Double sleeping bag
Not sure if this is the right place for this topic, as it kind of applies to top and bottom insulation. Oh well, here goes.
So I was thinking today, why not put one sleeping bag inside another, to help stay warm, instead of using a quilt or pad. Now I know that compression is an issue with sleeping bags, but would having two together help?
Here's what i'm thinking: I have a thin, small 45 degree mummy bag that would fit perfectly into my huge -10 mummy bag. That should keep me warm from all sides right?
Obviously this is not a light weight solution, as you are bringing two sleeping bags. That is not the question. The question is will this work? And how far down in degrees do you think I could get?
-
I think at our latitude it may work to keep you warm, but it would be a tight fit with little room to move in the hammock.
-
I don't mind that, I hardly move as it is. I'll be moving to Washington state in a few Weeks, do you think it will be warm enough? The Winters are in the 30s-40s and the summer is around the 50s.
-
I think it would be my last choice. No matter how you slice it compressed insulation is an issue. I think you will end up cooked except for the cold spots under your hips and shoulders.
-
two bags? unzip one and tie it up under your hammock (or put it in some kind of undercover like a garlington insulator (http://www.garlington.biz/Ray/Hammoc.../Insulator.htm)) and use the other inside the hammock.
No need to layer them.

I'll probably do something like that. I might eventually turn the -10 bag into a top quilt. Or maybe a peapod like Shug does. I'm going to mess with some ideas when I get top Washington.
-
You could use the -10 mummy bag as a TQ and use the 40 mummy bag as the UQ. Just use a weather shield under the UQ to help with the humid weather in Washington State. It will also act as wind shield for the 40 UQ bag to lower how cold you can go.
-
Hmmm......not a bad idea. Might have to give that a try also. So many ideas now. I'm sure at some point I'll buy an UQ. Just looking for a temporary solution
-
All you can do is try it out and see if it works for you.
-
That's what I plan to do. I wonder if the 40 bag will be warm enough as an UQ. I'm also not to sure on how to hang it. I don't really want to cut it up and modify it. I guess I have some trial and error to do on my next day off.
