Ring system slipping

I recently bought some 1 inch heavy polypro straps with D rings from strapworks,(nice stuff) I tried making the ring setup. Cord from the hammock to a prussic knot on the two rings. It seems very solid. But when I attached it to the tree I get some slippage. I was slowly lowered to ground level. It would have made for a funny video. Should I have gotten the nylon strapping instead, or a wider 1.5" strap? It seems like I have the makings of a simple system once I get the bugs out. Do the cam buckles lock up better?

With ring buckles, you have to tie a knot to back up the buckles to prevent slipping. A simple half-hitch will be sufficient, and is easy to untie. But yes, cinch buckles don't require backup knots.

also its possible to use a single ring with a girth hitch - I have not had any noticeable slippage with that choice

From the hammock to the two solid rings it seems rock solid. Its the webbing that is not locking tight with the 1.5" round rings.

Another question, if I get another set of cam straps, will 1.5" strapping work well with 1.5 ID rings?

The width of the webbing you're using is fine. It really just needs to be backed up by a half-hitch. Wider webbing will do the same thing.

And per your original question - no, you don't want nylon webbing. It will stretch, especially when wet.

Three things to check on ring suspensions.
1 Make sure the rings are held by prussics or something that will clamp down tight. It sounds like you have that covered.

2 make sure the rings and webbing are aligned properly. The rings need to be right over each other, not offset somehow and the webbing needs to feed out of the rings right in line with itself. If the webbing feeds out at an agle it will tend to slip.

3 put that slippery half hitch right tight up against the rings and snug it down tight.

If those three steps are proper you should have a solid suspension. The safety knot is important.
