Looking to maybe getting a hang started in the Cohutta Wilderness in North Ga would anyone be up for it.
If the timings right for me to get away I'm game.
When are you thinking of setting this up? Looks fun.
I've always wanted to hike Jack's River trail.....Is there a suitable group hanging site in that location?
The Cohuta is beautiful, and very remote...the jacks river trail is an awesome hike, especially in the summer with the 20+ river crossings one way. I'm going to hike a southern section middle of this month so I will keep my eyes open for a good spot.
I think each of us would get out every weekend if we could, possibly even weekdays... So the major item is figuring out when to do it.
For those of you wondering where - the central area of North Georgia right on the Tenn line.

Count me in!!! Maddog:D
My favorite place, hope it works out so I can make it.
Jacks river is a great trail most of the trails up there have great per built campsites only thing is alot of river crossings on the trails so don't know how many would be up for it in colder weather but I'm game whenever.
Normally it is location, location, location; but with this trip it would be time, time, time?

That is very true im thinking maybe panther creek falls if we do it some time soon were you can hike in from three forks plot and not have to cross the river much. but im not sure when they shut the road down up there
Thinking mid Feb. Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks for the info lazyboy
That is a good route. Goes through Brye Field which, if you had a large group, is a great place to "hang".Quote:
They shut the road Jan. 1 but you can get there via Hickory creek trail from the fs 17, fs 630 trail head, to the Conasauga River Trail up river to the Panther Creek Trail, 1 river crossing, a few small creek crossing, about 5 miles
I've been trying to get up there ever since early fall to test out some gear. Feb sounds good. I did this same hike last Feb. and had some snow with temps in the teens during the day. Negotiating the bolder field at the base of the falls in the ice and snow was tough but do-able. The rock face at the top of the falls is another great place to hang with a great view.https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v...type=2&theater
Just another thought, if we could not do anything in Feb. They will open the roads on March 1st. Maybe a large group hang at the field at Little Bald Mountain. The field is big enough for a very large group with tent campers as well as hammock campers. There is a great trial off the field to a water fall about 4 miles down the mountain, with plenty of places to hang, as well as other hikes in the Wilderness area. Great mountain biking as well!
I would do it. I'm new to the forum and I've never been to a group hang- and this is in my neck of the woods. Would love to see some other folks' set-ups and techniques.
I'm down. I love the Cohutta.
Count me in unless work dictates otherwise
Sounds sweet
sounds good let me know the dates i might be able to get off work to go.
Let's see if we can come up with a date for this. My schedule is pretty flexable. Which sounds better, Feb, March, April? Weekends or weekdays?
I am also a member of a group out of Chattanooga that does trips into the Cohuttas, http://chattanooga.outdoorclubsouth.com/, I could post something with them as well just to generate some more interest.
Keep me posted, I would be interested especially since it's in the back yard. I done a small hang up on Jacks River last April and had a blast!
I too am interested in a group hang around that time.
What you guys say to march 30 & 31
Ok guys here is what I'm thinking for the first cohutta wilderness hang March 23 &24 at panther creek falls. Tell me what you guys think.
Barring something unforseen, I'm in.
In pending date
Calendar marked...
The Drive
From Chatsworth GA, take Hwy 411 North to Eton. Turn Right onto CCC camp RD. On CCC Camp Rd pavement will end and head up the mountain running along Holly Creek. Mullberry Gap Rd will cut off to the right but continue on CCC Camp Rd. You will pass a DNR check in station on your right. Once past the check in station the road will split and you will need to turn left to continue onto Old CCC Camp RD. You will come to the dead end of Old CCC Camp Rd and take a right onto Conasauga Lake Rd. You will pass the Conasauga Trailhead on your right and will come to Three Forks Trailhead which will also be on your right. This will be where you will need to park.
The Hike
From parking area walk East Cowpen Trail. This was once a highway Old GA 2. At .4 miles you will reach Rough Ridge Trail, Which leaves right. Keep on East Cowpen Trail and you will reach Panther Creek Trail on your left at 2.3 miles. Follow Panther Creek Trail till it reaches the falls. For this hike the total distance is 8.2 miles in and out.
That will work for me! I will put it down.
FYI, The 31st is Easter Sunday, so I might go in on the 29th and come out the evening of the 30th.
Didn't think of that would you guys have any rejections about moving it up to March 23 & 24 due to Easter?
That would be fine with me, I didn't think about it being Easter until I was writing it on the calender.
Re-marking calendar...
i live in cohatta close to the cohatta wilderness area if my uncle is up for it i am to so when would this hang be next weekend or so?
Any of you guys members with http://chattanooga.outdoorclubsouth.com/? Should we post something with them as well? I know they have a few hammock campers.
I'd also like to do a hang up on Lake Jocassee sometime in April. We could do a kayak/hang.
If you are going to come in on the west side of the WMA, you may as well just take 630 up to the parking lot at Little Rough Creek and hike down to the Conasauga River Trail then up Panther Creek Trail to the falls. Either way in, from the west or east, it's a ball buster of a hike! Great place to hang at the top of the falls!
What would be the distance for the hike
I may join in also.
