bug net too hot...
hey all new to the forum been snooping around a bit. built myself a nice hammock and a bug net I stole from a guy on youtube using the window shades as but netting. my problem is this I live in FL, and its hot. tolerable at night without the bugnet but when I put the net on there is zero ventilation and it gets hot in the hammock. are all bugnets like this or is it just this one due to the small holes. I hate bugs more than anything but heat comes up a close second. Thanks a bunch for the info

I put a fan on the ridge line when I have this issue. Has worked so far.

Yeah bugnets can retain heat especially if it has very small holes. I don't know about what you used but maybe find somethiing with a bit bigger weave. I've seen some people use small hand sized battery operated fans in their hammocks just to get some airflow.

I use 200 mesh netting from Vermont Barre Army Navy, and treat it with permethrin. I've had no bug issues, and the ventilation is quite good.

Your choice...bug net and hot, bug net with fan or no bug net and feed the bugs

Re: bug net too hot...
I always use a fan in summer... I'm in south Texas and yes bugnets hold a little heat and stop a breeze... Buy a fan, just think of all the weight you save by not needing insulation :)

I made one out of tulle...lets the breeze in nicely here in guam, but still am getting a fan for next go round... I am not sure what those curtains are made out of that you got from crypticcricket's YouTube but its probably organza. Small holes and might as well be a sock with those tiny holes. The fan is the go to device for summer ventilation. Hope this helps.

As a fellow Floridian, my advice is to make and buy gear to lighten up your pack over the summer, then go hiking in the Fall. Hiking season is over in Florida :(

I've been to south Florida, I couldn't imagine hiking or camping in that kind of heat.

I alway thought a fan would be awesome. Please enlighten me on these fans in the hammock. Are you using a computer fan with a 9v or buying some sort of fan. I agree it can get hot in a hammock w/netting in the summer.
