underquilts and diagonally lay

he there,
i'm new here and had some thoughts about the underquilts and how most people lay in there hammocks.
i see that most uq's are rectangular in shape. i know that most people lay in there hammocks diagonally. but why the uq in rectangular shape? would't id be also more logical to make them a-symmetrical as well?

With some creative suspension, you can make a quilt more closely conform to your diagonal self.

Most UQ's are wide enough that they take on an asym shape once the person lays in the hammock without too much of a compression in down if it is cut right. you can also cinch the ends to one side or the other if you have the UQ configured that way, which is a big help. hope this helps

I wrap my suspension to make my UQ go at more of the angle that my body takes in the hammock. Never had any issues.

I agree with others that you can tweak the suspension to "shape" the UQ.

I have made asym underquilts for my WBBB which works fine since it's a "directional" hammock. I simply cut the UQ as a parallelogram with a 6" offset.

However, be warned that if you want to use these quilts on a "regular" hammock where you can switch diagonals at will, you will have a "long axis" and a "short axis". Not the most versatile of situations.

thanks guys, got a good idea from shugs video on how to tweak the uq to an parallelogram. is there a final verdict on insulation? there are so many opinions that i can't really figure it out anymore.

I worried this to death when I made my underquilt.
I finally decided that "Imitation of excellence" was the way to go.

So, I poured over all the JRB quilts pictures I could find.

By adding velcro tabs that fastens around the hammock tieouts, I have no problem with my diagonal lie with the rectangular quilt.

It's much more important to allow for the curvature of the quilt under the hammock to prevent "squashing" (tech term!!!) of the insulation under you. I made the inner channel 6 in. and the outer 7 1/2 in.

Also: few mention the direction of the baffles. JRB run theirs side to side, rather than lengthwise. Hence, so did I. Most DIY's seem to run them lengthwise.

Re. suspension: I finally ended up with shock cord suspension adjusted tight enough to hold the quilt snugly against the hammock. This finally got rid of the cold spots. Apparently, the curvature designs mentioned above takes care of "squishing"

Thanks for posting this again. I made an UQ out of a sleeping bag until I make a down one. When I tested it out, I had a hard time hanging it well. Your way in the video looks much easier.

I've wondered about this too, but I tend to switch the angle of my lay from side-to-side depending on the view or my mood, so an asymmetrical UQ might fit better one way but would cramp my flexibility.
