Hammocks are, of course, great for relaxing. And different people have different attitudes about this version of "smoking in bed." [With apologies to Nina Simone, who smoked on record, life and song on that subject. eg: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLY-73C6-_c]
Not after my first night in a hammock, I somehow burned a small hole in it :mad:
I don't smoke in my house anyway so no biggie.
I use to, but then I stopped smoking, so now I don't.
I do, but I make sure to hang over side a little.
Even when I smoked I hated the smell of smoke so it's a big NO for me...
I sit in my hammock and smoke cigars, but no cigarettes.
I wouldn't lay down with my cigar to smoke, but sitting and watching the sunset with a stogie is an awfully peaceful thing. :cool:
I found a pipe is a good match for a hammock. They both really let you stop and think for a while. And there's no ash to be dropped.
I don't smoke but in terms of buying one - i would consider, if the deal was really good and no damage. But most of the time I would not no.
I don't smoke laying down in mine, but it is very relaxing to sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds with some tobacco before getting ready for bed.
Funny because I bought a terrific Clark from an HF member who was meticulous about describing defects in his description here, the only one mentioned being a single tip-of-finger-sized hole in the bug netting. Otherwise, took great care of his gear, and not a tear or loose seam anywhere.....but accidents will happen. (Every guy line and tensioner was carefully tied and bundled when received, and the tarp was snake-skinned, gratis.)Quote:

Three thorough washings --hot water with quality laundry detergent on two, and pine-oil soap on another, of both tarp and hammock, and then a few days of air, and it smelled clean. (I suspect netting captures and hold a lot of aroma, especially if you are smoking inside of it.)
I didn't complain to seller about the condition, because he, as a smoker, probably camped with other smokers.
That's why the poll. And because I just received a TTTtrailgear on-circuit-on-loan that I must air for several days, or wash, before I will put down garments or me-wearing-wool in/on. Tobacco tars and addititves (and likely from unfiltered cigarettes.)
It doesn't and wouldn't bother me either way.
Most of the trips I come back from has my kit reeking of smoke from the fire anyway. A fire will always smoke more than I ever can.

I'm not a habitual smoker but I do enjoy my pipe some evenings. I don't see a problem with it as long as you're careful
I don't smoke and I don't like smelling smoke (as a child I suffered from asthma attacks), but I'd buy a hammock from a smoker because washings would eventually cure it. Soak it in a bucket of suds for half a day, agitate it around every time you thought about it, rinse well and hang dry and leave out in the yard for a day or two... Were I a smoker I'd wash the hammock a time or three before selling it, though. That said, my hammock has smelled like a campfire many times and while it's not the same, it is smoke.
I do enjoy an occaisional pipe, but I can't recall ever smoking one in the hammock. Usually it's a before bed watching the sun go down and making an offering ritual (not to mention keeping the mosquitoes at bay for a bit) before crawling into the hammock and the mosquito free bug net.

I used to smoke, long before I discovered hammocking, and while I don't mind people smoking around me, I wouldn't want a hammock that smelled of cigarettes (too many memories). Having my gear smell of campfire smoke is different, I LIKE those memories!
Diy my hammocks so will focus my comments on smoking in my hammock. Gave up cigarettes quite a few years back but still enjoy a pipe. But smoke in the hammock, never, a lot of my shirts have burns in them from rampant ashes. Would never subject my hammock to that hazard.

And the "structural ridgeline" (SRL) refers to the purely coincident fact that from the outset a steady 83-85% --SRL percentage -- of those polled don't want cigarettes or cigarette smoke residues or smells in their hammock or a previously owned one offered for sale..
If the survey didn't selectively scare some folks away, it looks like about 15% of HF members might be smokers.

I personally don't smoke tobacco cigarettes in the hammock. But, as you all know sometimes camping and hammocking can impart smoky odours with varying degrees of persistence depending on outdoor activities. I would not, however, sell a smelly 2nd hand item to a paying customer unless implicitly stated it has smoke stink. Of some sort...

I never could stand the smell of cigarette smoke. Both of me parents were smokers.
Most of the pipe smoking I do these days is from the hammock but I also detest the smell of cigarette smoke. But if it was a great deal I would just wash it till it smelled perty again.
FYI: A small amount of amonia in the wash will remove smoke orders. I've been doing it to my clothes for years. I've found it works better than the name brand oder removers. YMMV
