I've got the opportunity to go hammock camping in Scotland next year.
The problem is, it'll probably be during midge season (so I'm told).
I've understood the little bloodsucking creatures are hard to keep out.
I'm wondering if any of our UK members have any experience with the bug netting used in the Warbonnet BB and the Traveller bug net? Is it midge proof?
The only hit I got when doing a search here said it is not :(

I'm not familiar with a "midge" but the netting is "No seeum". If a midge is smaller, I bet a good doucing of Permethrin would solve the problem. I spray my netting and hammock before every major trip.
It's 100% Grade-A US standard Midget proof netting.
But I don't know about the midge.
Well, according to google, they are a gnat like insect. Apparently they can be quite the little buggers. I think you should be fine, but I would also spay with permethrin before you go.
The Scottish midge has a wingspan of 1-2mm. Check that against the weave of you netting.

The Warbonnet homepage says they're using bug netting made of 1 oz polyester noseeum netting.
The thing is, there's noseeum and there's noseeum. Depending on the chosen quality, it could have a whole range of different hole sizes. Fair enough, all of them should theoretically keep the Scottish midge at bay, but after having read a thread here at hammockforums claiming the midges got inside a BB, it does get me worried.

Is there anyone out there with practical experience of using the BB and/or the traveller bugnet and fending off the dreaded Scottish midge (or failing to do so)?
We have no see-ums in Michigan about labor day. They are relentless little insects barely visible to the eye. My WBBB is a safe getaway from the litle **&^%!!!.
Karl; i know of at least one person using a WBBB in scotland with Midges. Maybe Shewie will post in here if he see's this.

I just got back a month ago from hiking with Shewie and some of the other BC hangers around Braemar (Scotland Highlands). I had a stock BB bug net and I was midge free. I did have a top cover but it is not form fitted and it was not what was keeping them out. I heard about how they can get through the net but it held them at bay. BTW take a head net, gloves, and avon's skin so soft.

If midges are getting through noseeum netting then you have my sympathy.

Maybe the buggers are just the size to sometimes be able to push their way through the netting. In that case, it would probably make the problem a noseeum netting batch related one. I.e. if you're lucky, the stock netting will be fine. If you're not and your WBBB has a net made of the "wrong" batch, the midges will have a meal...Quote:
