Advice needed! My first night in a hammock did not go so well.....

My wife has the Eno DN. She absolutely loves the thing. I can't lay in it more than thirty minutes without feeling discomfort on heels and knees. It will not get flat enough even using a structural ridgeline to ensure sag. It is too confining on the edges to allow for a flatter diagonal lay for me. On the other hand, a cheap Walmart hammock has been much better, but I still have to have a knee prop and a ridgeline to prevent heel irritation. If I get that cheap hammock set, it is lights out for me now. Took a bunch of trials to get to that level of comfort, but I did finally get there.

I also recently spent my first night in a hammock. I've hung and lounged around a couple previous occasions, but never a full night.

My night wasn't the best either and couldn't get properly diagonal. I figured I was strung up too tight. I tried too loosen, but my tarp complicated matters.

Ultimately, I didn't increase the sag enough. In the morning I readjusted before packing up and found a sweet spot.

So, definitely check your hang angle. I tried to fudge it and got punished with a poor night's sleep.

Read The Ultimate Hang. It's great and very informative. My first night wasn't all too great, but after a while it got a lot better with hang angle and lay angle, was great. I sleep on my stomach in a bed, but in a hammock, I've learned I can sleep on my back quite easily.

Also, ensure you are not using slap straps :)

Get a longer hammock. 10' or11". I am shorter than you and can not get that comfortable in ENO DN. Longer is much more comfy for me. Also i think it takes a few nights for some to figure out the best lay for them. Fiddle around with sag angles.

I was hanging from the rafters in my basement about 10-12 feet apart using the Atlas Straps. I was pretty close to the ground without scraping it. Ill have to find a different spot in order to get more sag.

Also. Compact, I have seen a few different hammocks at walmart which one are you referring to? I'm looking into setting up in my room with eyebolts etc..

Other things to consider is to hang your foot end higher by several inches. Depending on the height of your basement ceiling you may require your hammock supports to be 16 - 18 feet apart to get the desired 30 degree suspension angle.

I also didn't sleep much at all the first night. A bit better the second, but still not great. The third time was super comfy. Part of the reason was acclimation and part of the reason was finding how to get comfy. I can only speak for my experience, but to me, it seems like an art and a science to find how much an inch more or less sag, or an inch more or less diagonal matter. Agree with a pillow under knee at times.
Everyone pretty much said all this already. So I am just repeating. :)

Too short. Not wide enough. Yes you do want a SRL. Start at 83% of the hammock length.

I'm much shorter and it took going up to an 11'r. 60" wide. I might be able to get by with 10 or 10.5' and if I were going to do that perhaps 56" wide....but I'm not worried about fixing what I don't consider broke. :rolleyes:

The one I use is the "Equip" brand. Two tone blue. $24. Comes with a suspension, but I replaced that with whoopies, a ridgeline and huggers I bought from Squidbilly in the forum.
