Snake skins from pantyhose/tights

Some folks wanted to see my snake skins made from a pair of FOREST GREEN TIGHTS I bought at a rummage sale, brand new for 50 cents. Here's a picture of the snake skins on my GuideGear 12x12 tarp with a 12-foot ridgeline:

Some folks wonder if there is an advantage to using pantyhose or tights vs. fabric to make snake skins. Here's how the snake skins from tights measure up:

1.7 ounces for the pair--the cordage to tie the two halves together is longer than on my organza set.

Here's the low down on another set of snake skins I sewed from 100% polyester organza:

1.9 ounces for the pair

Granted, 2/10ths of an ounce is not a lot. But the snake skins from tights are less bulky and help compress the tarp. Plus, they are easier to pull over the tarp because they are so darn stretchy. And I can't think of a better use for forest green tights!!! :scared:

Snake skins--basically--are a pair of tapered tubes. Pantyhose or tights ARE a pair of tapered tubes. But, of course, there's nothing wrong with sewing a pair of tapered tubes from fabric either.

Bottom line, both pantyhose/tights snake skins and organza snake skins are very light-weight and make stowing a tarp neatly and quickly very easy. :D

I was thinking the same thing - part of the reason we used mosquito netting for ours was to allow the tarp to dry out at least somewhat. If these dry well (I could see them wicking water fairly well), it might be a good alternative.

For sure, in that regard, tights do as well as mosquito netting. I'm not convinced any tarp can dry out very well when it's rolled up--even if it weren't in ANY skins at all!

I gave it a shot with some panty hose. I don't think it's a long term solution. I put a hole at each foot end and put my suspension through. I had to stretch them a lot (and I bought the biggest size) to get full coverage on my Wilderness Logics Tad Pole (their smallest tarp). Then once you get them fully covered, it's a challenge to keep them there. Had to use some nite-ize reusable twist ties. The panty hose already have runs where I put the holes. I don't think this is a long term solution.

That ultimately could work, but more than I really wanted to mess with. The nice thing about snake skins made by hennesy or made from noseeum is that they just slide and you don't have to worry about them shooting back. I think the stretchiness of the pantyhose works against them in this situation. Some people may like it, but they're not for me.

I actually ordered a custom made set from Kat at mountaingoatgear for my warbonnet superfly. Haven't got them yet, but I hear she does great work.

What if you took a third leg, cut the toe open, and use it to cover the gap in the center left by the two you are currently using?

Again, not ideal or long term but might work.

Camruns, did you use the stockings from the toe all the way up to the waist line, including the panty? That's what I did, and I have no trouble covering my 12-foot ridgeline. I'm not surprised pantihose are not strong enough to last more than a couple of uses. But my nylon tights are holding up very well so far. I'm sure you'll love your mountaingoat gear :boggle:

Alas, no, L.D. I'd love to go and meet you and other fellow hangers, but family obligations prohibit an overnight trip these days. Sounds like a bunch of fun though! :D

+1 on Kat's. Order the little pockets for the ends to stow your ridge line. Works good on my SF.

OK...I just got my first hammock (WBBB) yesterday from the "For Sale" section on this wonderful site. Got the Superfly too.

My question would be: when the fly is wet and I stuff it in the bag the fly came with, all of the excess moisture will seep out of the bag (bag not waterproof) onto my backpack (even if I bungee it on the outside), how does everyone deal with a wet fly in the mesh snake skins?

Not the lightest solution, but more durable than panty hose. In my experience, Velcro and the male side of any hook-and-loop is to hosiery what Deet is to Nylon: aggressive, tenacious, and damaging. Even more expensive panty hose.

For large mesh laundry bag: Cheap and available retail source of such is your Dollar Store, where they may also come in blue and in green. But not, to my knowledge in camo. Note that this polyester mesh, unlike the stuff of stockings, does not stretch.

(And, in further thread drift, (or should your SM be broken): Those mesh laundry bags are great for very airy quilt storage.)
