not been able to find the adult ones but you have an idea

You can get something very similar to the Chilli Pad in the automotive section of lots of stores--they're called something like The Absorber and come in a capped plastic tube to keep them moist. Basically the same stuff.

158"( 13'2") by my measurements. 147" according to http://www.byerofmaine.com/amaz-acces_vario.htm .

Don't know what the dif. But this stand does flex a lot when loaded, and their specs might be based on the measurements once you get in. I force a bit of flex by tightening pretty good before I get in, then it flexes a bit more once I'm in.

I have an extender bar that adds about 3 feet. I'm not using it in those pics.

Those look even better! But a lot more expensive, about $70 vs $14. Might be worth it though, if they cool even better.

I've been thinking, for some time, about soaking a hammock and a top sheet in water before bed in an attempt to stay cool during summer nights in AZ. I'm also thinking if you could set up your tarp with the doors into the wind it would channel the breeze down the length of your hammock. Part of me thinks you would freeze for the first part of the night and then sweat the last part. Probably something I will try this summer as night temps dont drop below 90. I brought it up here if people want to read about it. http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=7972

Hmmm... I don't think I'd like sleeping in a wet hammock, even in the heat. As for the tarp, Just Jeff has a great page about site selection and tarp pitch (http://www.tothewoods.net/HammockCampingWarm.html#Sites) on his site.

Take a spray bottle, fill it with ice water, set the sprayer to mist and spray yourself when needed. It works! I bet with that fancy towel and a spray bottle you could stay cool anywhere, plus you wont have a wet hammock.
