I have a continuous ridgeline setup and had been using S-Biners but I am wondering what others are doing. I'm thinking that something that is permanently attached to the ridgeline might be better so it doesn't get lost. What do you use to attach your tarp to your ridgeline?
I guess I'm the odd man off...I use Fig 9s on either side of the tarp, with no ridgeline running under the tarp. I just attach either end to the tree and adjust/tighten via the Fig 9s on either end.
I use prussiks on the ridge line and trail stick toggles to attach them to the tarp. I tried using a soft-shackle prussik for this but found them too fiddly to open and close when made of 1.7 mm Zing-it. If they're fiddly when it's warm out, they are probably impossible with cold hands. I may grab some micro biners or s biners to use instead of sticks.
I tie loops of cordage directly to the rings and prussic to the ridgeline.
Does anyone have a reason why your tarp would ever need to be removed from your continuous ridgeline?
I know different strokes for different folks, but I was contemplating attachment methods long ago and went with "permanently" attaching it to the ridgeline.
Haven't looked back (or detached the tarp from the ridgeline) since.

I do not use a continuous ridgeline so I had two separate lines, one at each end of the tarp going around each tree. My method of attachment at the tree is a Figure 9 at each tree.
for me, i like having the continuous ridgeline hung free of the tarp-- even if it's kept in snakeskins, or a bishop-style bag. can't really say WHY, but i like modular.Quote:

Tendertoe - that's a great question. I was thinking that myself.. Why am I disconnecting this anyway? Do you have any issues with adjusting the tarp position along your CRL with it permanently attached? Any trouble getting it strung up?
None whatsoever, the prussics slide easily anywhere on the CRL.Quote:

I have the Clark North American and they use a bungee system that keeps everything together. I have pics in my profile that show what I'm talking about.
I use some soft shackles prussics that I made from Opie's pictoral here. While I haven't needed to remove my tarp from my CRL, I like the fact that I can very easily. For the ends of the CRL I'm using a knotbone and one of Dutch's tarp flyz.

I use nacrabiners and prussics... works for me. My nacrabiners are made from zip it, I've thought of making from something a little larger and /or maybe using a soft shackle which might be easier to open.

You could just tie a bowline hitch at one end and use a tarp fly on the other :)
I copied this CRL set up. I will leave the S-biners and line on for the tarp tube set up. I want to be able to set up the tarps in different configurations so the Prussiks and S-biners.
Now being a motorcycle hanger means I sometimes just use the bungie cords (all around) with no line at all. Just a different wrinkle if you like. Nite-Ize 5mm adjustable bungies HERE seem to work well but the gobs of garden variety ones all us moto folk have work too.
wow this thread is so interesting! now i am wondering if i should try a CRL. currently i use what Hawk-Eye uses - (and who doesn't want to be more like Hawk-Eye? ;) cord at each end of the tarp with Dutch's Tarp Flyz, which incidentally work well with 1.5 Z-line that Joe from Z-Packs sells. my tarp is a Z-Packs cuben fiber hammock tarp with doors.
i was thinking of a CRL with a Dutch clip on one end, a Tarp Flyz on the other end, and prussik knots to attach the tarp to the CRL. is the big advantage that you can hang the CRL easily and slide you tarp quickly in place over your hammock? any feedback is much appreciated :)
That's exactly why I like the CRL set up... it's quick to get up and once it's up the tarp is easily centered over you hammock. Check out his Dutch hook for the other end instead of the clip. I'd think that would be the lighter option and a quicker set up.Quote:

Like to hang the ridge line and tarp separately. Find it easier to get the ridge line hung without the tarp hanging from it.
Use 3 Prussics on the ridge line:
- 1 for each end and
- 1 for the loop in the middle of the tarp
I use trail sticks to attach the tarp loops to the Prussics. Easy to attach and I do not have to be concerned about losing a trail stick.
I also use trail sticks to attach the guy lines to the tarp loops.
I use 3 trail sticks and 3 Prussics to make a truckers hitch type arrangement for putting up the tarp and 1 trail stick on the other end of the ridge line (fixed eye spliced in the end, wrap tree, pull bight through eye and secure with trail stick.
I use a lot of trail sticks to hang my tarp, a JRB cat cut tarp. A total of 13:
- 1 on first end of ridge line,
- 3 on second end of ridge line to form truckers hitch arrangement,
- 3 on tarp ridge line, one in middle and one on each end,
- 3 per side for guy line pull outs.
I use 1.75 mm Lash-It for the ridge line and all Prussics. Never had a problem.
I have never run out of trial sticks yet and have never worried about walking off and forgetting one and losing it. Lost too much hardware on the trail because I forgot it or dropped it.

I use a piece of cabling pull-string(load rating:200lbs, weight:35 ft/oz and no stretch when wet) with loops tied every foot or so with stout plastic S-hooks tied on to the center tie outs on my tarp with S-biners at each end. My tarp is 10'x12' and my ridge line is about 25' long. Any trees close enough for my hammock are close enough for my ridge line. Whatever diameter trees I use, I'm never far from a loop for the S-biners on the ends and the 1 foot spacing allows me to hook the tarps S-hooks taughtly at 10' or 12'. It's light and very fast to deploy.
I like to hang the ridgeline seperately from the tarp. this allows me to get the ridgeline nice and taut before attaching the tarp. Then use the s-biners to clip to the prussik loops on the CRL. The tarp goes up NICE AND FAST.
My s-biners are attached to prussiks so that the position of the tarp can be adjusted up and down the ridgeline over the hammock.

Tarp line is amsteel 7/64 which I have a fixed eye on one end that I toggle lock and the other end I just wrap around to a 9 on a prusik.
Easy peasy.
S-biners on prussiks for me...they are so quick to adjust and haven't slipped on me yet!

with Dutch flyz you save so much weight ... no need for a Con RL
Dutch hooks to attach the tarp, and a Dutch hook on one end of the ridge line coupled with a Dutch flyz to tension it.
I use a CRL with a microbiner hitched to one end and a trail stick toggle held in place with a cow hitch using loops to tighten the other end (as with the marlin spike hitch, use the knot, not the toggle, to bear the load). I finish off with a double slippery half-hitch on that end.
To attach the tarp to the CRL (which never comes off unless I need to do some maintenance on it), I use the prusik loops with clips that came with my Hennessy. I've detached them from the Hennessy's suspension and retied them as klemheists to the CRL.
A Prussic on both ends of the ridgeline attaches to the tarp with a quick release knot til my dutch hooks turn up. RidgeLine is attched to trees by an Alu hook at one end and figure 9 at the other-again, til my Flyz turn up.
I find it much easier keeping it all together, makes setting up a breeze.
I like to have the tarp hung but pushed all the way to one tree for rapid deployment in our lovely unpredictable waether.
A couple of weeks back I posted this... since then I've switched out the knotbone for a Dutch hook (Thanks Dutch!). I really like the hook and can't believe how tiny the thing is. I got a chance to try it out in the backyard this weekend and it works great. I use 2.2 mm Lash-It! for my ridgeline, so I was a little worried that the hook might not work with the larger diameter cord. It worked great and is a little faster than using the knotbone.Quote:

Didn't seem to affect the strength of the thing but the whole thing was def twisted around. I'm guessing it was the result of some fairly strong winds we got on our last trip to Mt Rogers. I'll post pics of the knotbone when I get home.
I've attached pics of the knotbone. This was my first DIY splicing project and I think that might have played a role as I didn't tighten the eye around the knotbone.
