View Full Version : It looks like I'll be Hamocking all the way
After a lot of deliberation between using a tarp/pad/bivy (again) or the Warbonnet for my second Long Trail End-to-End, I'm now strongly in favor of the hammock. Since I'll nave no pad, it will rule out using shelters this time... even in very bad weather. Until this hike, I've never used a hammock for more than a few hiking days at a time. With the Warbonnet I'm gaining so much comfort I feel that I just can't pass it up. I'm taking my single 1.7 instead of my double so that I can save the extra weight. Leaving August 10th and will try to drop a line or two as I progress from Quebec down Vermont's Green Mountain spine to Massachusetts.
Have a great time quoddy, be sure to take lotsa pics of your adventure.

Have a great hike Quoddy!
Oh, am I jealous! Will you be able to attend the Long Trail Festival in Rutland? It is sometime in mid-August. I was there last year and had a blast.

Hi... I briefly met you last year at the festival. In 2007 I missed it while on the LT and this year will be deep in the northern mountains while it is in progress. I'll just concentrate on the trail this year.

Quoddy, that's so cool. You seem to be the type of guy that doesn't want to carry any gear weight that truly does not carry its own weight on the trail. (if that makes sense, :) ) That says a lot for the BB. Have a great time!

Have fun, Quoddy! It sounds like a real adventure! How long will you be out there?

It's 280 miles from the access point to the exit point... 273 miles of official trail. With the difficulty in the northern half I plan to enjoy the hike and average 8 or 9 miles per day there and about 12 to 14 in the south. I discovered last night that family members have set up something very important in New Jersey right at my expected completion, which I must attend. Now I can't slow down, even if I wanted to, so it'll be between 25 and 28 days. Resupplies are set up a approximately 5 day intervals.
Knowing the difficulty in the north from the last northbound End to End, I'm trying to set up reasonable distances there on this southbound hike. Southbound it'll be a tough hike, particularly from day 6 through 14.
I got some LT envy!!!!!
Was just in Manchester, VT and got to day hike a bit on the LT/AT there. Very Vermonty!!!!
I wish you terrific trail times. Sleep sound in the piney woods.
Shug of the Trail Envy.
The first two resupply boxes were just sent on their way and I'm completely packed and ready to go. The Warbonnet BB, Yeti, and OES MacCat Deluxe are near the top of my pack since I might nap occasionally after lunch on 10+ hour hiking days. I probably won't post much to Trail Journals this time, but I will be sending occasional photos and brief comments to Facebook via my Blackberry as communication permits.

Are you taking end caps or undercovers or overcovers quoddy? I have a fear that spalshing rain would get on my hammock/uq during a hike, i also have a deluxe in spinn.

No reason to worry. I did the summer portion of my AT hike with a standard sized MacCat and my uq didn't get wet from below. Not even once. :shades:
I'll be hanging in the Vermont woods where there is abundant ground and tree cover. Little to no chance of any ground splash or even significant blowing rain. I've used the Deluxe in open and bare locations and haven't had a problem even there. If there ever was a problem, I could use my rain cape as extra protection, which I've done while ground dwelling with just a tarp in blowing conditions.
