I'm leaving for a 4 day hike in a few hours.

You don't list a spare pair of shorts or shirt. Maybe if it rains you'll want dry clothes to sleep in. Otherwise, it looks fine.

Enjoy your walk!

What do you plan on eating?

Never mind I just saw what you wrote about food

I'm going to use your list as a checklist for my own trip this weekend. It lists some things I would likely forget. Such as firemakers (I'll probably take a small bic) and small odds and ends like that. Thanks for the timely list.

Just FYI. I use this as a guide. I dont take half of this stuff but it helps me remember the essentials when packing.

I just got back from the PA->WV hike (40mi). Turns out the I packed all the right stuff for this trip. The only two items that I did not use the entire time were the head bugnet and the thermal bottoms.

I did get a chance to weigh the pack with all the above items before my trip...

21.5 lbs with no food or water
29.3 lbs with 2 liters of water & 4 days food

That's a good weight for a 4 day trip, IMO. Surely you could go lower, but if your pack is comfortable TO YOU at that weight, what does it matter? Personally, 20-25 lbs is my target weight for most trips...anything below that doesn't really make my trip any better. Around 30 lbs my pack straps start to get a little uncomfortable.

Pics from your trip?

My summer pack, Osprey Kestrel 48 (size large/2800cu.in.), is only comfortable up to 30lbs. Just like you, the straps get a little uncomfortable if I get above that. As long as I keep the weight in the 20's, the pack never gets uncomfortable throughout the day. I def. could get a lot lighter but I just don't have the cash :(

I do have lots of pics but I'm still in MD at my Grandma's and I don't have the cable I need to transfer the pics from camera to computer. When I get back home to PA tonight, I'll post a full trip report with pics...

I just saw the post. I would have added a first aid kit, signal mirror, and a gun.

I have to ask. Why would you ever want to carry a gun?

The gun debate is outside the scope of a gear-review for a trip that happened long ago. Maybe you can start a new Member's Section thread about it?

I personally would not, although there are a numer of member that do in fact carry when they can. I do believe there is a couple of treads going right now as to what people are carrying. I had nothing real to add, I was just being a smart aleck.
