I love the idea of 1 item with several uses, with that in mind what are some options for a rainfly that doubles as raingear? I was thinking of a rainfly/rainskirt combo or really any combination. I have seen the poncho/rainfly combo and question its durability as well as the head hole that would be over top of your hammock. Just curious as to all of the double duty options out there.
I've found G.I. ponchos to be very durable and you can wrap up the hood with the draw string to make them water tight. They're too small to use over a full sized hammock though. I do use one over my 3 year old's little hammock.
A few people on here have used the golite ponch with success. I have one but haven't used it as a tarp.
I was just at Uncle Sam's army/navy (50% off until the 2nd). The sell a Canadian Forces Bivy tarp in sections (zip together). Each section is 10'X5' - can't tell the weight, but they include the shipping because it is a "heavy item" made out of "Waterproof Nylon".
Any Canadian Hangers or ex-military know about these?
I'm not too concerned about weight (motocamper), but might be interested. They do ship with shock-corded poles, but wouldn't have to use them of course.
I was considering a similar setup until someone pointed out to me that if you're "wearing" your tarp, how do you hang your hammock in the rain? Same goes for accessing your pack to get at food, etc.
I use my poncho as an undercover to be able to get away with a tiny tarp. Without the undercover, sideways rain would hit the bottom of the hammock--making for a wet night. With the undercover, it runs off.
Total weight savings over my previous set up? 32 oz (this includes going from a PU-coated tarp and an heavy GI poncho to 1.4 oz/sq yd sil for both the poncho and tarp; equivalent materials would have saved ~13 oz).
