aww Jan is not lookin good for me but won't rule it out.
Working 2nd & 4th wknd, am at the MRHO 3rd wknd.
Got nothing planned Feb 1, 2, 3 & 15, 16, 17, so, , , , , :)
Would be nice to go close.
I have no objections to Feb, I might be able to make my TQ by then.
I'm looking forward to hanging with some fellow Buckeyes, but its the height of basketball season... so I'll have to pass. Spring is right around the corner though!
I would love to meet some fellow hammockers and hike and hang for a bit. I have an odd work schedule so it would depend on if I have a Saturday off. Keep me posted and I'll see if I can join, Jan or Feb!
Sorry CB, this is the first month in over a year that I haven't been out with the Ohio gang. Just got a full plate right now but will definately be up for something yet this winter.

Things are starting to finally calm down a bit with our new addition, although things are still hit or miss with availability for me.
I'd love to get out sometime in the very near future. I'll be watching the thread to see what ends up coming about on which weekend and will hopefully be able to make it.
Me too, Jan is too busy, work sucks. Please keep me in the loop, one reason I joined HF was to find fellow Ohio hangers out there.
No worries, we can plan something for February! I'd like to so zaleski or similar, open to suggestions tho.
January will probably be the first Ohio hang I CAN come to. I don't have much going on except the end of Jan. I'm willing to drive a bit, but don't really want to head clear across the state. My friend and I just spent last night at Nelson's Ledges Park in Parkman, Ohio. Very cool place, lots of great sites. There is some minimal hiking/exploring to do, but no serious trails. Either way I'm most likely in. I'd love to get out and finally meet some fellow Ohio hangers.
I'm in for something in mid to late Jan at Mohican if anyone is still interested.
Hey CB, I'm headed to Mt. Rogers like the Doc, but still would like to get a local hike in. I'll be watching the thread.....hoping....waiting....please! Anything to get me away from having to sit through another Dance Moms episode!
I'll post some potential dates in Jan soon and we can figure something out! :D
Last year we did one on the same weekend as the MRWH and got "better" weather than they did! 12f and 2 or 3 inches of snow. It was awesome.
I must say I'm getting a bit excited about possible trips/hikes in Jan. &/or Feb., since Winter weekends tend to be less complicated. Not sure if I'm going to hang or go to ground, but I do want to keep up on all the possible hikes, dates, etc., so I'm a definate maybe! I'll check in on the when & where, and it just might work out..
Okay, so here's my schedule I could do:
Jan 5,6,7 or Jan 10, 11 or Jan 15, 16 or Jan 21,22 or Jan 26, 27
Feb 1,2,3 or Feb 7,8 or Feb 11,12,13 or Feb 16, 17 or Feb 22,23,24 or Feb 26,27
I'd really like to get a several mile hike in to the camp site before setting up. Any one who is interested please post dates and a location. Thanks all!
I'll be watching the thread. January may be hard for me. I am almost to the point that I can test for my instrument rating (airplane) and that training is taking time from every weekend. If I'm available when others are, then I will come.
Zaleski would work very well for me if I am available. I have been planning on a trip there anyway in the midwinter.
I'll watch the thread, too. Could use time time out. :)
If you're thinking of Mohican, there is a nice little river walk worth considering. My plan to do it is to first go into the state forestry office and register at one of the park and pack sites then drive back out to the family campgrounds on state route 3, park there with the registration in your windshield and then hike along the north side of the river or take the moutain bike trail up to the park and pack sites. Taking the river trail would take a bit of navigation to estimate where to come up out of the gorge and bushwack up to the park and pack. Certainly easier now that the leaves are off.
I probably wouldn't have tried this until I got more familiar with the trails last Fall on a group hike. I found they sell a bit more detailed trial map at the camp store in the family camp grounds for a couple bucks that was much better detail than the pdf the state had on the web site.

That sounds like a cool plan Dave. It would be a nice change to the park and a 5 min walk in.
I'm in for Mohican the 26 and 27 of Jan. Who's with me?
Sounds like a plan to me!
Yeppie!! That would be great to do again, my Birthday is the 30th. I would certainly hope (having a procedure done on the 3rd) I'd be good to go by that time. I won't be doing the long walk in, but if you all let me know the site number, I'll figure it out from there, even if it's not the standard 8, 9, or 10.
...Oops, it will also depend on how my Mom is doing and if I'm still needed out at their place. She is having a couple of vertebrae fused on the 21st.
Dang, too many health issues in this family the past 2 years!!!
Site 9 would be nice but I'm open to whatever. I was thinking of day hiking down to the river. My wife and I tried it last November but had to turn around and head back to set up camp.
Bannerstone can you scan and post that "more detailed" map?
I have that map too.
I might be able to make it that weekend too.
I will do that, but my feeling is that one needs some familiarity with the landscape to know when to turn off path and bushwhacked up out of the gorge.
I felt I got pretty close by using google earth. I need an excuse to take a turn up that way soon anyway. :)

Following this post for an "official" site and date announcement... Looks like Mohican Jan 25 - 27?? The usual site 9?
Should start a new thread specific to the Jan trip? So CB may plan others?
Doesn't bother me to keep it here if you want to.
Once everyone decides whats going on, we usually just leave it on the same thread the discussion was started on, just correct dates and place on first post if able. If doing two January hangs, than two separate threads would be ideal, addressing each one.
So sounds like we are doing Mohican on January 26, 27 at campsite 9? If this is correct, I'll create a new thread.
So, do we like the idea of parking at the campground office and either hiking along the river, or the mtb trail to the campsite? I think this sounds like a lot of fun. Especially if there is snow, a shorter hike like that would be great.
Great Ohio hike planning resource for those not aware of it: http://backpackohio.com/index.html
I might be in for my first hang. A quick google shows site 9 is down by the river, is that right?
No, it's not by the river. Use the park and pack sites.

I am going to head there friday night the 25th and stay until sunday the 27th, barring any catastrophe. Looking forward to getting out there! See you all at site 9.
I'll watch this thread, but with Mt. Rogers the weekend priorit's not likely that I'll make this one. If anyone plans a trip for the second or third weekend in Feb let me know.
If my mom is doing OK, and we're able to make this one (fingers crossed); I think we'll head over to Snow Trails Saturday late afternoon to go tubing....if anyone is interested. Those of you with better knees may want to snowboard or ski. It's only like 20 minutes away.
I'll be there Friday night.
Anyone else interested in a potluck?
I'll be making something for the group that either tastes good frozen or can be warmed and re-warmed on the fire.
A group meal sounds good to me. What sort of food fits that bill? Soup or chili might do well.
So who if anyone is starting by the camp office and hiking in on Saturday? Just me and maybe my wife?
Wish I was closer I would
I'm thinking Friday night in on the river trail. CB200T, maybe I could leave a blaze on the trail to mark the turn off up out of the gorge to site #9.
I'm still looking for my maps from the camp store, I know I've bought at least 4 of those things, they'll turn up sooner or later.

Hello fellow Ohio hangers. I'm very interested in winter hanging and would love to get out and meet the community. I am pretty new to camping and hammock camping doubly so. Is there any site or thread that would be a good resource for a comprehensive, bare minimum gear list, needed for winter hanging? I have on order a jarhead uq, an eno tarp, WBBB (also on order), and woopie slings. I already have tree straps and have hammock camped twice previously. I'm planning on using a sleeping bag as a top quilt.
Hope to at least stop by and take notes. By the way, if there is anyone near me who wouldn't mind meeting up to talk winter gear and their setup I would be really appreciative.
I live in the greater cleveland area.
A hammock sock will add great warmth and the basic hammock sock and is super easy to sew yourself.....it's just a tube with draw cord ends. Can easily raise your micro climate 10 degrees.
Tarp that is big enough to close in the ends to help with heat.
Change of clothes so your able to go to bed in totally dry things, especially socks.
You'll want to dial in your UQ when you get it, and test at home first so you can work out the adjustments.
Basic musts: hat, gloves, something extra for your feet if you don't have down booties, something extra to stick under your butt like refectix, a bottle you can safely put hot water in to place against your femoral artery (also put the bottle in a sock or some kind of cover for extra protection).
