where you guys live?
I keep reading about everyone using silk or fleece blankets for overquilts, and not needing underquilts. Just reading it makes me freeze. On average at night it's like 9*C(I don't know Fahrenheit, and I don't know how to convert it either) And I wouldn't dream of not using a sleeping bag.
So give me some numbers.
Summer lows in the mountains north of Atlanta where I live are typically in the 60s. There are nights where it never gets below 70. Its the reason I started hammocking in the first place, nothing like the comfort and coolness of a hammock on a sultry evening.Quote:

You can do all kinds of conversions using Google. Want to convert grams to ounces, simple, centimeters to inches, again simple. Google is really fantastic.
Asking us in Alberta what the night time temps are is a daunting question. In Edmonton, this last month, we have had lows in the 70's(20s C), right down to lows in the 40's(teens c). If you head into the Rockies, the answer can be lows in the 60's to lows in the 30's. If one is close to glaciers, the lows can be in the 20's(-teens C). Just to support the old addage: If you don't like the weather, wait a few minutes.

average lows in the summer here in middle tenn can be low 50's to low 70's
mainly in the 60's for lows most of the time,i use a full length ultra light military thermarest in my claytor jungle hammock and a dollar store micro fleece throw blanket,mine is od green of coarse:cool:neo

Up here north you really need to prepare for almost freezing every night if you sleep outdoors, although a normal night in summer is probably 50 F/10 Cish. Then again, with the wonders of imported American heat (yay Gulf Stream), I've hung in a low of 50 F/10 C on November 14th. That's decidedly unusual, though.
The highest low I've ever personally witnessed in Finland was 16 C (61 F). The highs of the days before and after that were well over 30 C/85 F. So it's not always cold here. Only usually.

I've got a Hennessy Deluxe Asym and use it with a CCF pad or an underquilt. I'm nowhere near a perfect insulation solution yet. Sufficient insulation is easy with pads but they get really bulky really fast when it gets cold.Quote:

jeez it's hot where you guys live, granted you do all live wayyyy closer to the equator. So it makes sense, but I just can't get around being able to go camping and be able to use a silk sleeping bag liner.

Not the coldest night I've had, but by far the biggest surprise.
Was in Los Angeles visiting friends and relatives once. It was early spring, April I believe.
During the day, the temperatures were very comfortably in the 70s. I had been warned to bring a light jacket for evening and night - as soon as the sun goes down the temperature drops.
What I wasn't prepared for was the COLD. Had to go inside long before midnight and the temperature was still dropping. In the morning, about 5 or 6, there was frost on the grass in the front and back yards. So it got below freezing. Don't know how much below.
So, if you do decide to camp out in LA, don't assume it will always be warm. Learned there and then that LA was/is a desert and deserts get cold at night.

Q, you should be sleeping out in your hammock! :D Sounds like perfect weather for comfortable hanging. Start testing some UQ options before it gets really cold.
It was 85* last night at 11:00 here. Woke up this morning at 8:30 and it was already 75 and just getting hotter. Heat index for today is supposed to reach 102.
I never bother using converters. I also cheat. 10 C = 50 F (which happens to be true) and then adjust by 1 C for every 2 F (which happens to be false). The error is small enough to ignore for the temperatures that happen in weather.Quote:

We in central Florida don't get below 21.1 C (70 F) from mid-May until late September or early October every year. Humidity now (about 5 a.m.) is 78% and temp is 26.6 C (80 F). Hot and muggy.

Oh yeah, it's about 90° F (32°C) here and rainy. That tropical storm just came through here.
I got kinda cold the last time I hammocked outside two weekends ago here in Iowa. I started off rather warm in my 45* bag, so I had it completely unzipped and open. I woke up around 2:30 feeling rather cold, so I zipped up the bag and slept the rest of the night. I almost put on a light jacket as well, but was too lazy to do anything more than zip up the bag.
How do you guys handle the 10 to 12 degree temperature drops that occur between 10:00pm and 4:30?

In the three seasons here where that matters :) I do what you did. I pull the bag farther up until it's all the way up, then zip up if it gets even colder. My big rectangular BA Mystic has a full length zipper, and you can go from about 60° wide open to about 20° fully shut that way without doing anything else.
I am, fortunately, a warm sleeper. I can get away with my kifaru woobie on top, and and my HH asym with the underpad underneath. I was out last weekend, and it dropped into the mid 40s overnight...admittedly, I got a little chilly. But, overall, it wasnt too bad. I do keep a knit cap with me though, and, I will put it on when I feel cold. But, normally, it isnt too bad.
