Crescent Valley Trip, Video

Trout, Evilleotter and I went in search of Crescent Valley Friday and Saturday. It is a secret spot I used to go to all the time many years ago. Well, we liked it so much we thought perhaps the Hoosier Hang would do good here. It's not hard to find, it's on the Sycamore Branch loop from the Tower parking lot on Tower Road. At a certain place on the first leg of the Sycamore Branch loop you go North and bushwhack about a quarter mile or half mile to the valley. If you all are interested in considering it for this years or next years HH, Let me know. Here is the video:

I am using iMovie, but now that I have made the trailer using the excerpts from the 10 minutes of video I took, I cannot get youtube to upload the 10 minutes. I am giving up for now, I am getting angry.

It was a great trip! I had a blast with Mule and Trout. Good hiking, good bushwhacking, good fire and great company.
The Crescent Valley really was a beautiful spot. Lots of trees, no undergrowth, sheltered from wind. I will definitely return to this spot. The bushwhack in was easy to find and easy to hike. Good water source. Mule found us a real gem!

Looks like a great spot for a hang Mule, looked a little windy. Almost scared me off at the end!!

I know how you feel. I use Sony Vegas and sometimes it too can be temperamental. Look forward to watching after you get the bugs worked out :)

I think that's a good spot. I like the old spot(s) too. I'm OK with either, and I don't mind bushwhacking. There wasn't an option for this view, so I'll just sit the poll out and see what everyone else wants. Like I posted on the other thread, I only suggest that the location is set firmly at least 2 weeks before the event so no one is confused.

These maps should help The green on shows the cross hairs right in the valley thanks to a fellow hanger, gmcttr.

I really liked the creek shots Mule! Thanks for the hiking companionship - Ryan and Steve. A great "indian" fire was made by Steve, while we gathered wood. Ryan has quite a knack for finding the best wood and had a very positive attitude! Good to have met him and hope to walk a trail again soon with him. Mule's bush whacking leadership skills let us to a nice spot. The deer poop never smelled, but Mule thought it tasted a little funny. The sycamore trail is mostly a nice "true" hiking trail instead of the horse trail or logging road. I like the longer method we took leaving, but that's because I'm not a superior bush whacker yet (and would be my way of going to the valley for a hang). Thanks again guys.

Personally,,I think Cresent Valley will be a awesome spot. You have all the surrounding trees and woods around the open valley,,great spot for a fire as big as you want, without burning the woods down,,looks like lots of firewood to be had from video and pics also. Ample water definitely during the spring, however in the middle of summer those creeks are totally dry till you go about mile down it. And even then, will work its way underground till you get to the road way way east. Easy hike, very little so called bush wacking and that will make it totally interesting. And its a new spot for you to enjoy. Parking problems are solved as well as you also have parking across the road from Fire Tower. Hope I can, and will definitely try and make this no matter where you have it.

Thanks, Acer, That's the way to make some comments. I hope everyone likes the place. The greenbriars going in are a real plus, without which the spot would be found by others and, well, we have this one to ourselves.

Can you park on one side of the road if the Firetower parking lot fills up? The lot across the road from parking is at the Grubb Ridge pulloff I am thinking of not the firetower parking lot???

There is no lot on the other side of the road, but you can park on both diodes of the parking lot and maybe some on ONE side of the road, too.

I think I need this last post (to get to 50) to be able to put up some pictures. Here goes nothing.

Ummmm.....hate to ask, but...

Steve, didn't we plan on having the first Hoosier Hang in the Deam, but had to move it to the Nebo Ridge area due to the number of attendees? Since the Deam is a Wilderness Area, isn't there a limit of 10 in a group? I don't think this hang has ever been below twice that number....

All saddle, pack, or draft animals must be kept on trails posted or otherwise designated for horse use. Trails authorized for horse use are marked by brown plastic posts with a decal depicting a horseback rider. Other areas are closed to horse use, but hiking is allowed anywhere within the area. (See map on reverse for trail system).
Trail Use Permits are required for riding a horse on the Hoosier N. F. Permits may be purchased as annual permits ($35/year) or day-use tags ($5/day) from Hoosier N.F. offices and some local stores. A tag is required for each adult rider. Horseback riders 16 years of age and younger are exempt from the permit requirement. A permit tag is not required for foals without a rider or pack stock. Annual permits must be signed.
Camping is prohibited within 100 yards of Tower Ridge Road between Highway 446 and the junction of Hickory Ridge Road (1500 W) and Maumee Road (1150 N). Note: Camping is still permitted within Blackwell Horse Camp.
Camping within 100 feet of ponds, lakes, trails, or streams is allowed only on designated sites. Walk-in camping throughout the rest of the wilderness area is not restricted.
Parking is allowed along Tower Ridge Road in only three locations: Blackwell Horse Camp, Grubb Ridge Trailhead, and the Hickory Ridge Fire Tower.
Use of wheeled vehicles, including carts, wagons, or bicycles, is prohibited within the wilderness area.
Campsites must be occupied the first night, and may not be left unattended for more than 24 hours without permission. Camping is limited to 14 days.
The only food or beverage containers permitted within the Wilderness are those intended for reuse or burnable packaging. Spray paint is not allowed in the Wilderness. Cans and glass bottles are not allowed. If you packed it in, pack it back out. Never bury garbage.
Hunting is permitted in the Wilderness. Target shooting or practicing is not allowed.
Stock may not be tied within reach of any living tree.
Group size is limited to 10 persons or less.


Now that I think about this,,we are not hiking in as a group,,just meeting in the woods,,,and your definitely not going to run into a Ranger back in the woods. Besides,,they have been sequestered. :lol:

I like the idea of going somewhere new. Put me down for the crescent valley. Looking forward to seeing everyone.

Does anyone have a real problem with this? We will split up in several groups once most of us gets there.

Gabe, Brandon and I are meeting Sat at 1PM at the tower on tower road to hike into Crescent Valley and spend the night. Anyone, Everyone is invited.
