On my way to the Smoked Butt Hang in NC I intend to spend a night in Monongahela National Forest in WV.
It looks to me that I can "wilderness" camp in the National Forest, as long as I adhere to the regular rules (Leave no trace, vehicles on the road/parking area, camp away from trails and streams, etc.).
Am I correct that this is allowed? Or do I need a camping permit or something first?
That's basically how it is in Michigan. I would do some searching on Google or call the USDA or whoever manages that specific area in NC to be sure.
Honestly, that's the ONLY way I camp. Dealing with permits, logistics, calling, paying, reserving...totally takes the fun out of it for me. No thanks.
yeah, any national forest you can practice dispersed camping outside of designated campsites. Usually have to be at least 100' off the trail and at least 100' away from any water source or something. You can't camp in any single spot more than 2 weeks.
However, some State Parks operate within National Forests so ensure, if you're in a state park portion of the national forest, you're adhering to those rules.
However, most Wilderness Areas are all National Forest.
Sure. A million possibilities. No permit necessary. What route will you take? MNF is somewhat west of a line from West Chester to Wake Forest, or are you coming from somewhere else? But West Virginia is worth the detour. If you want I'll meet you and show you some nice camping spots.

I laid out a "guideline" route for Thursday and Friday, but with all those fantastic motorcycle roads in WV, who knows where I'll end up by evening time.Quote:
