Yeti On the AT

Just curious as to what you guys think about a 2/3 or 3/4 quilt for thru'ing the AT. I am drawn to the yeti for the great weight savings (think its like 11-12oz). I figure with a pad, and a pair or two of socks would be enough. I would be hiking in the spring. What do you guys think?

I think it's a great idea. I like the idea of having a half-length pad on the trail as a sit pad, and just in case you want to shelter or something. But I haven't thru'd yet.

cannibal used a 3/4 length uq on his thru attempt, maybe he'll chime in.

you should be able to stay just as warm with a 3/4 length uq + seperate lower leg insulation as you could with a full length quilt. now if you went 3/4 length with nothing under the legs in cooler weather, then you might have cold legs, but you can insulate them fully with sit pad, pack, extra clothes ect.

i did a quick overnighter last night and just put a normal sized sit pad (1/4"x15"x18") in the footbox of my topquilt and put a stuffsac under my knees and was fine. it was probably low 40's (forgot my thermometer). i might like a slightly longer leg pad closer to freezing but i'm a pretty cold sleeper. the one i used weighed 1.25oz

I think you would be good to go .... small pad and a Yeti = warmth and comfort!

No problems at all! I'll do it again on my next AT hike.

I did not carry a large pad, in fact at times I didn't carry any pad. This becomes an issue if you choose to stay at some hostels (like The Place in Damascus) that do not have any padding on their bunks. Worst part is, they got a donation out of me before I saw the bunks.

I used one on my little 200 mile section from Hot Springs to Damascus and it worked great. I stayed at "The Place" for two nights and I did not have a pad. The first night I got ...um lucky, I guess you can call it that. Someone had left an old pad in the hiker box. Worst night sleep in a long time! The second night I wised up. I do not recommend this as a solution for everyone at this hostel...it just worked out for me.
