The itinerary is set. Fly into SanFran on Saturday 8/9. Hang in Golden Gate National Rec Area Saturday night. We have reservations at Haypress Campground. Sunday and Monday night we have a house in Mendocino to stay at. Tuesday and Wednesday we will head up to Redwood NP. Tuesday we'll grab our backcountry permits and stay Tuesday night in either Nickel Creek Cam or DeMartin Camp. Wednesday we'll stay at either Redwood Creek or 44 Camp. Does anyone have experience staying at any of these campgrounds? Due to camping only being allowed at designated spots I've got us set up fro ground dwelling if necessary.

It's difficult to hang by the creek. But, it can be done. 44 Camp is great. Not many folks go up there. There are a couple bear boxes, outhouse and a picnic table. Plenty of trees as I recall. One piece of advise: have a plan B at the ready. It's pretty busy up there in the summer.

What would you recommend as a plan b? I thought the alternative campgrounds were a plan b since the permits sounded like first come first serve.

I was mostly referring to the campgrounds before you hit the trail. I'm not familiar with them. I went last year and it seemed that all the drive in campgrounds were full, up and down the coast. I was gonna hike in at prairie redwoods state park and all were full or down for maintenance. You'll probably be fine.

An alternate option further south is the Lost Coast Trail.

Get an early start. Hwy 1 in mid summer is SLOW

Thanks for the advice. We're adaptable, so we will make it work. I'll post a trip report when we get back.
