Hammock stand using a set of speaker stands?

I was helping a buddy of mine load some DJ equipment since his back went out and could not lift his massive speakers. He pulled out his stands for those massive speakers and my wheels started turning...His speaker stands were light weight tubular aluminum with a telescoping pole on the top. I came home and started googling. I found these on Amazon:

They are rated for 200 LBS EACH and apparently weigh in at about 9 LBS EACH. I think a set of these might make a pretty nice Hammock stand. Any thoughts? Anyone ever try these?

Boy I don't know if they'd work too well??? That aluminum is ok at taking straight vertical loads but with a hammock you'll be seeing a more angular load even if you have a horizontal support bar over top. Not sure how structurally sound the aluminum is in those but I've seen a fair share of those speaker stands being an ex-musician and I don't recall them being all that strong.

I like it.

My concern would be how much sideways pressure the base will hold. On my stand I used galvanized conduit (defiantly overkill) and amsteel for the tie outs. On a four night trip every morning I would either reposition the base or tighten up the guide lines. Keep in mind I have not seen these audio stands in person, but I do believe that you are on to something.

Could be a nice variation on the turtledog stand.

A bit expensive but nice.

I looked at those and thought like SteveS about the Turtle stands. If you could add a ridgepole to these two I think it may just work. But at $39 an piece that can get a bit expensive.

Did you ever try this? I'm looking into some kind of stand, and I would be very interested to know if this works.

I use these on a regular basis, and I do notice the sway to spearker has when full extended, but I wonder if some ratchet straps from the top down to each leg would strengthen it up enough? I know there are plenty that can hold the weight...

They'd definitely need a ridgepole. Also, the locking mechanism for the extendable upright may not be strong enough. If it's a screw type, definitely not. A toggle, maybe ....

That would be a neat idea, I'd like to see a set in action.

I did not ever try this...I got in on the free shipping for the handy hammock and decided it was worth it to not have to worry about DIYing something like this up. But I would be interested in seeing someone trying it.

175 on each stand - strap one of the fence top-rail posts to the top with a couple of eye-bolts screwed in a couple of inches in from the mount on top of the stand. With all the weight pushing down and split between the two stands it should work - right?

Something like this maybe, but I don't think you'll have much luck without the suportting truss across the top.

Worked on stages for awhile setting up speakers & mics. The weight rating on these is primarily because of the locking collar. If you exceed the weight limit the tube can colapse into the base as the fiction on the locking collar is overcome. I believe the tubing has much greater strength in that vertical configuration. Adding the truss across the top may make it possible to safely use as a hammock stand. YMMV, ATTEMPT AT YOUR OWN RISK, NOT RESPINBILE FOR BRUISES OF PHYSICAL OR EMOTIONAL NATURE.

I use these types of stands all the time at work, and have particular experience with the American DJ models. What they don't tell you is
A) the weight limit is based on zero vertical extension. The locking collar that holds the vertical bar is just a plastic friction collar and it will slip vertically at much less than 200. And they get weaker with age as the aluminum tube and collars get polished and smooth. Generally anything over 60 pounds vertical will start to slip
B) The tubing is very thin walled and it only takes a small dent to weaken it enough to fail. I've had them fall when one kid tripped and landed on a leg at a dance party.
C) Those vertical masts are rated for ZERO lateral load. You could do the truss across the top but only if you hand from the truss itself, not the masts.

All told, you'll get off much cheaper and lighter with three 2"x2"x8' pieces of lumber and when folded up they will pack to a smaller diameter than those speaker stands do.
Edit: Although, yes, the stands would collapse to a shorter length. IMHO, the only way they would be superior.

Love the idea and design of the Handy hammock but still need a way to hang your tarp. otherwise really cool product
