Anything happening out there? I have a free weekend (whaaaat?!?!) and I've been trying to rally up my friends but everyone seems busy.

Ratdog

Could be, better lock up the site now though.
I'll get online and look.

Weather should hold thru Sunday, temps will be nice, cool in the evening, a little cloudy during the day so it won't be too hot.

I might book a site for me and a friend, Pinebarrens.

You interested?

I want to Delaware Water Gap but don't think I can swing it this weekend.

There are some car camping spots left right now but they won't last.

Deadphans you want to reserve a car camping spot? Sounds like there are at least 4 others interested and I PM'd a couple other HF members.

Ratdog, thinking Batona?

Ratdog, thinking Batona?
That's one option, there are a couple other possibilities.

Really just waiting to hear what Deadphans was thinking.

If it's happening we should make a decision in the next hour or so for reservations and planning.

Ratdog, I can't go this weekend, but if you are ever going on the AT or to the Delaware Water Gap, I'm interested.

Ratdog
07-18-2014, 20:01
Yeah, I'll be doing the Gap sometime between now and September. Will post up well in advance.

Ratdog

Ok, it's been 4 hours since DP posted the original thread and apparently he isn't feeling it wrt my suggestion.

It's been great weather the last couple days and I think hanging by a campfire and sleeping outside sounds like a good idea. There are plenty of spots left in the Pine Barrens.

If anyone wants to hang, shoot me a PM.

Sorry about the delay folks! I got a surprise visit from my girlfriends parents and we ended up at the burlington county farm fair out in colombus. I am down for anything. Del gap, pine barrens.

It has been beautiful weather, and is supposed to hold like this through the weekend. Would love to get out there with you folks. Let me know if a site has already been reserved, or if you need me to reserve a site. I M still discovering the barrens and don't know the good hang spots yet. So if I need to grab a site some guidance would be appreciated, and most likely necessary to make sure we all have enough trees :)

Where we going?

Ratdog
07-18-2014, 22:18
The Farm Fair was slammed tonight, hope you had a good time.

Batona had a couple sites open but it's a little tight as far as campgrounds go. Sites 1,4 and 5 were available I think.

Mullica River is a great campground but a 30 min hike in at the very least.

My suggestion would be Brendan Byrne. It's wide open. The backside of the family section has loads of room and trees.

Someone has to goto Atsion Office to grab the permit, I can do that.
If the site I grab isn't to our liking, I can call back to the office and have them change it to whatever.

Ratdog

Where we going?

I know you can almost throw a rock from your place to Lebanon (brendan byrne) but I figure Batona is gonna be packed with kids. Goshen has a couple groups and I'm not doing Hawkins or Godfrey or Buttonwood.

Zilla

OK keep me posted, sounds good

Ratdog
07-18-2014, 22:33
I will throw some firewood in the truck.

All are welcome.
Bring your own food.

I will hit the office after breakfast and post the site info.

The entrance to Brendan Byrne is less than a mile from the 70/72 circle. (four mile circle) you can enter fro wither 70 or 72.

Follow the signs to Pakim Pond. When you reach the yurts, your are close. There are showers and water pumps.

Ratdog

Cost for this overnighter is $5/person. Cash or PayPal.

If you have to cancel for any reason, please let me know by 10:30AM.

I am going to start loading wood into the truck now and after breakfast drop by Atsion.

I have to head back home at that point to pack and work on a hammock order I received last night that is due tomorrow night. I'll probably be splicing stuff at camp.

I will be in the large loop sites 30's to 80's by 4pm. Feel free to get there at whatever time.

Deadphans
07-19-2014, 07:27
That sounds great. Thank you Ratdog. So when the site is obtained and a camper comes down to camp, one can go to the Atsion station and say I am with Ratdog here is my 5 bucks?

BTW, does anyone going have a ULA or a GG backpack? I have been debating buying one for a long time but always held up since I have yet to see one in person.

I will probably be there around 4ish as well, maybe a bit earlier.

Ratdog
07-19-2014, 07:33
Sorry, $5 is payable to me.

No need to go to Atsion, just go directly to Brendan Byrne.

Ratdog
07-19-2014, 07:36
No ULA or GG to share but I will be bringing The Dark Knight, a double layer 1.6/1.1 Argon hammock I just finished.

Almost forgot, PM me your Name and Vehicle Make, Color, Lic Plate #.

The Rangers like to know who is camping in the event of another rabid squirrel attack. :scared:

Ratdog
07-19-2014, 08:49
You can change the reservation with a phone call or at the Office if you like.

We will be a short walk from Pakim Pond. There is a nice pavillion at the pond.
The campsites at Brendan Byrne have picnic tables. (Not to mention bathrooms)

So I know all the state parks in general down in the pines have poor signage, is the entrance to this camp visible, or will I be driving by it a few times like the others, lol?

Ratdog
07-19-2014, 09:12
Pretty good signage on the highway, both 70 & 72.

Follow signs to Pakim Pond, continue past the pond to the large open area, camping loop is on the right, sites 30-82.

The Tree Frog

How many can your reservation accommodate?

What do you mean by 30-82? Which sites or sites are reserved?

Deadphans
07-19-2014, 09:56
Okay, actually I see where it is now on my aerial view.

Each site can handle 6, aircoder reserved a second site. Sites 31-82 appear to be unoccupied today. I will know more after I finish my bagel. Heading to the Atsion office in a few minutes.

Ratdog
07-19-2014, 10:46
Atsion does not handle Brendan Byrne State Forest. You have to go directly to Brendan Burns Park office. I am headed there now.

Ratdog

Site 39. Putting the tag on the site now. Then heading home to grab my stuff. Maryanne said we can change the site of we want. Just have to call her.

I won't be there for a couple hours or so. But the tag is on the site.

Wish I had checked the forums earlier. First time I've had a free weekend in months... Next time something gets together I'll show up, would really like get into hammock gear junkie over a campfire.

Deadphans , I have a GG Mariposa which I'll bring along next time. I can not say enough good things about this pack.

I've lived in NJ almost my entire life, never camped at Brendon Byrnes, ....one of these days.

If y'all do the Del. Gap up in my neck of the woods I'll be there no doubt.
-------------
on topic, what's the closest preferred hammock camping site to Barnegat? Supposed to go surfing there next swell, and would rather camp out night before rather than pay summer rates for a hotel room.

Deadphans

Thats not me!!!! ;)

Yekmar, that sounds great. I would love to check it out.
