Ok what does "shoulder season" mean? Is it the term for cooler months? Where did it come from?
I think I may hafta disagree though. I just spent Wed night on the trail in Missouri swimming in a pool of sweat. It was 87* at 9pm and only got down to a low of 71*. A far cry from fall for sure. Now I understand why some people don't camp in the summer. Makes me appreciate the Appalachians that much more. At least it gets down in the 60s there during the summer.
I think I may hafta make a trip up towards your neck of the woods when I get home and enjoy some of that crispy fallness.
Ha!! Man, 87 at 9 pm sounds brutal! Bet you were glad to be in a hammock, anyway. Shoulder season is the time between the hottest and the coldest seasons. It's been hot up here too, but the weather really broke overnight. That's why it feels so great. Hope you find some relief soon, too!
I wish I was up in Yancey Co. hiking among the remaining Hemlocks, checking out some great waterfalls. But, 65* at 10:15 north of Atlanta in early September is great just hope it stays.
Ahhh my backpacking season has finally started! I love this time of the year.
It has broken into the upper 70's for a low only this week here in south Florida. It's 90 by 9:00 a.m. with a heat index of 100. This won't begin to change for another month. I'm headed to New Hampshire in a few weeks. :D
58 AND MUGGY HERE IN PORTLAND, OREGON. what happened to the weather? I think I will take our rain gear, we are leaving shortly for a two day hang.
We had a cold front go thru,,dumped 1.7 inches of rain on us,,for the last 3 months we have been down more than 15" of rain,,now in a week,,we get 5.5" and everything is greening up with a explosion of fallish wild flowers finally, Temp tonite will be 51,,,we have the windows open for the second time since spring,,man,,this is too good to be true and I know it will heat up again but for now, will sleep tonite with the windows wide open. :)
I love when the air turns crisp. Being highly allergic to bee stings I find myself enjoying being in the woods more.
I'm still waiting on an explanation of shoulder season and the genesis of the term. Is it some kind of local term? It just doesn't make any sense to me.
Ok, I just had to google it......shoulder season, the time between high and low peak travel seasons, usually the spring and fall, lower fares, etc. No one is travelling to SW Oklahoma, 3 days ago 108 degrees, then cold front with no rain, today was high 90s.
Man, that sounds like some great weather to do a thru-hike. :)
Fronkey
Shoulder HA! last night we hung on Roan High Knob and the lows were in the thirties :)
Mosquitos still like packs of ravenous rabid zombie wolves.
Bug net stays on all year. We can get a day when it hits 60 in Dec or Jan and the bugs come out en masse.
37° in Marqeutte this morning. TAKE THAT mosquitoes!
Well, I meant more in the "shoulder season backpacking" sense. See, for example, here: article on shoulder season hiking
We're off to Mt. Mitchell tomorrow. Hiking the Black Mountain Crest Trail again. :boggle:
I hadn't heard the term before, but hooray and huzzah, its finally cooling off. Been able to sleep with the windows open for a few nights now. Sitting here next to an open window and listening to the hummingbirds.
Its not going to get down into the 40s here for months yet. But we did get down to 61 this morning.
About ten years ago, ospreys, after being devastated by DDT, were reintroduced to my coastal town. When they arrive in March, I know winter is over. And when they depart in late August, early September, I know fall weather is on its way!
They were here last week, and now the ospreys are gone. Temps were in the fifties this morning - I had to put a fleece on! The low temps are also cramping the style of the mosquitoes, which is good 'cause they were bad last week.
Bring on shoulder season, when the ospreys head south for the winter!
We are slowly loosing our hummingbirds. They are moving south a few at a time, as we are filling the feeders less. Its alittle early for the hummingbirds as they normally hang around till first of Oct and leave enmass, but because of the funky weather this year,,they are trickling down slowly and leaving. We have another cold front moving in Friday nite.
our hummingbirds are still here. Last week I was grilling some steaks and the hummingbirds didn't like it since there feeder is 3 ft away..I was getting buzzed by them..lol
