Hey folks, looking to get a better sense of which weekend would work best for everyone. I have already heard that October is better than September. So working under that guideline I personally am looking at the weekend of the 17th OR the weekend of the 24th. Let me know which one works best for you. I am still working where the location is, so stay tuned for that.

Once we have the date settled we will start the actual planning of the weekend. If you have any suggestions for what you would like to see throughout the weekend you can PM me or post it here.

Looking for to hanging with you guys and gals

Seeing as the Fall MAHHA is 10/10-10/12, 10/24 would get my vote. Back to back weekend outings could put a lot of guys in the doghouse. Not that that would stop me from going. ;)

Bring it to Vermont! :)

===> Well, we did have a good time at Grout Pond there! Plus, it is near the terminus of the Long Trail, AND close to the AT, for folks wanting a day hike.

The color change in October, in either VT or NH, is spectacular. I made a jump last October at Orange, and at altitude (13,500 ft) I could see the actual color line as it moved south in VT. In Freefall, it was absolutely stunning - like jumping into a painting!

I vote an alternate weekend to MAHHA as well! Would love to make both!

October 11th is the only weekend I'm not available but the 24th would work better. Where ever we have it I think we need to make sure it can handle the numbers we get now.

+1 on what Perrito said. I will vote for the 10/24. Not only dog house, but two four day work weeks in a row is harder to swing.

Google has it as 2 hrs 51 min from Chesterfield to Alexandria. It's 4 hrs 30 min from my town just north of nyc.

That makes it about 2 hrs further for me. Do-able but I will probably add on an extra day or two for that kind of travel.

I might bring a canoe for a pre-paddle hang if this is where we decide to do it. :) I would be happy at the site we used last year for the fall hang. That was a great site as well IMHO.

I just made it out to my first unofficial hang this last weekend and would love to make it to a real one. I am currently free on either weekend, but I would lean more towards the 24th. I work as a freelancer so my free time shifts rather quickly so it might be a moot point.

People would be welcome to come early or stay late at our location, but same as last time, amenities are pretty much non existent. The bridge and road are in good shape and we have plenty of parking area now. It is about 80 minutes from the NH border on 93, so not so far up here.

I was talking about the one at Cindy's place in N.H. Isn't that what this thread is about? Oh and I'm well aware of the planning of the other hangs, and Not trying to discredit all the hard work everyone has done. I've hosted a couple of M/C events in the past, it's a lot of work.

Nighthauk
07-08-2014, 12:44

So, you guys had 2 pumpkin hangs last year? The one at Cindy's place was my 1st Hammock forum event. That's why I was like "what planning" I think it was "how much bacon should I bring?" and "who's bringing the donuts?" Oh by the way, I wonder if Chaz is gonna do the donuts again? Just in case nobody wants to commit to taking on the full planning of this event, I think we should try to cover the basics here, in the thread, as a group.

just a couple of thoughts in no particular order . . . .

I think the only thing that we would really need someone to take charge of, if we were to have one, is the charity raffle. I would imagine that it requires a LOT of emailing, phone calling, pleading, following up and coordinating. Many, many thanks to those who have handled this in the past, if you're willing to do it again then feel free to step up. or we could just do a 50/50 raffle

Food:
Pot luck meals on Saturday (all-day) have been the norm at both the official and unofficial hangs I have been to. I think putting what you plan to bring with you on the signup sheet has worked out good so far. The rest of the weekend its up to you.

Community kitchen gear:
I have not been to a hang yet where this has been in short supply! usually plenty of stoves grills and cast iron.
Just need to make sure someone is bringing an ez-up tent or good sized tarp.

Daytime activities
If you have a skill or craft you would like to teach or just show off, BRING IT! otherwise there is plenty of hiking or relaxing to do up there

Firewood
probably need to bring wood or tools to process this ourselves so as not to use up all their wood

BE ADVISED: This is much more of a camping experience than some of the other hangs we've had. When Cindy said that amenities are pretty much non existent, she meant it. you will be pooping in a plastic bag with some kitty litter in it, and throwing that in a trash bag which she hauls out. This could get problematic if we end with with the kind of numbers we've seen at other hangs since the last time we were at her place. Can't remember if there is running water or not, I brought my own.

very real chance of wild animal encounters, we saw plenty of moose sign and even had a pack of coyotes pass within 20 yards of where we were sleeping. A bear was shot on her property just weeks before we were there.

hope to see you there.

~Reason~
07-08-2014, 22:25
Hauling out the poo bag is no problem. People poo a lot less than you would imagine. It is an outhouse with a standard ceramic toilet , so much less intimidating that it sounds.

No running water except for a nice mountain stream so bring your own drinking water unless you plan to filter.

It is not handicap friendly, but if anyone has limitations, please contact me and we might be able to work something out.

===> Not exactly sure how to explain to folks location....last year we were instructed to follow certain roads, then look for signs that said, "Fresh Eggs ==>"

After finding a few of those, we drove around until we came to a warning sign that said, "Here Be Dragons!", and followed that when the real roads ended, until we spied a small hand-written note on a tiny chain deeeeeep in the dark and scary woods that beckoned us forth. Was worth the adventure though. We had donuts and Chili. 😊

My gps brought me to within a few hundred feet of her driveway. just be aware that if your using a smartphone for mapping and you lose your data signal your phone won't know what to do if it has to re-route, because it can't pull in any map data with no cell signal. I think there is an option to "make this map available offline" in google maps specifically for circumstances like this where your start point has coverage but your destination does not.

Eliot and I will handle the toilet trash. It really isn't a big problem. It's just a few trash bags we throw in the pickup truck and toss in the dump on the way home. In practice it ends up being maybe a pound per person per weekend, so maybe three 20 lb bags. It really isn't a problem for us at all and everyone who has visited so far and was worried about the situation said it turned out to be no problem. It is much much less gross than a pit toilet or portapotty. You never see or smell anyone else's poo.

OK, is that enough about poo?

SkyPainter
07-16-2014, 08:31
===> It is a piece of cake, brokentree! It's a TOILET - a real ceramic toilet with a lid like in your house, minus the water! It is in a prefab shed - total privacy! Instead of water there is a waste bag inside. You go in the bag, then put a scoop of kitty litter on top of it to absorb liquids and kill odors. Take the bag out, tie it up and drop it in a barrel just outside the door. Replace the bag for the next person. Brilliant solution in my opinion!

As for pee, well, there are 2,676,352 trees immediately nearby if you can't wait! Just be sure to go at least 50 yards back away from the beautiful stream the runs through the property!

No reason not to come!

The drive in is not bad at all as long as your on the correct road  There was a left at a farmhouse that could be confused for the correct road and that was the road that was not passable. We'll have to make sure we have signs at some of the turns this year.

sorry not trying to scare anyone about the doo doo situation. As far it goes it's better than most if not all public restrooms, I was just trying to give people a heads up that we won't have the lux setup like we had at the winter hang. Now the one pound per person per weekend may be a little conservative for this group. Have you seen how much we eat!!::laugh:

[email protected] hows the shoulder(s) are you going to be back in action by this hang?

Sky,

That's not TMI, that's FACT !

Those donuts are like natural binders. You could patent them and make a fortune. Sell them to the Circus to be fed to the Elephants just before the parade down Main Street. I think we're on to something...... :)

Look forward to seeing everyone there.

(John - hope the shoulder is coming along. We missed you at Harold Parker).

All the best !
Gil
Thanks for asking. I had both MRIs done and I'm just waiting for the Doc to get back from vacation. Then I'll know what he wants to do and when. I don't want to miss my fall TM so I'm being optimistic and signing up for this hang and still signed up for the TM in Jersey. Right now I'm back on the trail and training with Cortisone shots :D

===> Good to hear, John! Glad you're getting it taken care of! Be aware of cartilage and tendon "adhesions" if you have deep surgery. After my shoulder surgery for cancer, everything bound up for a while. A GREAT Physical Therapist finally figured out the problem, and used special techniques to release the adhesions which had grown. After the PT, I regained a lot of the range of motion! Not all, but a lot. If they suggest PT - do it religiously!

Hope to see you again at this hang!

There is a large open field just up at the end of the path to the site, right across from where we park, a perfect spot for your scope! Have one of the kids ride on the roof.

Hope to see you, Crystal, and the gang there! Could be about 15 kids there this time! Between Tim and I, we should end up making about 5 dozen donuts! 😨😛

You are asking about hiking in from the lodge? It is 1.6 miles, a gentle up and down, very easy, but the trail may be a little washed out from summer storms. There are two stream crossings with no bridges. You can usually, but not always do them without getting your feet wet. Take the back 80 loop to old dicey, that junction is where we park and you will see where to go from there.

If you are askng about driving from the lodge I think it is around ten minutes.

===> YUP! I wil cook anything we bring/catch while there! I just returned from an INTENSE (and intensive!) advanced training course at the Culinary Institute of America in NY, with their Master Chef Instructors on Techniques of Healthy Cooking, where we discussed (at my urging) preparing various types of wild game, from Elk to Snakes! It was an honor to be there, and to work with my highly-accomplished Chef classmates while going through this rigorous course!

The campus is visually and aesthetically stunning, and the facilities are the top in the world. Anything you might need in the course of preparing a dish or a meal is available, and we also had Culinary students as assistants to play Step-N-Fetchit if we needed the odd food or item.

While the others payed upward of $1000-$1500 to stay the week at local hotels and motels, I hung in my Warbonnet RidgeRunner in the local State Park for $113 for the entire week! HAMMOCKS SAVE YOU MONEY! With the money I saved, I was able to purchase a lot of higher-end cookbooks!

The logging road is in very good shape right now. That scary bridge has been repaired. Our friend's prius made it up there a couple weeks ago. (Not that I would have recomended that car to try it). Just think dirt road with a steep hill and some loose rocks. If you can do the first hill, you have it made.

Can we coordinate any of the knowledge sharing into some form of schedule, most likely for Saturday? I am bringing my nephew and I'd like to get him in front of as much "bush crafting" talent as possible.

We can probably just update the attached spreadsheet with any volunteers and times, although location might be an issue.

Is there a central location we can all congregate in?

===> There is a central gathering/eating place at the trailer on the site, the rest is virgin forest. Should be pretty easy to coordinate any sessions there. How old is your nephew? Can he handle a scary-sharp knife?

He's now 15 and I trust him with a knife, yes. He's no stranger to the outdoors and wants to one day live in Alaska.

===> Great! He'll be in the right place then! He should enjoy this hang! Hope he brings a teenage appetite - there will more food than you would imagine.

If he is truly interested, have him drop by our "sister" site - BushcraftUSA.com. Tons of knowledge and videos there, as well as free "Bushclass" classes, designed and taught by a USAF Arctic Survival Instructor. Sounds right up his alley! My name on that site is the same - SkyPainter.

Anyone have any experience with Tom Brown's tracker school? https://www.trackerschool.com
I've read one of his books, and will eventually attend his school for some standard skills. I really enjoyed his book.

Tom Brown (and Dave Canterbury) are very controversial figures in the Bushcraft community. Brown's version of being trained by "Grandfather", an old Indian, have never been able to be verified, and many disagree with his teachings. Canterbury, while possessing some real survival skills, has recently been castigated for inflating his military and other background, and for espousing some skills that many find as dangerous information. Bear Grills is regarded poorly, and a commercial sellout.

Do some research before you spend any money. Maybe get over on BushcraftUSA and read, then ask a few questions. Should be enlightening.

Ya, we have a small open area around the camper and a wide granite area just past this by the water. I think it will be large enough to handle everyone. If we want a bigger spot for something like a raffle, there is a large open area past the parking area. Nothing is super flat the way a commercial campground would be, but you can always use a shovel if you are dissatisfied :p

I may see if I can get some Goat meat for this hang. Just located a second supplier. Grilled, Roasted or Braised, it is a tender, tasty meat, and widely eaten across the world! Maybe a Goat Chili. Hafta see what's available at the time. Maybe Rabbits, too.

Drumlin Farm in Lincoln (Mass Audubon farm) used to a have a freezer with goat in it, although I havent been there in a while. Mina Halal in Quincy usually has goat too.

Okay, so, we are going to hold a raffle at this hang. None of the vendors have been contacted yet, but each of us (I am sure) has an item we can raffle off!

We have alternated the raffle proceeds between the Dan Farber Cancer Institute, ( who are keeping me alive!) and the University of Chicago Medical Center, which is doing great research in other diseases.

I propose that this hang's proceeds go to Dana Farber to the Jimmy a Fund, which helps kids with cancer, unless folks object.

My 21 yo daughter has been Dx'd with the BRCA1 mutation for Breast Cancer. My wife is a Breast Cancer Survivor, and I am dealing with advanced Prostate Cancer AND Soft Tissue Sarcoma, so this definitely is a selfish request.

Bring stuff. Anything you don't really use.

Sorry to hear about all that, Chaaaz. I will definitely keep you all in my prayers! Dana-Farber/The Jimmy Fund is definitely a worthy cause! I don't think anyone will argue with that. Most everyone has been touched by cancer in one way or another.

Everyone is welcome. (It is Alexandria, not Alexander though. A few people have made that mistake and their googles couldnt find it)

In case anyone wants to check it out, I will be up there this Saturday. Im trying to coordinate some bridge construction for the AMC trail that goes through our land, but not sure if the materials will be there in time for this Saturday. Regardless, I will be there and will happily show anyone around. Again, plenty of trees if you want to camp. Bonus points if you want to swing a hammer or move lumber around :)

===> Well, we will certainly miss you Tim and clan, and you, Bruce! Hopefully you can both make the Winter Hang! Luckily for me, my Cataract eye surgery was last week, and also my Oncology team has cleared me to attend the hang! Ain't easy being me! Psyched for the hang!

===> Well, yeah, I do have some aftermarket parts in me, LOL! I was hoping to get X-Ray vision with this second lens replacement, but no such luck. I do have other superpowers, though! [emoji1]

===> Scrapple is awesome! First time I had it was in South Philly. Immediately my memory got better, I could speak new languages, women threw themselves at me, and my complexion improved!

And then you woke up..... Haha! You're a character Chaaz

So in prep for this little adventure can anyone tell me how far it is from parked cars to camp area?
Asking because I have a large EZ-Up style canopy I can bring along for use in a common area, if that is something that would be helpful. It's fairly heavy though, so just wondering how far it would need to be lugged. If you guys feel this is unnecessary let me know and I will leave it at home.

Easy ups and walmart poly tarps might be a good idea for at least Friday night. It looks like rain Friday as of right now
