2nd Annual Oregon Winter Hang! Jan 18-20th

Last years Hang was amazing!
So going to start this up to give people time to plan and and prepare.

DATE: January 18-20th 2013 (revised)

We will be up on Mt Hood at Frog Lake again.

Snowshoes are recommended if you plan to do any day hiking/exploring.
In camp should get packed down fairly quickly and you shouldn't need them.
There should be a couple pairs of extra snowshoes around.
Cross country skis may work as well.

You should have winter gear good to at LEAST 20 degrees.
And something that can take you lower in case you need it.
Our scouting trip got to 22 degrees but its not unheard of to have
single digit temps. We will be close to the cars, there is no reason not to drag extra gear and clothing along.

You should wear good base layers and good winter clothing.
Jeans and cotton shirt wont cut it!
Waterproof boots are highly recommended and bring extra socks.
Wet frozen feet are not fun...

I plan to bring some nice dry firewood along with me so we can get a fire started without all the hassle.

For additional entertainment we are doing a White Elephant/Secret Santa/ or what ever you know it as gift exchange.
This is not really about getting stuff as much as its about fun.
It can be hammock related but doesn't have to be.
We should set a max you can spend. I don't care about a minimum.
Again FUN if it makes the group laugh its even better.
Hope more can make it this year!

Hmmmm... My presence will depend largely on how slow work get this winter.

Has anyone ever used iced up piles of snow as anchor points? It could work really well especially if we used a bunch of webbing over a large surface area... I could bring a couple shovels...

Hopefully there will be a Bigfoot sighting there this year :D

Whatever you try and do, don't use plastic bags. You can make snow stakes by cutting up a bucket or sink y stakes in sideways.

If anyone from out of state would like to join, I am more than willing to arrange pickup and drop off at your transportation of choice.

A Bigfoot sighting would be superb!!

Well you could always plan the eastern hang another weekend!

Since I can't submit time off requests yet any weekend will work. Once the time off opens though I can't be as flexible so as soon as we can lockit in the better

Well a extra week away from xmas is probably better that closer to.
Gives a bit more time from xmas vacations and bills to be able to attend.
So if 18th-20th works for most I would say that's the best choice.

Ok dates fixed. Back to planning.

DFabulous and I are good with that.
DFabulous says, "it's good it's not the weekend after that"
(whispering) it's someone's birthday end of January.

Depending on my work schedule I should be able to make the new dates...I'm out of town the original weekend, but should be back by then (and hopefully with some stories of a short backpack in the Grand Canyon!). I am a tentative "yes" at this point.

I think Drew and I (and possibly my wife) will make it if I can scrounge up enough gear.
Thanks to the bounty of the summer hang, I have enough hammocks. I'm also good on the rainfly front, I just need to work on TQs/UQs.
I think I'm going to gut some old army surplus down sleeping bags and try to make some DIY quilts.

Those army bags are usually just chicken feathers--not down. Hardly worth the bother.

Driving up to hood to look at some campgrounds. Will let ya know what I find:)

I made it to Clear Lake Campground and to Trillium Lake Campground.
Trillium I don't think will work and the hike in would be a little tough for some.

Clear Lake campground is FULL of perfect trees and is rather Large.
Was a bit windy down on the beach but up a little higher was really nice.
Its my top choice as of now, I would like to do an overnight trip up there soon so I can do the hike from the Skyline snow park and see how that is.

If you can hike/snowshoe it is. After a certain amount of snow hits the ground you can camp pretty much anywhere. I checked into that last year when we went to Frog Lake. You don't even need to be at a campground.

I may be interested - depends on which weekend you settle on and if I've enough low temp gear on hand.

The only problem with clear lake is parking its not a normal sno park so we may come out to nour vehicles covered in plowed snow.

What do you mean? You would be parking at Skyline Sno Park and hiking in similar to last years hang.
I think its bigger than Frog Lake's Sno Park.

Other options are still possible, but we are limited on areas that are plowed

Jan 18-20th is the weekend.
As long as a massive storm doesn't botch it up.. but that's the mountain so..

If this ends up being our location, about 1/2 mile to the lake then however far to where we set up camp.

Looks like a great spot. You should've planted a big stick in the ground next to a fire ring, though, so we can find it under the snow. ;-)

I'd like to make this event my first winter hang, if you all don't mind me joining you all. Lived in Alaska for 5 years, so I'm familiar with cold. Any winter gear that I might need I can rent from the local MWR for a nominal price. Would love to test out my HammockGear Winter 0 degree Incubator. I think I can get a skipulk from the MWR Center as well. I'd be able to help haul gear.

Gary and the rest, I will block off that weekend for another great hammocking adventure! Subject to having gear that will handle the cold. I am working on the hammock right now, not sure if I am going to buy it or make it. As for the rest well, there is always Christmas, Right!!

I have a new truck now, the Titan got killed on I5, so if someone would need a ride south, let me know.

I am not sure where in Alaska you lived, BUT, Oregon snow tends to be wet. We live/lived in Northern B.C. the snow was dry and very different than Oregon's "white-rain". I think snow in the Northwest is beautiful, I love it, however it is wet.

You might need different gear here vs whatever part of Alaska you lived in.
Our gear needs are very different here. As is the clothing we wear.

I think if you up high enough its still nice powder.. At least it was for me on several trips last year..
