I finally completed version 2 of a bug bivy. This thing is huge, but that is what I wanted. It is 10'4" long. The side pieces are 36" high and the bottom piece is 30" wide after seams. It has a #5 zipper along the bottom edge. I have 2 zipper pulls on it. This way I can close the opening at any point along the edge. It is also a non-seperating zipper.

It is a little heavier than other options. It tips the scales at 12.6oz. I think I could have made it 3 or 4 oz lighter. I went with the #5 zipper since I am going to be using it a lot. I don't think the #3 is as durable. I could have also put the zipper along half the length. The full length though gives me the option of attaching the netting to the ridgeline with the zipper fully open. This way I can sleep without the netting without taking it off. I could have also saved 30% on the weight of the netting with nanoseeum. I think making one for 8oz with extra cost, smaller and shorter zipper, and less room would not be too difficult.

It is big enough that I can adjust the sag in my hammock without worrying about it. I can also sit in it like a lounger and be protected from the bugs.

When I am in the hammock and have am underquilt on it, there is about 8" underneath not used.

Thanks for the kind words. Onto the quilt project and a bug hammock sock for my dad to use on our canoe trip later this month.

Have you seen the ENO bivey and the campmor bivey? They have a zipper going up the middle of one side. Do you think that would help shave off a few oz? It looks really nice!

How difficult do you think it would be to accommodate side tie outs?

Not too hard. Just put a GGR loop on the inside and outside of the netting. I would put a square piece of netting on first to reinforce the area.

I saw that. My first one, pics in my gallery, has that option. The issue was I made the horizontal one too small. I went with this option to make a large opening. I think one vertical one with a long horizontal one would work.

Might be a slow connection stalling. Try right-clicking on the pic and choose "Show Picture". If that doesn't help, refresh the page.

Are you going to post some "how-to make one of these" directions?

Just saw that ENO has a bug bivy. Didn't realize any one made one of those.

I would be happy to help anyone or offer some tips. As to directions on this one, probibly not. This was one of those projects that turned out, but was a huge pain to get there. More of a fact that I need to stop cutting out the material in the middle of the night than anything else. But I am getting good at covering up my mistakes.

If I followed Just Jeff's hammock sock directions (loosely), except with noseeum, would I be going down the right track? Kinda sorta?

That is how I am going to be making one for my dad to use soon. If you use a drawstring, make sure to make the area in the drawstring is large. On one of mine it was only around .5-1". I am going to try something on the order of 2" on my quilt. I think it makes it easier to get a good closure.

Tim, I've actually wanted to put a few of your projects on my site but I've just been busy. I'm traveling now so I have a bit of time in the evenings sometimes...and HE's just popped up at the right time.

So I'm probably gonna update some of my pages while I'm up here...you're sure to show up on there (with permission for each pic, of course)! Esp. the insulated hammock and the end caps. How do you do your bug protection?

bug protection??? whats at?
i've been fortunate in the places i go that i've not had a lot of bug problems... mostly pesky gnats & flies, but i do plan to make something soon.
it's basically going to be the same as the travel pod i have planed.
i shared the zipper idea w/ BB & i believe he may be planing to use that lay out for the zippers too.
i'll have one long zipper from the foot end that ends/separates just above the head.
from that point where the long zipper separates above the head, there will be two short zippers (24"???) going strait down to just below the sides of the hammock, forming a tee.
either one, or both sides of the net can be attached to the ridge line. that way you can open one side to get in/out or to reach something.
or you can open both sides & store the net between the hammock & the under quilt.

i do wish i could get some of the newer, versions done (like the storage end covers). they would be easier to understand & duplicate.... & look better too!!

I hear that - I have so many drawings that I just haven't gotten around to prototyping, and a few beginnings of projects sewn but still sitting in the box.

A few page updates...
- Tim's End caps (http://www.tothewoods.net/HammockCampingDry.html#EndCaps) and a pic at the bottom of the Hammock Camping main page (http://www.tothewoods.net/HammockCamping.html)
- A link to the BlackCat DIY instructions (http://www.tothewoods.net/HammockCampingDry.html#DIY)

Thanks for the link, Jeff!

If you want a pic of trek poles used for tarp elevation (noticed you said something about that further down the page), check out my pix from Mt. Rogers. I used both poles to hold up one whole side of my BlackCat.
